5 little-known social media mark... - News - What Mobile

Using social media websites is among the most common activity of today's children and adolescents. Any website that allows social interaction is considered a social media site, including social networking sites such as Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat and Twitter; gaming sites and virtual worlds such as Club Penguin, Second Life, and the Sims; video sites such as YouTube; and blogs. Such sites offer today's youth a portal for entertainment and communication and have grown exponentially in recent years. For this reason, it is important that parents become aware of the nature of social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for children and adolescents. - From the American Academy of Pediatrics

Well done everyone for working so hard since we all came back to school on 8th March,

We have had a great week in Year 4, learning more about Holy Week and how we can be more like Jesus, as well as creating bright and colourful Easter cards for our families.

Have a wonderful Easter and relaxing half term! Enjoy the break and spending time with your families.

HOME PRACTICE Friday 26th March 2021

Date: 26th Mar 2021 @ 3:48pm

Year 4

Home Practice 26th March 2021

Doesn’t time go fast – I can’t believe we’ve been back in school for 3 full weeks already, and there’s only one week to go before we break up for Easter!

We now have an Online Safety Blog on our website.  This is updated each Wednesday.  Please have a look at the blog as different guides will be uploaded weekly.  This week’s guides relate to WhatsApp, Fortnite and Comic Relief. We all have an important role in keeping our children safe in our ever growing online world.

Another great week in Year 4 made even better by a bit of lovely sunshine on Wednesday! This week, we have:

  • been learning about place value, both whole numbers and decimals, as well as discovering more about Roman Numerals
  • written some very descriptive pieces about the Ceremony of the Full Moon, which was stimulated by our current novel ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter
  • competed in an inter-class athletics competition between ourselves and Year 3 – we are incredibly proud of ourselves for taking part and being great competitors
  • made PowerPoint presentations about different landmarks in Italy, as part of our geography topic, and started to present these to the class
  • written our own prayers for Palm Sunday

HOME PRACTICE

Please complete a little home practice every night as this is the key to success!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday 31st March 2021.  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Use the link here to practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’. This is another excellent way to practise your tables.

Spellings

Your new spellings are all from the Year 3 / 4 Spelling list – a list of words which children should be able to read and spell by the time they leave Year 4.  The spellings will be tested on Thursday 1st April 2021.  There are some quite tricky words, so please practise them carefully each evening.

exercise      imagine        opposite      regular        calendar

experience   important    ordinary       remember    caught

experiment  increase       particular    separate      certain

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the above spellings
  • A maths challenge related to decimals (tenths)
  • A maths challenge based on the 3 and 6 times tables (we have revisited these this week!)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

HOME PRACTICE Friday 19th March 2021

Date: 19th Mar 2021 @ 3:47pm

Year 4

Home Practice 19th March 2021

We will now be reverting back to Home Practice which can be found on the Year 4 Class Page each Friday.

Home Practice will provide a short insight into our learning from the week, as well as tasks to be completed.  These will include reading, tables, spellings and Sumdog challenges.  It is important that you compete these tasks, as they will help you to progress further with your learning.

We have had a super week in Year 4.  We’ve revisited place value in Maths and refined some counting skills, especially counting in 4’s and 8’s. In English, we wrote a letter from a character to her father and tried to think carefully about the types of sentence we were writing – whether it was a command, statement, question or exclamation.  Our science topic has been very interesting – we recorded results from an experiment to see the effect of different liquids on egg shells and were amazed by the results! In addition, we made our own digestive system – it was gruesome!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

You can find even more books to read on our website.  Go to Year 4, Home Learning and click on Oxford Owl.  Use the class login and password and explore lots of books to read.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (24th March 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Spellings

The spellings this week are irregular plurals.  Each time ‘ves’ needs to be added to the word ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’, to spell the plural. These words will be tested on Thursday (25th March 2021).  We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

calf              calves          half             halves          knife           knives

leaf             leaves          shelf            shelves        thief           thieves

yourself       yourselves    themselves

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the above spellings (adding ‘ves’ to some words ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’)
  • A maths challenge related to mental addition and subtraction facts within 1000
  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

Fabulous Friday 5th March 2021

Friday GIF by Todd Rocheford

It’s fabulous Friday! It’s also our last Home Learning Blog for this lockdown!

