Year 4

Home Practice 14th May 2021

A busy week in Year 4! Well done for working hard.

We refined our compact method of addition and recapped and revised our 6, 9 and 7 times tables.  In English, we wrote our own Haiku’s and a character description of Grace, both of these were based on our class novel.  We completed our Science topic ‘Teeth and digestion’ by looking at and learning more about food chains.  We finished our Powerpoint quizzes about Italy and made sure that we included transitions, animations, and at least one hyperlink – we are so proud of what we achieved!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (19th May 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

Some of you have asked if you can practise your times tables on the ‘Multiplication check’ program we used this week.  Unfortunately, you cannot use exactly the same program at home.  You can however play something very similar by clicking on the link below.  You will be given 6 seconds to answer the question and there will be a gap of 3 seconds between each question.

Spellings

The spellings this week all have the suffix ‘sion’.  A suffix is a group of letters that are added to the end of the word, and which change the meaning or make a new word.  ‘Sion’ is usually used if the root word ends in ‘d’ (eg extend, extension) or ‘se’ (adverse, adversion).  These words will be tested on Thursday (20th May 2021).  We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’.  The spellings are on Sumdog this week.

expansion     extension     tension        suspension   exclusion

explosion      collision        erosion        invasion        television

illusion         confusion     inclusion       intrusion      division

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A multiplication tables check, similar to the check you completed in school this week
  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 9 and 7 times table)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!
