Home Practice 21st May 2021
Keep up the good work Year 4!
In maths this week, we have revisited mental strategies for subtraction and learnt the compact written method. In English we wrote an informal letter to our friend Poleng and practised using inverted commas (speech marks). Some children gave a lovely class worship to finish our RE topic about Pentecost and New Life. This was based on the life of St Paul. In PE, we showed off our cricket skills by taking part in a mini tournament. Our new Science topic is Sound. In order to investigate what makes sound, we carried out different activities – why not ask us what we did to see what we remember! In our French lesson, we drew an abstract face, Picasso style, then described it in French. We did very well!
Reading
Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home. Make sure you discuss the story and the characters. Find the meaning of any new words too. Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.
Times tables
You have been given your own individual times table target. Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (26th May 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?
You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’. Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise. This is an excellent way to practise your tables. Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:
Some of you have asked if you can practise your times tables on the ‘Multiplication check’ program we used this week. Unfortunately, you cannot use exactly the same program at home. You can however play something very similar by clicking on the link below. You will be given 6 seconds to answer the question and there will be a gap of 3 seconds between each question.
Spellings
The spellings this week all have the suffix ‘tion’. A suffix is a group of letters that are added to the end of the word, and which change the meaning or make a new word. ‘Tion’ is usually used if the root word ends in ‘t’ (eg invent, invention) or ‘te’ (create, creation). These words will be tested on Thursday (27th May 2021). We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’. The spellings are on Sumdog this week.