First of all, I’d like to say a big well done to everyone in Year 4 for working hard over the last 8 weeks.  I’m sure you’ve tried your best in all your work, even if you’ve found it tricky.  Thank you also for showing me your work on Seesaw and for the little messages you’ve sent – they really have brought a smile to my face.

In addition, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at home who has supported their children – whether this be helping with school work, keeping your child motivated or supporting them in any other way.  As a parent myself, I know this has been a tricky time and it is difficult juggling work, school work and emotional wellbeing on a daily basis.  Everything you have done is greatly appreciated.

Remember, Fridays are now a lighter day with limited screen time to give you and your families the chance to catch up and switch off!

Today you just need to:

  • Read

Enjoy reading for pleasure - take time to finish a book you are enjoying or start something new.

  • Complete the maths activity attached to the blog (instructions are on page 4 of the document)

  • Finish anything off that you want to upload to Seesaw for me to see

If you wish, you may read the end of Kensuke’s Kingdom – Chapter 10 and the postscript. We will be finishing the book in class today as we will be starting a new novel next week.

The rest of the day is yours, you’ve earned it!

Don’t forget to see the Friday Catch-up video on Seesaw this evening!

Remember we will all be back in school on Monday – please bring your Home Learning into school on Monday, so that you can share your work with your classmates.  You should be proud of your learning!

I’m looking forward to seeing you all next week. smiley

HOME LEARNING Thursday 4th March 2021

Date: 3rd Mar 2021 @ 1:39pm

Year 4

Home Learning Thursday 4th March 2021

Good morning Year 4.  Welcome to World Book Day 2021!  Please upload a photo of yourself in your outfit to Seesaw.  In addition, write a message explaining why your favourite book is your favourite.  There is a £10 book voucher for the best message received – don’t worry if you don’t dress up, you can still enter the competition if you send in a message! You can also click on the link here. This will take you to a website where you can use a map to find out where your favourite book is set.

Have a fun Thursday Year 4.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Take notice of punctuation today, for example, full stops, commas, exclamation marks, question marks, inverted commas (speech marks) and apostrophes.  Can you work out why the author has used them? Would the book make sense without this punctuation?

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Tuesday 9th March 2021. They are all from the Year 3 / 4 Spelling list – a list of words which children should be able to read and spell by the time they leave Year 4.  There are some quite tricky words, so please practise them carefully.

The words are:

mention         probably      therefore    build            disappear     guide

natural           recent         though         although       busy            business

Write the long date Thursday 4th March 2021

Practise the spellings by splitting them up into chunks in different colours.

Eg probably   business      though

A spelling challenge has also been set on Sumdog.

English

Today, please re-read or listen again to Chapter 9 of Kensuke’s Kingdom. A copy of the book is attached to the blog or you can listen to Chapter 9 by clicking here.

Open the document called ‘Chapter 9 activity’ which is attached to the blog. All the instructions for the tasks are explained in this document.

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 11 and 12 times tables.

Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or a mixture of x4 and x8 if you are on ‘free’ tables.  Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed-up order.  This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.

Write the short date 04.03.21

Write the title Times tables test

Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.

Counting

Count in 100’s from 22 to 1222 and back again.  Count in 100’s from 537 to 1737 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in tens from 2.2 to 122.2 and back again – can you go any further?  (eg 2.2   12.2    22.2   32.2   etc) Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in tens from 53.7 to 173.7 and back again – can you go any further? (eg 53.7   63.7   73.7   83.7  etc) Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

What is the relationship between 100 and 10? Can you see any patterns in the numbers you have written down?

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Click on play game.  Choose Level 3 and Division. Depending on how confident you feel, choose a table from the ‘Up to 12’ or ‘Mixed tables’ column.  Choose your time interval and have a go.  Once you have played once, repeat the game and see if you can improve on your previous score.

Yesterday, we practised sharing and how to represent this as a written calculation. Today we will learn about grouping, which is another way to divide.

Remember we will be learning more about mental and written division (chunking) next week.  In preparation for this, it is important that you are confident with the basics of grouping and sharing.  It is also CRUCIAL that you learn your tables (and division facts) off by heart so that you are able to use them accurately and at speed, therefore please take 10 minutes each day to practise your tables / division facts. If you do this, you will be amazed at how your confidence will grow in a short space of time.

