Year 4

Home Practice 5th November 2021

Welcome back to another busy half term and the run up to Christmas! Year 4 have had a fabulous week of learning and now need to get back into the swing of completing their weekly Home Practice.

Here’s what we have been learning in school this week ….

In English, we wrote a letter from Lila (the main character in the book) to her father explaining her feelings about wanting to be a firework maker. We tried our best to include paragraphs and a rhetorical question.  In addition, we listened to the class novel, discussed new vocabulary and summarised the story.  During the grammar part of the lesson, we practised using co-ordinating conjunctions to extend sentences. We can now use a variety of these in our writing.

In Maths we used numberlines to help subtract numbers. Bridging 10 and 100 was involved and although many of us found this tricky, we have all made good progress. We also learnt more about tenths, especially pairs to 10 where decimal tenths are involved (eg 6.4 + 3.6 = 10).

In RE we explored how we are all unique and different. We understand that we should treat each other as we would like to be treated and wrote our own set of Golden Rules.

We also started our Roman’s topic in History. Initially, we discussed what we already knew, what we would like to know, where the Romans originated from and what the Roman Empire was.

In French we learnt about subject pronouns (I,  you, he. she. we, you, they) and the verb etre (to be) in the context of Remembrance Day. Next week, we will use this grammar to write about this special time.

In PE we started a dance unit called ‘Sparks Might Fly’ which complements our new science topic, Electricity. In addition, we learnt some new tag rugby skills.

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (11th November 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 6’s and 0.2’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 6’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 72 and back again

0   6   12    18  etc                     72   66    60   etc

Start at 36 and count up to 90 and down again

36    42     48   etc                   90    84     78    etc

Count in 0.2’s

Start at 0 and count up to 1.6 and back again

0.2    0.4    0.6   etc           1.6   1.4   1.2  etc

Start at 5.4 and count up to 7.0 and back again

5.4   5.6   5.8   etc             7.0   6.8   6.6    etc

Spellings

The spellings this week explore words ending with the ‘g’ sound spelt ‘-gue’. Please practise your spellings each evening at home.  You will be tested on them next Thursday (11th November 2021). We have discussed in class different strategies you could use to help you learn them and you could always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

Year 4 HOME PRACTICE Friday 15th October 2021

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 1:13pm

Year 4

Home Practice 15th October 2021

An amazing week in Year 4 – lots of learning and lots of creativity! Well done to everyone who has been on Sumdog during the last week to practise their tables and spellings.  The more you practise, the more confident you will become.

In English, we started our new novel ‘The Firework-Makers Daughter’. We predicted the setting and what we thought would happen in the story by looking at the pictures on the front cover and reading the blurb carefully. In Maths, we have been counting in tenths and multiples of 4. We also used numberlines to help add and subtract 3 digit numbers which were multiples of 10 and consolidated our learning about sequences. In History, we finished our Celtic Roundhouse models and made a small hill fort near the stage. We are extremely proud of our models – please look at our pictures below! We now know days, numbers and months of the year, so we can write the date in French.  We have been practising these skills in our weekly French lessons. In PE, we used all our netball skills in a mini tournament – well done Year 4.

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (21st October 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 4’s and 0.1’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class.  You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you’ve got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 4’s

For example, start at 0 and count to 48 and back again

0   4   8   12  etc                     48   44   40   etc

Start at 20 and count up to 68 and down again

9.7   9.8   9.9     etc                11.2   11.1   11.0       etc

Spellings

The spellings this week explore words which have the ‘i’ sound spelt y elsewhere than at the end of words. For example, the word ‘myth’ sounds like it should be spelt ‘mith’; the word ‘gym’ sounds as if it should be spelt ‘gim’. In each case, the ‘i’ sound is spelt with a ‘y’. Please practise your spellings each evening at home.  You will be tested on them next Thursday (21st October 2021).  We have discussed in class different strategies you could use to help you learn them and you could always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

Home Practice 8th October 2021

You have worked hard this week Year 4 and shown a brilliant attitude to your learning! Well done to everyone who has been on Sumdog during the last week to practise their tables and spellings.  The more you practise, the more confident you will become.

In English, we finished reading ‘How the Whale Became and Other Stories’.  We then wrote our own story in the same style and edited it with a partner. At present, we are trying to build up our stamina, and improve our sentence openers and vocabulary when we are writing.   In maths we have continued rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 – many of us found this tricky but we persevered, and all made great progress.  We also learnt mental strategies for adding and subtracting 1, 10, 100 and 1000. In History, we sketched and labelled a roundhouse and then started to make our own roundhouse out of clay and lolly sticks.  In PE we continued practising our bounce and chest passes and enjoyed playing mini games of netball.  In Science, we discovered how to classify different animals. We learnt that there are lots of different ways to group animals.

Date: 9th Jul 2021 @ 3:57pm

Year 4

Home Practice 9th July 2021

Another super week in Year 4!  We made ‘stop motion’ videos in computing.  First, we practised making a video and worked out how to make it more successful – making sure we kept the ipad still and our fingers were out of the way before we took the picture! We then made our final films and are extremely proud of what we have achieved. We also finished our World Ocean Day pictures using felt tips, plastic wallets and cut out shapes.  Our finished artwork looks very effective and shows what the ocean should look like without pollution!   In Maths, we continued to investigate equivalent fractions using fractions walls, ‘pizza’ pieces and Cuisenaire.  In addition, we refined our mental and written division strategies.  In Science, we used a sound box to compare different materials and how effectively they muffled sound. We also managed to squeeze in our Year 4 sports day on Wednesday afternoon – make sure you check out the video on the website!

Keep up the good work Year 4!

