Home Learning Thursday 4th February 2021
Good morning Year 4. Welcome to Thursday’s Home Learning. I hope you are keeping up with your Well-being journal and trying to focus on the positive things. Why not try a breathing technique if you find things a bit tricky?
Don’t forget to have a go at the challenges on Sumdog. Six of you have already completed the spelling challenge and five people have completed the tables challenge – brilliant! Twenty-four of you have started the subtraction challenge and four people have completed it – well done!
Reading
Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes. Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.
Try and use lots of expression in your reading today. Use different voices for the characters and think about how they would speak.
Spelling
These are your spellings which will be tested on Monday 8th February 2021. They are all homophones. Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelt differently.
tide tied knight night break brake fought fort
waist waste guest guessed feet feat
Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021
Practise each of the words using look, cover, write, check. Do this 3 times for each word.
English
Today, please read the beginning of Chapter 5 up to page 73 where it says ‘….completely mad.’ PLEASE DO NOT READ ON ANY FURTHER.
A copy of the book is attached to the blog and an audio recording will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning.
Make sure you look up any words if you are unsure about their meaning.
Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021
Write the learning objective Can I explain different points of view?
- In full sentences, explain what Michael is trying to do (why he is making a fire) and how he is feeling about what has happened and towards the stranger.
- Now focus on Kensuke. In full sentences, explain why Kensuke is angry and why he has put out the fire.
Write the learning objective Can I write a diary account?
Please write a diary account, in the first person, from Kensuke’s point of view of the fire incident. Consider how Kensuke might have first noticed the fire, how he feels about Michael and Stella, why he is so angry and puts out the fire, and what he thinks or hopes will happen next.
Focus on:
- Capital letters and punctuation
- Perfect spelling
- Beautiful handwriting
- Including thoughts and feelings
- Using the first person (eg using I as you are writing as Kensuke)
- Past tense (the incident has already happened)
- Using a variety of sentence openers
- Writing at least 3 sentences starting with a ‘subordinating conjunction’.
For example you could choose 3 of the following as sentence openers: because, after, while, when, although, before, as, if, even though, despite, since
Once you have written your diary account, please read through your work carefully and check your spellings and capital letters. Also ensure that your writing makes sense and you have not missed out any words.
Please share your work on Seesaw.
Times tables
A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 3, 6 and 9 times tables.
Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or ÷11 if you are on ‘free’ tables. Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed up order. This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.
Write the short date 04.02.21
Write the title Times tables test
Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.
Counting
Count in 25’s from 1000 to 1275 and back again. Count in 25’s from 1925 to 2175 and back again. Think about what you found tricky? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice? Repeat this a couple of times. How many 25’s are there in 100?
Please count in 9’s from 0 to 108 and back again – can you go any further? (If you get stuck, add 10 then subtract 1 from your last number if counting up, or subtract 10 then add 1 back on if counting down). Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?
Eg 9 18 27 27 + 10 = 37 – 1 = 36 45 etc
Maths
Click here to play Daily 10.
Click on play game. Choose level 3, Doubles/halves, Upto 500. Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc. Try and calculate more quickly than you did yesterday.
Remember make jottings to help yourself
Eg double 128 Partition into 100 20 8
Double 100 = 200 Double 20 = 40 Double 8 = 16
200 + 40 + 16 = 256
Repeat this game a couple of times and see if you can calculate more quickly and accurately each time.
For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about multiplication. We have:
- multiplied multiples of ten by a single digit (eg 30 x 8)
- multiplied 2 digit numbers by a single digit (eg 42 x 6)
- multiplied 3 numbers together (eg 6 x 5 x 2)
- doubled one factor and halved the other to help with multiplication
(eg 6 x 14, change to 12 x 7)
- found factors and factor pairs
Today we are going to consolidate 2 of these strategies.
- First, we are going to consolidate multiplying 3 numbers together. Please watch the video which will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning which will explain this strategy. Following this, please complete the questions on page 1 of the document ‘Maths questions’. Please show your working out and use the most efficient method – this means multiply the numbers together in the order it is easiest to calculate!
- Then, watch the video explaining doubling one factor and halving the other which will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning. You can then complete the questions on the second page of the document ‘Maths questions’.
When you have completed both sets of questions, please check your answers carefully – they are attached to the blog in the document ‘Maths answers’. Please also write a comment on the bottom of your work to explain what you find most tricky – is it your knowledge of times tables? Knowing which number to double and which to halve? Etc
Science
Click this link to download today’s lesson on the Water Cycle. The BBC clips and activities are very good at explaining how it works.
Year 4a Lesson 5 the water cycle.pptx - Microsoft PowerPoint Online (live.com)
Have a go at making one of the water cycle models. Then try the writing activity on slide 7. You will find slide 5 helpful for your writing.
Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021
Write the learning objective Can I make and evaluate a model of the water cycle?
Draw a picture of your model and say how well it represents the stages of the water cycle. Can you see evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection taking place? (Collection is the rivers, lakes and the sea that collect and store the water before it evaporates again.) Use the vocabulary on slide 7 to help you. Please reread your writing to check it makes sense and is correctly spelt and punctuated.
If you’d like to colour a picture of the water cycle, please print the ‘Science - Water cycle’ document attached to the blog - you can then colour and label this picture.
Well done Year 4. You are becoming experts on how solids, liquids and gases can change state.
Mental Health Week
As this week is Children’s Mental Health Week, we are thinking each day about our feelings, emotions and moods.
Today, please:
- Complete the Well-being journal attached to the blog
- Have a go at the ‘Rainbow resting’ activity on the second page of the journal
- Create your own kitchen band – please MAKE SURE you check with an adult at home before you do this!
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 3, 6 and 9 times tables)
- A maths challenge to practise subtracting 1’s, 10’s and 100’s from numbers within 1000 (a lot of you find this tricky)
- A spelling challenge based on this week’s homophone spellings
Please make sure you log on and have a go!
New challenges will start on Monday 8th February 2021
Well done for finishing today’s work. Have a lovely evening and stay safe.