Write the short date 04.03.21

Write the learning objective Can I practise grouping?

Watch today’s teaching video here.

Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘Grouping’.

Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.

Draw a numberline to 24.  How many different ways can you get to 24 in equal jumps?  Make sure you write down all the possibilities in your book.

Science

Today we are going to start a topic on Teeth and digestion.

Before we start the lesson, click on the link here.

Plus is a good thing about it; minus is a bad thing and interesting is just an interesting thought you have about the subject of toothbrushes.

Write the long date Thursday 4th March 2021

Write the learning objective Can I identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions?

Download the powerpoint called ‘Teeth’ attached to the blog and work through it. There is a ‘Teeth map template’ attached to the blog which will help you when you come to slide 7 and the labeling activity below.

Label the teeth using a key (use one colour for incisors, another for canines and a third colour for molars. Put a key at the side to say which is which.) and explain what their jobs are underneath. Stick this in your book.

It is really important to look after your teeth because once you have your adult teeth, there are no more! Make a poster to explain 3 important ways we can keep our teeth healthy. Use slide 8, 9 and 10 to help. You might like to find out what kinds of foods are not good for our teeth and include this information too.

Remember to: write a big, bold cololurful title; use a balance of eye-catching pictures and writing; write clearly so that your writing can be read from a distance; use correct spelling and punctuation.

Well done – remember to brush your teeth really well tonight!

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 11 and 12 times tables)
  • A maths challenge all about whole numbers upto 10 000
  • A spelling challenge based on the new Year 3 /4 spellings

Please make sure you log on and have a go!  It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts.  In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.

A new spelling challenge will start tomorrow.

Well done for finishing today’s work.  Have a lovely evening and stay safe.

Now have a go at 48 ÷ 2    and     48 ÷ 4.

French

Please write the date in French: mardi deux mars and the learning objective:

Can I describe Matisse’s pictures using shape and colour words?

Today we are going to look at some of Matisse’s art works and use the shape language we’ve learnt over the last few weeks to describe them.

Download the PowerPoint attached to the blog called ‘Describing Matisse’. It asks ‘Qu’est-ce qu’il y a dans le tableau?’ What’s in the picture? Work your way through listening to the audio and repeating the sentences. Can you say some of your own descriptive sentences?

When you reach slide 9, write these sentences into your book. Then look at slide 8 again and write the number of any pictures that the sentence applies to.

Check your answers using slide 10.

Here’s a song to finish. How many words that you recognise can you hear? You could slow down the playback speed to make it easier.

Counting

Count in 100’s from 300 to 1500 and back again.  Count in 100’s from 450 to 1250 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in 50’s from 300 to 1100 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in 50’s from 450 to 1100 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

What is the relationship between 100 and 50? Can you see any patterns in the numbers you have written down?

Maths

Click here to play Fruit splat compare equations – this is the game that you played yesterday.

You will be given an equation eg 4 x 3 ___ 2 + 2

Work out both sides of the equation.   In the example above 4 x 3 = 12 and 2 + 2 = 4.

Decide whether the calculations are = (equal), the first calculation is > (greater than) the second; or the first calculation is < (less than) the second.

Click on the correct symbol.  In the example above, you would click on the greater than symbols, because 12 is > 4.

Today, try Level Two - you can choose an untimed or timed game.

Today, we are going to practise our mental maths strategies and complete an arithmetic test.

Make sure you have everything you need before you start:

  • A pencil and a ruler
  • Your Home Learning book OR a printed copy of the arithmetic test (attached to the blog)
  • A 20 minute timer
  • The arithmetic answers (to check your answers afterwards. These are attached to the blog)

Please make sure that you make jottings / show your working out – this is important as it helps to find any errors (if you make them!).  Try and complete the test independently and CHECK EACH OF YOUR ANSWERS CAREFULLY before you look at the answer sheet.  Remember, it doesn’t matter if you get an answer wrong, the most important thing is to find your mistake.

Before you start, please watch the two videos on Seesaw which will explain a couple of strategies.  These will be uploaded on Tuesday morning.

