Year 3 Home Practice 21st May 2021
Date: 21st May 2021 @ 12:55pm
We have had a very fun week in Year 3. We made beautiful pieces of ocean art after learning about the ocean and about how different creatures adapt to living in the deep sea. We also looked at the different oceans and seas in an atlas in Geography. We then squeezed in another Geography lesson; we couldn’t miss out on the Eurovision Song Contest. We had a lot of fun and laughter listening to the songs by some of the contestants, we rocked some of the dance moves (especially Iceland’s dance) and then we found out about the different countries by looking at maps.
In French we continued to practise reading and writing numbers and days and fruit vocabulary, ready to read The Hungry Caterpillar in French next week.
In Maths we have been focussing on multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number, we are getting very good at this. Knowing our times tables well helps a lot!
In English we have been focussing on splitting our writing into paragraphs and using good words to make our writing exciting.

Year 5 Home Practice Friday 21st May 2021
A great week Year 5, made even better with some lovely sunny days. In English, we have written letters about homesickness. Something that Boy (Roald Dahl) experienced at boarding school. The children used the text to say why he was homesick and how he could make it better. We have moved on to addition and subtraction in Maths, using near multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to add and subtract mentally and did some tricky problem solving. In RE, we made a collage of all the things we learned about the Holy Spirit and transformation. There were some very creative/artistic pieces of work, well done Year 5.
Reading
Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every evening. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book, look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find more information.
Y5 book changing day is Friday. Although, some children may change books at different times, so always bring your book bag into school every day. Remember to sign when you have finished a book, it makes it much easier to issue new books.
Remember to complete your ‘Reading Journal’ task. At the front of the journal there are activities for you to do using your current book or one you have just finished. Choose an activity, complete it in your journal (best presentation and handwriting!) and colour/highlight the square to show you have done it. Complete one activity per week.
Maths
This week’s challenge on Sumdog is based on addition and subtraction problems/ division facts. We will have a division facts test on Friday.
Spelling
There will be no Sumdog spelling challenge this week, so please spend extra time learning the spellings below.
Please learn these spellings for Friday (28.5.21): If you don’t know what a word means, look it up in a dictionary or ask an adult.

Year 2 Home Practice - 14th May 2021
Date: 14th May 2021 @ 3:54pm
Well done for all your hard work this week Year 2!
This week in English, we started our new story, Georges Marvellous Medicine. We have looked at George’s grizzly old grunion of a Grandma and we created some great character descriptions. We have also looked at poetry and rhyme. We attempted to create our own medicine poem. In Maths, we have looked at place value and placing numbers on different number lines. Our bean plants and cress are looking great and we have kept up with our diaries, carefully monitoring how they grow. In French this week, we started by trying to use our French phonics to spell numbers. We are getting better! Then we read the story Je m’habille et je te croque about a wolf who puts his clothes on before eating someone. We tried to learn the words for clothes by playing some games. During Mental Health Week we have made it a priority to get outside in the fresh air. We even managed to take part in some relaxing meditation sessions. This helped to focus our minds and let go of any worries we had.
Well done to the 22 children who have had a go at the SumDog challenges this week. Those children will receive dojos for going on and completing the work set. There will be a prize for the child with the most individual dojo points this week.
Reading
In Year 2 we aim to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an older sibling or adult to help deepen your knowledge.
Reading books are changed every Monday so please remember to bring in your book bag.

