Firfield Primary School - Year 6

Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog.

This week in Year 6

English

Exhibition celebrates the Englishman who created modern circus | Exhibitions | The Guardian

In English we have been revising word classes, and in particular how to use determiners in a sentence. We also researched all about the history of the circus, so that we could write our own reports.

Maths

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages...

This week, we have continued our learning on ratio; we have learned how to share in a given ratio and use our ratio knowledge to solve problems. We have also revised how to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages and how to find fractions of amounts.

RE

Stations of the Cross - Church of St. Gluvias

In RE, we have been reflecting on the stations of the cross. We prayed the stations of the cross together and reflected on one of the stations that spoke to us. We created some beautiful artwork and poetry to express our thoughts and feelings.

Topic

In Art, we continued our portrait topic by creating layered portraits inspired by Mike Barrett. We had to layer pencil, biro and watercolour to create a self portrait.

For Science we planned our own electricity investigation. We had to think carefully how to make a fair test and we are looking forward to completing our investigations next week!

We have also learned all about Fair Trade this week by playing the 'banana split' game from CAFOD.

Homework - Kristina Stevenson's Classroom - SSD Public Website at Salem School District

Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday

Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.

Books may be changed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Spelling -

Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.

We will have our test on the 28/03/25

It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but you could also ask someone to call the words out and spell them out loud. Other ideas include, breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (accommodate). You could look for words within words (accompany) or think of your own ways to remember the word, for example, spell it aloud using a mnemonic or tune.