Good luck!

Please post your work on Seesaw so that I can see how you got on!

Home Learning Monday 1st March 2021

Good morning Year 4.  Welcome to your last week of Home Learning! I’m sure you’ve heard that we will all be in back in class together again next Monday (8th March). What exciting news!  In addition, Thursday 4th March is World Book Day.  Join in the fun by dressing up as a book character on Thursday.  I’m looking forward to seeing a photo of your outfit uploaded to Seesaw along with a message about your favourite book, explaining why it is your favourite.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Explain which part of the book was the most exciting or interesting. Make sure you include reasons why you think it was exciting or interesting.

Spelling

Last week’s spellings all had the suffix –ation. Children in school will be tested on them today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on them.

Write the long date Monday 1st March 2021

Write the title Spelling test and complete the test underneath.

The words are:

education       sensation     creation       celebration  punctuation  expectation

calculation      hesitation    imagination  invitation     location        investigation

New spellings will be given tomorrow.

English

Today, please read or listen to Chapter 8 of Kensuke’s Kingdom. A copy of the book is attached to the blog or you can listen to Chapter 8 by clicking here.

Make sure you look up any words if you are unsure of their meaning. Try and work out the meaning of the word from the sentence before you look it up in a dictionary.

Open the document called ‘Events in Kensuke’s life’ which is attached to the blog. You may either print this sheet out or complete the writing straight into your Home Learning Book. All the instructions for today’s task are explained in this document.

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 11 and 12 times tables.

Please practise your own tables target using Hit the button. If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky.  If you are in school this week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 4th March 2021 – if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on a mixture of 4 and 8 times tables.

Counting

Count in 10’s from 45 to 185 and back again.  Count in 10’s from 62 to 202 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 6.5 to 8.3 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 9.5 to 11.2 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

How many 0.1’s (tenths) are there between 6.5 and 7.5?

Maths

Click here to play Fruit splat compare equations

You will be given an equation eg 4 x 3 ___ 2 + 2

Work out both sides of the equation.   In the example above 4 x 3 = 12 and 2 + 2 = 4.

Decide whether the calculations are = (equal), the first calculation is > (greater than) the second; or the first calculation is < (less than) the second.

Click on the correct symbol.  In the example above, you would click on the greater than symbols, because 12 > 4.

Try Level One to begin with and see how you get on!  You can choose an untimed or timed game.

Today, we are going to learn how to compare area.

Before you start, write down everything you can remember about area so far.  Can you give a definition? What is a closed shape? Last week you learnt 2 different ways to calculate area, what were they?

Write the short date 01.03.21

Write the learning objective Can I compare area?

Watch today’s teaching video here.

Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘Comparing area’.

Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.

Check your answers with the document ‘Comparing area answers’ attached to the blog.  Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to understand why you made the error. Can you write a sentence to explain what you have learnt today?

RE

Please open the document called ‘RE Ways to say sorry’ which is attached to the blog.  All the information for today’s RE lesson is explained in this document.

Geography

Home Learning Thursday 25th February 2021

Good morning Year 4.  I hope you have had good week so far and are back in the swing of Home Learning again.  As it’s Fairtrade Fortnight, I have attached a sheet to the blog with some activities you may like to try.   You may also like to learn more about Fairtrade by visiting their website here.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Ask someone questions about the chapter you have just read. Start your questions with each of these words: who; what; where; when; why; how; which, and explain.

Remember if you need any new reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Monday 29th February 2021. They all have the suffix -ation.

A SUFFIX is a string of letters that go at the END of a root word, changing or adding to its meaning.   Suffixes can show if a word is a noun, adjective, adverb or verb.  Sometimes root words change when suffixes are added (eg create could become creation, created or creative, imagine could become imagination, imagined or imaginative).

The suffix -ation is added to verbs to form nouns.

education       sensation     creation       celebration  punctuation  expectation

calculation      hesitation    imagination  invitation     location        investigation

Write the long date Thursday 25th February 2021

Practise the spellings by splitting them up into chunks in different colours.

Eg education  creation       hesitation

A spelling challenge has also been set on Sumdog.

