Year 4
Home Learning Thursday 21st January 2021
Good morning Year 4. I hope you are all happy and well. Make sure you say a big thank you to everyone at home who has helped you in any way. They may have helped with your Home Learning, made you something to eat or drink, or given you a hug and a big smile. Thank you also from the Year 4 team for all your help and support at this tricky time.
Please complete today’s work as if you were in school, taking care with your handwriting, spellings, punctuation, vocabulary, and of course, your presentation. Remember to try and do the work on the day it is set as it usually follows on from the previous day. It is important that you continue to work hard recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things.
If you need any reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.
Reading
Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes. Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.
Tell someone about your favourite character in the book. What is their name and what does it suggest about them? What is it about the character that you like? Can you describe their appearance (what they look like) and their personality (what they are like)?
Spelling
This week’s spellings all have the prefix ‘super’. Children in school will be tested on these words today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on them. Write the date in your book - Thursday 21st January 2021 and the title Spelling test and complete the test underneath. Once you’ve completed the test, check any words that you got wrong. Good luck! The words are:
superstar supermarket supernova supermodel
superpower superhero supernatural superglue
supersonic superintendent supersaturated superstore
New spellings will be given tomorrow.
English
Today we will be starting a class novel – Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. This is one of my favourite books and our English learning will be based on it.
Please open the document attached to the blog called ‘Front cover and blurb’.
Write the long date Thursday 21st January 2021
Write the learning objective Can I make predictions and ask questions about a text?
Look at the front cover carefully (slide 1). In your book:
- Write a list of what can you see in the picture.
- Explain where you think this is and why.
- List who and what you see in the boat.
- Is the sea calm or do you think the boat is in danger? Explain why you think this.
Read the blurb on the back carefully (slide 2). Answer these questions in your book.
- Who do you think Michael is and how old is he?
- How did Michael get washed up on an island?
- Why do you think Michael was on a boat in the first place?
- How do you know Michael is not alone on the island and is this ‘person’ a friend or an enemy? Why do you think this?
- What genre of book do you think this is? (this means what category / kind of
story do you think it is, for example science fiction, fairy tale, adventure story, fantasy, horror, mystery, thriller etc)
- Explain why you think the book belongs to this genre.
Now read the first 2 paragraphs of Chapter 1 on the third and fourth slide (you will be sent a recording of these 2 paragraphs through Seesaw on Thursday morning, so you can listen to and read the text at the same time).
In your book, write 6 questions that you would like to ask now you have read these first 2 paragraphs. For example:
How did Michael disappear?
How did he come back from the dead?
Why has he had to keep this secret for 10 years?
Please remember to write your answers in full sentences, in your best joined up hand writing, using questions marks and capital letters in the correct places.
Please share your work on Seesaw
Times tables
Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or ÷8 if you are on ‘free’ tables. Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed up order. This is how I do it in school - ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.
Write the short date 21.01.21
Write the title Times table test
Check your answers carefully.
Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.
Counting
Count in 100’s from 100 to 1500 and back again. Count in 100’s from 180 to 1280 and back again. Think about what you found tricky.
Please count in 11’s from 11 to 132 and back again – can you go any further? (if you get stuck, add 10 then 1 onto your last number if counting up or subtract 10 then 1 if counting down). Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?
Eg 11 22 22 add 10 = 32 + 1 = 33 etc
Maths
Use the link below – to play Daily 10.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
Repeat the addition games you played yesterday but choose a shorter time between the questions. For example, if you chose 10 seconds between each question yesterday, choose 7 seconds today etc.
Click on play game. Choose level 2, addition, 2 digit numbers. Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc. You will need to write the answers down and check them at the end.
Choose level 3, addition, 2 digit numbers and play again.
Please open the maths worksheet called ’11 and 12 times table’ attached to the blog. You may print this off if you have a printer.
EITHER click on the link below and watch the lesson, 11 and 12 times tables
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/week-1-number-multiplication-division/
OR click on the link below for the video.
Write the short date 21.01.21
Write the learning objective Can I calculate using the 11 and 12 times tables?
Complete the worksheet as instructed (if you have printed it off) and stick it in your book or write the answers directly into your Home Learning Book.
Check your answers from yesterday, they are in the document ‘Answers Divide by 1 and itself’ which is attached to the blog. Make sure you look carefully at any questions you got wrong.
Last week, we revisited and learnt more about measurement – length and perimeter. To consolidate this learning, I have set a challenge on Sumdog. Please log on and have a go.
Science
Click this link for today’s lesson investigating freezing and melting. https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=54CF08BDFC25132B!24310&ithint=file%2cpptx&authkey=!AJO_FWydZh6aBrk
In school, we will be setting up the freezing activity on slide 5 and then coming back to this tomorrow once the liquids have frozen. Then, we will watch the chocolate making video and investigate how chocolate melts as described in the second video clip on slide 9. You will need some dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate for this activity. If you are able to do this investigation, please plan and record your experiment on the sheet attached to the blog called ‘Science Investigation Sheet’.
Write the long date Thursday 21st January 2021
Write the learning objective for the chocolate experiment, which is Can I plan and carry out an investigation about melting?
If you don’t have chocolate, you could try the ice investigation on slide 6. Record your work under these headings:
What I used
What I did
Which ice cube melted fastest and why
How I could improve my investigation
The next day, take your frozen liquids out and leave them until they start to melt. Record your observations in a table like the one on slide 5. Add as much detail as you can. You can have a look at a good example on slide 9.
The learning objective for the frozen liquids experiment is Can I make observations of frozen liquids?
Well done – you are becoming experts on changing states of matter
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 4 and 8 times tables)
- A maths challenge ‘Measure the perimeter of 2D shapes’
- A grammar challenge ‘Inverted commas / speech marks’ to consolidate last week’s learning
Please make sure you log on and have a go!
Well done for finishing today’s work. Have a lovely evening and stay safe.