Year 4
Home Practice 14th May 2021
A busy week in Year 4! Well done for working hard.
We refined our compact method of addition and recapped and revised our 6, 9 and 7 times tables. In English, we wrote our own Haiku’s and a character description of Grace, both of these were based on our class novel. We completed our Science topic ‘Teeth and digestion’ by looking at and learning more about food chains. We finished our Powerpoint quizzes about Italy and made sure that we included transitions, animations, and at least one hyperlink – we are so proud of what we achieved!
Reading
Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home. Make sure you discuss the story and the characters. Find the meaning of any new words too. Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.
Times tables
You have been given your own individual times table target. Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (19th May 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?
You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’. Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise. This is an excellent way to practise your tables. Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:
Some of you have asked if you can practise your times tables on the ‘Multiplication check’ program we used this week. Unfortunately, you cannot use exactly the same program at home. You can however play something very similar by clicking on the link below. You will be given 6 seconds to answer the question and there will be a gap of 3 seconds between each question.
Spellings
The spellings this week all have the suffix ‘sion’. A suffix is a group of letters that are added to the end of the word, and which change the meaning or make a new word. ‘Sion’ is usually used if the root word ends in ‘d’ (eg extend, extension) or ‘se’ (adverse, adversion). These words will be tested on Thursday (20th May 2021). We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’. The spellings are on Sumdog this week.
expansion extension tension suspension exclusion
explosion collision erosion invasion television
illusion confusion inclusion intrusion division
Sumdog Challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
- A multiplication tables check, similar to the check you completed in school this week
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 9 and 7 times table)
Please make sure you log on and have a go!
Year 6 Home Practice - Friday 14th May 2021
Date: 14th May 2021 @ 3:41pm
Welcome to the Year 6 blog. This week has been Mental Health Awareness Week where we discussed how to look after our mental health through: exercise, sleep, doing things they really enjoy, being kind to others and practicing gratitude. Also, we learnt about different medicines and how they can support our health and well-being.
We were lucky to have an online meeting with a hospital pharmacist who explained the job of a pharmacist and the training needed. She answered Y6’s questions about her job role and medicines in general. She was very impressed with the quality and range of the children’s questions. Well done Y6 and thank you to Rachel for her time.
Reminders:
- Do not forget to bring in your cycling booklet, ‘Passport to Safer Cycling’, which we would like to be completed and brought back into school by next Monday 17th
- Do not forget that your bike and helmet need to be in school on Monday 17th May for the bike check.
Our learning in Year 6 this week:
- In PSHE, we have chosen to focus on one thing that helps our mental health this week and learnt about ways to reduce worry and anxiety.
- In Maths, we have strengthened our knowledge of fractions: how to compare them, add and subtract proper, improper and mixed numbers.
- In English, we have connected the story of The Lost Magician to ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and how they both relate very closely. We have also been improving our prediction skill using evidence from the text and how to use commas more effectively.
- In PE, we started to learn the correct rules for ‘Quick Cricket’ and ‘Tag Rugby’.
- In RE, we have completed the topic of Witness by working in teams to write all the things we do for ourselves, our school and the community as we act as witnesses of God.
- For our Art lesson, we continued our PSHE discussion of ways to reduce worries, one of which was to ‘settle our thoughts’. Then we were inspired by the artists Bruce Gray and Wassily Kandinsky for our art work for drawing, colouring and pattern making to help us settle.
- In Music, we have learnt how to increase and decrease our tempo using the Boomwhackers and glocks.
- In French, we conjugated and used the verb jouer – to play in sentences about playing sports or musical instruments. Then we learnt that if a sport involves a ball, the verb ‘jouer’ is used but if we don’t ‘play’ other sports, we do them so we need the verb ‘faire’.
- For Science, we have practised our data handling skills and drawn excellent graphs of the results of our crisp burning experiment last week. We used them to try and find a pattern between how much energy they produced when burnt and the nutritional information on the packet. There seemed to be a link with the fat content, but not in all cases so scientists would repeat the test to delve deeper into this.
- Finally in History, we researched and presented information about the evacuees of World War II.
Well done to 95% of you for changing your book this week. Remember that reading is STILL your number one priority every day.
These are the days when you can change your reading book:
Monday – Dodgems
Tuesday – Roller Coasters
Wednesday – Big Dippers / The Waltzers
These are the tasks to be completed:
- Reading – Please keep reading for a minimum of 30 minutes every day.
Please complete the ‘Reading Challenges’ you have been given by answering them in your Reading Journals.
- Sumdog challenges:
- Times tables x7, x8, x9 (100 correct answers needed):
- This will be great to continue to know these times tables fluently.
- Multiply and divide numbers mentally using known facts (100 correct answers needed):
- Use your place value knowledge to quickly multiply and divide the numbers you see in the questions.
- Spellings (45 correct answers needed):
- Spellings with /acc/ pattern (part 3)
(accidentally, accept, acceptance, accessory, accident, accommodate, according, account, accessible, unacceptable, accuse, vaccinate, accelerate, accent, access)
Date: 14th May 2021 @ 12:46pm
We have had a very messy and fun week in Year 3.
We have made our own Ancient Egyptian mummies out of clay and tissue paper, we have experimented with celery and food colouring to find out about the function of different plant parts, and we have made gums and teeth out of salt dough in our PSHE lesson all about keeping our teeth healthy. We have worked so well as a team in all of these lessons and have been very respectful of the classroom by tidying and cleaning up after ourselves.
In Maths we have been looking at subtracting big numbers by using a written method and have been practising dividing by 5.
In English we have been focussing on using exciting words to describe – we might spot some good words to describe when we are reading at home.

A great week Year 5, you have been working very hard in all subjects. In Maths, we have moved on to coordinates and translations. We have completed our novel Room 13 by Robert Swindells and will move on to our next novel, Boy by Roald Dahl. I know a lot of you are looking forward to that. During outdoor learning, it was lovely to be outside in the sunshine, blossom spotting and our wild flowers are growing very quickly now. In Science, the investigation on bottle flipping was a success and the results and recording were very interesting. The storyboards you designed in RE were great and explained what happened on the road to Emmaus. You also used a lot of quotes from the scripture reading. The after school clubs have been a success, it