English

Today you are going to be writing the next chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom which you planned yesterday.  Read over your planning ideas from yesterday.  You should be in a good position to start your writing.

Write the long date Thursday 25th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I write the next chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom?

When you are writing please focus on:

  • Handwriting – neat and joined up correctly – please sharpen your pencil before you begin!
  • Capital letters for proper nouns (places and people)
  • Ambitious vocabulary
  • Past tense (it has already happened) and third person (using the pronouns he, she, it, they etc)
  • Paragraphs (start a new paragraph for each part of the chapter eg the opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending)
  • A variety of sentence openers (see ISPACE and your ideas from yesterday)
  • Connecting sentences using words such as and, but, or, yet, so
  • Including some correctly punctuated speech BUT NO MORE THAN 6 SENTENCES OF SPEECH

Please time yourself and write for 20 minutes.  It does not matter if you do not finish your chapter within this time, however, you should have written nearly one side of A4 in 20 mins.

Read over your work.  Then time yourself to write for another 5 minutes.

Read over the last 5 minutes work.

Please give your chapter a title which is appropriate.

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or a mixture of x3 and x6 if you are on ‘free’ tables.  Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed-up order.  This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.

Write the short date 25.02.21

Write the title Times tables test

Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.

Counting

Count in 10’s from 280 to 450 and back again.  Count in 10’s from 1950 to 2100 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 2.8 to 4.5 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 19.5 to 21.0 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

What is the relationship between 0.1 and 10?

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Click on play game. Choose Level 3, Ordering, Smallest first, Three-digit numbers.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.

You will be given 3, three-digit numbers and you will have to write them down in order from smallest to largest. Remember if the hundreds are the same, you will have to look at the tens to see which has the largest value.

Eg 953    958    932                     Smallest to largest  932   953   958

All the numbers have 9 hundreds.

Look at the tens.  One number only has 3 tens, so this is the smallest.

Now compare the units / ones.  953 number has 3 ones and 958 has 8 ones.  Therefore 958 is the largest number as it has 8 ones.

Today, we are going to learn more about area.

Before you start, write down everything you can remember about area so far.  Can you give a definition? What is a closed shape? How can you calculate area?

Write the short date 25.02.21

Write the learning objective Can I make shapes with different areas?

Watch today’s teaching video here.

Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘Making shapes’.

Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.

Check your answers with the document ‘Making shapes answers’ attached to the blog.  Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to understand why you made the error. Can you write a sentence to explain what you have learnt today?

Science

Please open the sheet called ‘The Surface of Mars’ attached to the blog.  Everything you need for your science lesson is explained in this document.

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables)
  • A maths challenge all about decimals – tenths
  • A spelling challenge based on this weeks spellings (-ation)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!  It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts.  In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Have a close look at the sentence openers when you are reading today.  Does the author use a wide variety of openers? What sort of words do they use? Can you identify what sort of openers they are? Are they adverbs (often start with -ly); -ing words; pronouns (eg he, she, I) etc. Can you try and use these types of openers in your next piece of writing?

Remember if you need any new reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Repeat the game from yesterday. Can you choose a shorter time interval or get more questions correct using the same time interval as yesterday? Make sure you play the game a couple of times to improve your ability to halve quickly.

Click on play game. Choose Level 3, Doubles/Halves, Halves up to 500.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.  These are quite tricky so make sure you give yourself enough time to work them out!

Remember to make jottings to help yourself.

Eg Half 678                  Partition into 600     70      and     8

Half 600 = 300       Half 70 = 35      Half 8 = 4      300 + 35 + 4 = 339

(You could further partition 70 into 60 and 10.  Half 60 = 30   Half 10 = 5   30 + 5 = 35)

Please make sure that you make jottings / show your working out – this is important as it helps to find any errors (if you make them!).  Try and complete the test independently and CHECK EACH OF YOUR ANSWERS CAREFULLY before you look at the answer sheet.  Remember, it doesn’t matter if you get an answer wrong, the most important thing is to find your mistake.

Before you start, please watch the video on Seesaw which will explain a couple of strategies.  This will be uploaded on Tuesday morning.

Good luck!

Please post your work on Seesaw so that I can see how you got on!

RE

When people gather at Mass on Sunday, they bring with them their joys and sorrows, their giving and receiving, the good they have done and those things they are sorry for.

