Year 5 Blog Friday 9th December 2022
Date: 7th Dec 2022 @ 9:47am
Happy Friday and welcome to your Friday Blog.
Here is a summary of our learning from the week:
In maths we have been looking at angles. We have been measuring and drawing angles using a protractor. We have also been naming angles. We then moved on to measuring lengths accurately in cm and mm and then using the measurements to find the perimeter of shapes.
Here is a really great website to practise drawing and measuring angles. We have had a go in class too.

In English we have been working on a persuasive piece of writing to persuade people to go and stay at the Crow's Nest Hotel. We decided who we wanted to try to persuade and then looked at different types of sentences and words we could use to persuade our target audience.
In RE we have started our new topic. It is called Advent/ Christmas - Loving.
So far we have learned about the Advent Wreath and what each candle represents. We have also thought about what it was like for people waiting in hope for the coming of the Messiah. We read some scripture which was of the different things the prophets told people to give them hope and to help them live in the way God wanted whilst they were waiting for the coming of Jesus. We then thought of ways we could give people hope if they were finding things difficult and needed encouragement.
We have finished our DT topic by evaluating our Greek snack. We thought about how our snack met its purpose, how authentic it was and how we would improve or change it if we made it again.
We had our final swimming lesson on Wednesday. Steve was very impressed with the progress we have all made so he treated us to a fun week. We played some games and listened to Christmas music. We also got our certificates for the Advanced Water Satefy Award, Water Safety Award, and 10 or 25 metres.
In French, we drafted our own version of the Saving of Christmas story, using bilingual dictionaries to look up any nouns we needed. We managed really well to change the definite article (le,la or les) to an indefinite article (un, une or des). Tres bien, Y5! They'll look great as soon as they're finished!
Home Practice
Reading
Read out loud to somebody every night for 20 minutes. Talk about what you have read and discuss the meaning of new words.
Counting
Count out loud in:
7s from 0 to 84 and back again. 7 14 21 ...
5s from 0 to 60 and back again. 5 10 15 ...
30s from 0 to 360 and back again. 30 60 90 ...
Times Tables
Please practise the division facts for the times table you are on:
2 x 3 = 6 so 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 6 ÷ 3 = 2
