Year 4

Home Learning Friday 22nd January 2021

Good morning Year 4.  Well done for all your Home Learning this week.  You have worked hard and put in a lot of effort.  I’m sure you’re looking forward to relaxing over the weekend and enjoying some time with your family.

Look out for the ‘Friday catch up’ which will be sent via Seesaw later on this afternoon.

Please complete today’s work as if you were in school, taking care with your handwriting, spellings, punctuation, vocabulary, and of course, your presentation. Remember to try and do the work on the day it is set as it usually follows on from the previous day.  It is important that you continue to work hard recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things.

If you need any reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Find ten common nouns (general words for people, places and things) and five proper nouns (specific names for people, places or things – they always have capital letters). Write the words you have found in your Home Learning book.

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Thursday 28th January 2021.  They all have the prefix inter.  A PREFIX is a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the START. Inter means amongst or during.

Copy the new words into your book carefully and make sure you find out the meanings of any words you don’t know.  Please practise these words in your books, they are NOT on Sumdog this week.

English

Yesterday we started our novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.

Today, as you read / listen to Kensuke’s Kingdom, write down the names of all the characters you meet.

If you want to read Chapter 1 to yourself, please download the copy of Kensuke’s Kingdom attached to the blog.  ONLY READ Chapter 1 please.

If you want to read Chapter 1 and listen to it being read, please click on the links below (at the end of Part 1 it should automatically go to Part 2 – the link is here incase it doesn’t).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcEa-beSa0o&safe=active     (Chapter 1 Part 1)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR1ii4BPJN4&safe=active    (Chapter 1 Part 2)

  1. Download the sheet ‘Chapter 1 Definitions’ attached to this blog.  Instructions are given on the sheet – either print the sheet off, complete it and stick it in your book, or copy the words into your book and write the meaning and a sentence below the word.

Write the long date Friday 22nd January 2021

Write the learning objective Can I find definitions for words and use them correctly?

  1. You should have a list of names you heard whilst you were reading / listening to the story. Choose 4 of those names and write everything you have learnt about that character so far in the story.  (You should try and include some main characters, such as Mum, Dad, Michael and Stella Artois, as well as some minor characters, such as Barnacle Bill, Eddie Dodds etc)

Write the long date Friday 22nd January 2021

Write the learning objective Can I explain what I have learnt about a character using evidence from the text?

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

If you did your test yesterday and sent it to me on Seesaw, I may have given you a new target.  Please start to practise your new target today.

If you didn’t do your test yesterday, please do it today and send it to me on Seesaw so that I can see how you are getting on learning your tables.

If you have a new target, please practise that on Hit the button.

Counting

Count in 100’s from 800 to 2100 and back again.  Count in 100’s from 550 to 1750 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?

Please count in 11’s from 11 to 132 and back again – can you go any further? (if you get stuck, add 10 then 1 onto your last number if counting up or subtract 10 then 1 if counting down). Writ the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Eg 11 22    22 add 10 = 32 + 1 = 33     etc

Maths

Use the link below – to play Daily 10.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Click on play game. Choose level 2, subtraction, 2 digit numbers.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.  You will need to write the answers down and check them at the end.

Choose level 2, subtraction, 2 digit numbers with composition, choose a time interval and play again.

Please open the maths worksheet called ‘Multiply 3 numbers’ attached to the blog.  You may print this off if you have a printer.

EITHER click on the link below and watch the lesson, Multiply 3 numbers

Write the learning objective Can I multiply 3 numbers accurately?

Complete the worksheet as instructed (if you have printed it off) and stick it in your book or write the answers directly into your Home Learning Book.

Check your answers from yesterday, they are in the document ‘Answers 11 and 12 times tables’ which is attached to the blog.  Make sure you look carefully at any questions you got wrong.

Last week, we revisited and learnt more about measurement – length and perimeter.  To consolidate this learning, I have set a challenge on Sumdog.  Please log on and have a go.

Science

Yesterday, you may have set up a freezing activity.

If you set this experiment up, please take your frozen liquids out and leave them until they start to melt.

Download the lesson using this link and goto slide 5

https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=54CF08BDFC25132B!24310&ithint=file%2cpptx&authkey=!AJO_FWydZh6aBrk

Look at the table on slide 5 and copy it into your Home Learning Book under the date and learning objective.

Date - Friday 22nd January 2021

Learning objective - Can I make observations of frozen liquids?

Record the observations of your frozen liquids beginning to melt in your table, adding as much detail as you can.  There is a good example on slide 9.

Well done – you are becoming experts on changing states of matter

RE - Community

Jesus proclaimed God the Father’s love by what he said and did. People who followed Jesus Christ in the early Church began to be called Christians. They formed a Christian community called the Church. At the beginning of his ministry on earth, Jesus chose certain people to follow him and share in his work. They were to be apostles and would be sent out to spread the Good News. God chooses people to serve him today through their parish communities.  Read Mark 3: 13-19 below.

Questions to think about

How do you think the apostles felt when Jesus chose them to help him in his work?

Why do you think he chose people to help him?

What do you think the Good News is?

Write the long date Friday 22nd January 2021

Learning objective Can I describe how James / Andrew etc felt to be chosen as an apostle?

(Write the name of your chosen apostle where I have written James / Andrew etc).

Draw one of the apostles in your book.  Draw a speech bubble and write the words you think they would say to Jesus immediately after he chose them to help him in his work. You MUST write a minimum of 8 words!

Please upload your RE to Seesaw

Art

Last week, you had a go at designing your own mosaic border using 5 rows of squares and either 2 or 3 colours.  This week, I would like you to design another border, using a different pattern / different colours.

Please download the document called ‘Mosaics’ attached to the blog – this gives some examples on pg 3.

Attached to the blog is some squared paper for you to use (Mosaic squared paper).

REMEMBER ONLY USE 2 OR 3 COLOURS AND REPEAT THE PATTERN

Please share your work on Seesaw so that I can see your creative designs.

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 4 and 8 times tables)
  • A maths challenge ‘Measure the perimeter of 2D shapes’
  • A grammar challenge ‘Inverted commas / speech marks’ to consolidate last week’s learning

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

New challenges will start on Monday 25th January 2021

Well done for finishing today’s work.  Have a lovely weekend and stay safe.