Life is full of giving and receiving (taking) and sometimes gets out of balance. The Mass helps people to reflect on their daily lives and challenges them to try again. It gives Christians the strength and courage for this and the knowledge that they are supported in love and prayer.

Jesus understood very well how people often find it hard to love as much as they might do.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus explains how God loves and gives advice to us on how to love better. Read Matthew 5: 45-58 which is attached to the blog.

Write the long date Tuesday 23rd February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I describe how I can apply Matthew 5: 45-58 to my daily life?

The reading tells us something about what God’s love is like.

What do you think is the most important piece of advice in this text?

Choose your favourite lines from the reading and write them in your Home Learning Book in your best handwriting.

Then, describe why you especially like these lines.  What images or thoughts do they give you? How do they make you feel? How can you apply them in your daily life? How could these words shape your life? Please write these descriptions in your book.

Decorate your work beautifully by adding pictures or patterns to your work.

Please share your beautiful work on Seesaw.

Music

Please click here for today’s music lesson which is all about rhythm and pulse.  You will learn what rhythm is, how to represent rhythm with symbols, and perform a rhythm too.

Please send upload a video on Seesaw of one of your performances!

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 2 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables)
  • A maths challenge all about decimals – tenths

Please make sure you log on and have a go!  It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts.  In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.

A new spelling challenge will start tomorrow.

Well done for finishing today’s work.  Have a lovely evening and stay safe.

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Please practise your own tables target using Hit the button. If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky.  If you are in school this week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 25th February 2021 – if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on a mixture of 3 and 6 times tables.

Counting

Count in 2’s from 0 to 30 and back again.  Count in 2’s from 84 to 112 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in 20’s from 0 to 300 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in 20’s from 840 to 1120 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

What is the relationship between 2 and 20?

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Click on play game. Choose Level 3, Doubles/Halves, Halves up to 250 Multiples of 10.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.

Remember to make jottings to help yourself.

Eg Half 250                  Partition into 200 and 50

Half 200 = 100       Half 50 = 25      100 + 25 = 125

(You could further partition 50 into 40 and 10.  Half 40 = 20   Half 10 = 5   20 + 5 = 25)

Repeat this game a couple of times and see if you can calculate more quickly and accurately each time.

Today, we are going to learn what area is.

Write the short date 22.02.21

Write the learning objective Can I show an understanding of area?

Watch today’s teaching video here.

In the video, we are given some important words and their definitions (eg area, closed shape, < = > symbols etc) Write these down in your Home Learning Book so that you can refer back to them later on!

Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘What is area?’

Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.

Check your answers with the document ‘What is area answers’ attached to the blog.  Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to understand why you made the error. Without looking at any notes you made, can you write a definition of area?

RE

Last Wednesday (17th February) was Ash Wednesday.  Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent.

Lent lasts for 40 days. During Lent, Christians prepare for Easter when Jesus suffered, died, and rose from the dead.  Christians prepare for Easter in three ways: they pray, fast (resist temptation) and do acts of kindness. By doing these things, they grow in love of God and other people.

Today, please write your Lenten Promise on the cross attached to the blog and place it where you can see it at home.  Make sure you decorate your cross beautifully too. Your promise should be something you can do to make yourself a better person. For example:

I promise not to argue with my brother or sister.

I promise to help my Mum and Dad with jobs every day.

I promise to do a kind act for someone each day.

Please share your work on Seesaw.

Geography

Today we are going to start our new geography topic - a country study of Italy.  This will link to our last history topic, Romans.. (If you remember, in our first couple of Roman history lessons, we discussed the story of Romulus and Remus and learnt how the Roman Empire grew).

Please open the document called ‘Italy’ attached to the blog for full instructions.

Please share your work on Seesaw.

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables)
  • A maths challenge all about decimals – tenths
  • A spelling challenge based on the homophone spellings you will be tested on tomorrow (a new spelling challenge will start on Wednesday)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!  It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts.  In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.