Year 4

Home Practice 2nd July 2021

Another fabulous week in Year 4!  We have painted and ‘glossed’ our clay sculptures - they look absolutely brilliant.  In History, we completed a passport as if we were an Angle, Jute or Saxon and had arrived from either Denmark or Germany.  We chose a name and occupation and described why we had come to England.  In English, we continued reading Bill’s New Frock.  We acted out part of a chapter, looked at the features of a playscript and then wrote our own script.  In Maths, we investigated equivalent fractions creating our own fraction wall out of strips of paper.  We also enjoyed watching Year 3’s sports day and experimenting with our ‘string telephones’ in Science.

Keep up the good work Year 4!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

HOME PRACTICE Year 4 25th June 2021

Date: 25th Jun 2021 @ 4:29pm

Year 4

Home Practice 25th June 2021

Another busy week in Year 4!  The whole school took part in World Music Day outside - it was great fun and we all played a musical instrument as we sang ‘Celebrate’. In addition, as a cross curricular activity, we made our own musical instruments.  We planned and designed our instruments, played them and then evaluated them to consider what we were most proud of and what we would change if we were to make them again.  This developed our design and technology learning as well as our Science learning about ‘sound’. On Wednesday, we had a ‘Mindfulness’ session during which we learnt some techniques for relaxing and breathing when we are feeling anxious, happy, excited or even angry. We also had a Zoom chat with an audiologist on Friday morning which was very interesting and helped us understand more about ‘sound’ and how we hear!

Please bring in a ‘string telephone’ next Thursday for our Science lesson.  You were given an instruction sheet on Friday 25th June 2021.

Keep up the good work Year 4!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Year 4

Home Practice 18th June 2021

Well done for working so hard this week Year 4!  In Maths, we revised mental strategies and formal written methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication!  In English, we used dictionaries to find out the meaning of new words and then used them in sentences to show our understanding.  We also used evidence from the text to sketch and label a picture of the playground and who was doing what in it! To extend our knowledge of Europe, we have been keeping a wall chart of results from the Euro 2020 matches and located the 11 host cities on a map.  On Thursday afternoon we learnt about modelling with clay and made some amazing sea sculptures – please have a look in our gallery!

Remember to bring something in to make your musical instrument on Monday – please DO NOT make it at home as we will be doing this in school.

Keep up the good work Year 4 and thank you for a lovely week!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (23rd June 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

Hit the Button

Spellings

The spellings this week all have the prefix ‘il’ or ‘im’.  A prefix is a group of letters that are added to the beginning of a word, and change the meaning or make a new word.  ‘Il’ and ‘im’ both mean not.  Therefore, when they are added to the beginning of a word, they form words with the opposite meaning.  For example illegal means not legal and impatient means not patient.  The spellings are on Sumdog this week.

illegal           illegible                 illiterate      illogical        illegally

improper      imperfect              improbable   impatient     immature

immobile      immortal                impractical   impossible    implausible

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A maths challenge finding fractions of amounts (unit and non-unit)
  • A maths times table challenge (based on all the times tables)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

Home Practice 11th June 2021

A fantastic week back after half term – and hasn’t the weather been wonderful too!  In Maths, we learnt more about fractions. We found fractions of amounts and started to find out more about equivalent fractions using different manipulatives, such as paper plates! In English, we started our new novel, Bill’s New Frock. We made predictions about the story and then wrote a diary account as if we were Bill. We enjoyed going on a nature trail to the pond and spotting the wildlife down there – we even saw a frog and some damsel flies.  We started our new History topic, Anglo-Saxons and found out more about where these invaders came from and why they settled in Britain.

Keep up the good work Year 4!

Internet Safety

Keeping our children safe in the online space is of ever growing importance. From phones to consoles, our children are exposed to more online risk than ever and it is important that we adults keep up to date to ensure our children are prepared for all they meet online. Here is an interesting article on Internet Security professionals teach their children about internet safety.

How do I keep my children safe online? What the security experts tell their kids

Below we have attached two guides on how to set up your child's phone for privacy. We teach the children not to share their information when online, however social platforms and games will take data from users unknowingly.

Keep up the good work Year 4!

In maths this week, we have revisited mental strategies for subtraction and learnt the compact written method.  In English we wrote an informal letter to our friend Poleng and practised using inverted commas (speech marks).  Some children gave a lovely class worship to finish our RE topic about Pentecost and New Life. This was based on the life of St Paul.  In PE, we showed off our cricket skills by taking part in a mini tournament. Our new Science topic is Sound.  In order to investigate what makes sound, we carried out different activities – why not ask us what we did to see what we remember! In our French lesson, we drew an abstract face, Picasso style, then described it in French. We did very well!

A busy week in Year 4! Well done for working hard.

We refined our compact method of addition and recapped and revised our 6, 9 and 7 times tables.  In English, we wrote our own Haiku’s and a character description of Grace, both of these were based on our class novel.  We completed our Science topic ‘Teeth and digestion’ by looking at and learning more about food chains.  We finished our Powerpoint quizzes about Italy and made sure that we included transitions, animations, and at least one hyperlink – we are so proud of what we achieved!

5 little-known social media mark... - News - What Mobile

Using social media websites is among the most common activity of today's children and adolescents. Any website that allows social interaction is considered a social media site, including social networking sites such as Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat and Twitter; gaming sites and virtual worlds such as Club Penguin, Second Life, and the Sims; video sites such as YouTube; and blogs. Such sites offer today's youth a portal for entertainment and communication and have grown exponentially in recent years. For this reason, it is important that parents become aware of the nature of social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for children and adolescents. - From the American Academy of Pediatrics

Below you will find two guides. One for Snapchat and one for Sadfishing.