Year 4

Home Learning Thursday 11th February 2021

Good morning Year 4.  I have seen some super videos showcasing your dancing for St Oswald’s Dance Week. If you haven’t managed to send your video yet, keep practising and make sure it’s uploaded by 12 noon today, so that we can include it in our whole school video!  Click on the link here to see the dance video again.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Use lots of expression in your reading today.  Try and think about how the character would speak and what sort of voice they would have – a deep, gruff voice, or a high pitched squeaky voice?  How else might they speak?

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Tuesday 23rd February 2021 (when we come back to school after half-term).  They are another set of homophones.  Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelt differently.

him      hymn       new         knew      mist         missed         heel       heal

side     sighed     piece      peace     rain           rein              reign

Write the long date Thursday 11th February 2021

Practise each of the words using look, cover, write, check.

Choose some of the homophones and write your own sentences using them correctly. Make sure these are different to the words you chose yesterday.

For example, him and hymn.

The muddy football boots belonged to him.

My favourite hymn is ‘All things Bright and Beautiful’.

English

Today you are going to be editing the description of the storm you wrote yesterday. You will need a different coloured pen or pencil (to use like you would your purple editing pen).

  1. Read through your work carefully OUT LOUD (to check you haven’t missed out any words and that it makes sense!) At the bottom write 2 things you are proud of and 1 thing that you would improve if you were to write the description again.
  2. Read through your work and find a short sentence where more information could be given – use a different colour pen or pencil to edit it (could you use and, but, or, so, because, when, while, as etc to extend the sentence)
  3. Read through your work and correct any words that need capital letters. Correct any words where you have a capital letter but it shouldn’t be there (correct with your coloured pen or pencil)
  4. Read through your work and include punctuation where needed, for example, is a sentence too long and you need to split it up with full stops?
  5. Read through your work and improve 3 sentence openers – check the ISPACE sheet from yesterday for suggestions and the last point on the success criteria
  6. Choose 3 words which you could change to more ambitious vocabulary.

Write the long date Thursday 11th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I edit my work?

Re-write your work in your best joined up handwriting with all your corrections. Compare it to the original.  Remember, writing is a process, we need to read, improve, read improve …..

Please share your edited work on Seesaw

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 2, 4 and 8 times tables.

Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or ÷12 if you are on ‘free’ tables.  Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed up order.  This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.

Write the short date 11.02.21

Write the title Times tables test

Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.

Counting

Count in 10’s from 62 to 182 and back again.  Count in 10’s from 1947 to 2107 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?

Please count in 8’s from 100 to 196 and back again. Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Now count in 8’s from 40 to 160 and back again. Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Click on play game. Choose Level 3, Doubles/Halves, Halves up to 250 Multiple of 10.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.   Remember to write the answers down and to make jottings!

Eg Half 270               Partition into 200 and 70

Half 200 = 100     Half 70 = 35       100 + 35 = 135

(You could further partition 70 into 60 and 10.  Half 60 = 30   Half 10 = 5

30 + 5 = 35)

Repeat this game a couple of times and see if you can calculate more quickly and accurately each time.

Today, we are going to use the written method of multiplication to solve word problems. This will build on the work you completed on Monday and Wednesday.

Write the short date 11.02.21

Write the learning objective Can I use the grid method to solve word problems?

Please watch the videos which will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning. These videos will explain how to use the grid method and answer word problems successfully.

Please open the maths worksheet called ‘Multiplication word problems’ attached to the blog.

Complete the worksheet and answer the questions in your Home Learning book.  You must use the grid method AND write a sentence to answer the question as these are the strategies we are practising today!

Quite a few of you found multiplying a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number tricky yesterday.  Please try your best to work through the questions today – there are some examples of how to set out grid multiplication on the worksheet, as well as various videos you can watch on Seesaw from earlier this week.

Check your answers with the document ‘Multiplication answers’ attached to the blog.  Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to find where you made the error. Was it your multiplication or your addition which you found tricky?  Did you remember to write a sentence to answer the question properly?

Science

Click here to download today’s final lesson in this topic on the properties and everyday uses of gases.

Make a poster as suggested on slide 6, using the word bank to help you.

Write the long date Thursday 11th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I describe some everyday uses of Gases?

Then use pictures and writing to show off your knowledge. A good example of the poster is shown on slide 9.

Can you find out what kind of gas is in crisp packets and why? You could add this to your poster.

Air is actually a mixture of gases – can you find out what they are? A good way to show the composition of air is to draw 100 small circles, representing the ‘whole’ (100%) of air. Colour them according to the percentage of each gas in air eg oxygen makes up 21% of air so you would colour 21 circles one colour to represent this. What is the rest? Remember to put a key at the side to say which gas each colour is. Add this to your poster too!

If you have a balloon, some bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, you could try the balloon experiment described on the left of slide 7. You could just mix the bicarb and vinegar and watch! Do this where you can clean up easily! What gas have you made in this chemical reaction?

I hope you’ve enjoyed this topic on solids, liquids and gases – the states of matter. You have worked as proper chemists to investigate their properties. Well done! We’ll move on to a new topic next half term.

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

French

First let’s recap the phonics sounds from the week before last by watching the video again. This week, you are going to try and write down the number and colour words that contain the sounds.

Before you start, write the date and learning objective in your book:

mardi dix février

Can I use phonics to help me spell French words?

Then write each of the phonic sounds, leaving space underneath each to write down the words that have the sound in. Spread them out on your page. The sounds are:

Ou                 eu                an                oi                 in/un            i                   on

Now listen to Emilie again, pausing the video when she asks you to think of the numbers and colours that have that sound in. You have a go at writing the words under the right sound then start the video again to check your spelling. Please correct it if you make a mistake. Mistakes are fine! They help us to learn.

Key French sounds - C'est Emilie

Can you add any more words you know to each list? What about any day of the week? Some animals - un lapin? Some fruit – une poire?

Now we are going to learn how to describe where things are in a picture. Click on this link. Then click on lesson 15 with audio and work through the Powerpoint.

In your book, on a new page, put the learning objective:

Can I describe where things are?

Copy slide 8 adding the words in the correct place. See if you can get ‘au centre de’ in the centre of your picture rather than where they’ve put it!

We are working towards doing a piece of artwork then describing it. That’s why you’ll need these words. Merci beaucoup! A bientôt!

Half 20 = 10       Half 8 = 4      10 + 4 = 14

If you are feeling confident, have a go at Level 3, Doubles/Halves, Halves up to 100.

Eg Half 134                 Partition into 100    30     4

Half 100 = 50     Half 30 = 15       Half 4 = 2        50 + 15 + 2 = 67

Repeat this game a couple of times and see if you can calculate more quickly and accurately each time.

Before you start, please watch the video on Seesaw which will explain a couple of strategies.  This will be uploaded on Tuesday morning.

Good luck!

Please post your work on Seesaw so that I can see how you got on!

RE

When you go to a film or watch a TV programme, it will begin with a title and a theme tune as an introduction to show that it is about to begin. The start of the Eucharist (Mass) is the same.

The start of the Eucharist has an introduction to prepare people for what is about to happen. Normally, the Sunday Eucharist will begin with a hymn, which may include something about the theme of that Mass or about people gathering. As this is sung, the priest and the servers walk in procession through the church towards the altar.

The priest kisses the altar first because it is a symbol of Christ. It is with Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit that the Church offers the Eucharist to God, the Father. The priest represents Christ and everyone at the Eucharist has their own part to take in the celebration. When the hymn is finished, the priest faces the people and makes the Sign of the Cross. The Eucharist has begun, the people gather in the name of the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit in a similar way to the way we gather for Collective Worship.

Write the long date Tuesday 9th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I describe what happens during certain parts of the Mass?

  • Answer the following questions in your Home Learning book. Please answer in FULL SENTENCES and copy words correctly, such as Eucharist.

  1. Why do you think it is necessary to have an introduction at the beginning of the Eucharist?
  2. What is carried in the procession at the start of the Eucharist and why do you think these symbols are used?
  3. Why does the priest kiss the altar?
  4. Who does the priest represent?
  5. What does the Sign of the Cross signify at the start of the Eucharist?

  • Listen to John Burland’s hymn 'Gather together'. Write an additional verse to the hymn and explain your choice of words.

Chorus:

Gather together                                            Verse 1: Share with each other

Gather together

Gather together and celebrate                       Verse 2: Sing with each other

Gather together

Gather together                                            Verse 3: Pray with each other

Gather together and celebrate
