Year 2 Home Practice Friday 19th November

Date: 18th Nov 2021 @ 5:10pm

BBC Radio Scotland - Pudsey Pays Out

Year 2 have had a great week of learning. In English, we have read The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Flat Rabbit. We have explored great vocabulary and interesting words which we can then use in our own writing. In Maths we have continued learning about subtraction and addition. In History, we started our topic on ‘The Great Fire of London’ and explored the timeline of events that took place. Science was very interesting; the children explored microhabitats. In PSHE we had a lovely circle time talking about Anti-Bullying and the focus this year is ‘One kind Word’. The children have worked hard this week to say lots of kind things to each other. In French, the children have recited a poem ‘Petit Escargot’ and made some cards to show their understanding. Bon Effort!

Reading

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an adult or older sibling. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

Please sign and leave a small comment when you have read with your child and make it clear that you have finished a book, then we know we can change it.

Reading books are changed every Monday and sent home on Tuesday. However, if you need to change a book another time, we will change it as needed.

Year 5 - Friday 19th November 2021

Date: 18th Nov 2021 @ 4:58pm

Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog

The children have had a good week in school, working hard and trying their best.

This week in year 5

In Maths, we have been looking at multiplication and division.  We have focused a lot on factors and factor pairs but also investigated prime numbers and how to find them.  It was a tricky start to the week but with hard work and perseverance the children were able to grasp the concept and ended up enjoying the topic.

In English, things are really getting exciting with Room 13.  The children are making fantastic links between things that happen at the beginning of the book, pictures they have looked at on various editions of front covers and what is happening as we read on.  We have recapped 1st, 2nd and 3rd person when writing and completed a diary enter for the main character Fliss on her first night at the Crow’s Nest Hotel.

In RE, the children had another visit to church and discussed our relationship with God and different types of prayer. In school we have studied the sacrament of Marriage and the symbols associated with that.

In PE, again, the children did one of two activities. The tag rugby session with Mrs Cookson was a muddy one!  The children started with a practise tag game, dodging the other team trying to get to the semi-circle without losing their tags.  Afterwards they moved onto the field for a game of tag rugby; they had a great time.  The dance session with Mrs Nuttall went very well.  The children split into teams and had to become tableaus of space related words e.g. a rocket, the Moon, a satellite.  Then they had to create a story, in their groups, by creating 4 tableaus with a movement in between.  They were extremely creative. We have the birth of the sun, rocks connecting to form a planet and a rocket moving through the solar system.  Photos have been added to the gallery.

In Geography, we learnt about lines of longitude and latitude, including the equator, tropic of Cancer and Capricorn and Greenwich Meriden. They learnt a song to help them understand that the invisible lines help us find where on the globe a location is.  They then had to plot different places on a World map using longitude and latitude coordinates.

In French, the children revised all the subject pronouns and the verb etre (to be). Then they wrote sentences using all the parts of the verb and adding a job, being careful to use the feminine form of the job if they were talking about a feminine subject.

Finally, on Friday we took part in Children in Need in our spotty outfits and we discussed bullying as part of anti-bullying week.  We discussed how one kind word, the theme this year, can make a big different to others.

Home Practice all relates to this week's learning - These are the tasks to be completed.

Reading - You all have a Home Reading book for year 5 so reading every night for 15-20 mins is essential. You also have a Reading Journal/Diary that must be completed and signed.

You can change your reading book on any school day (book bags to be left on Mrs Mulgrew's desk)

Spellings words containing over. We will look at these in more detail in school next week, they should be practised at home, ready for the test on Friday.

Don’t forget the children have a big list of Common Exception words to learn, these can be practised each week to push your child further.

Some children have been told to complete a different number of spellings, please check with your child.

covered, discover, government, undercover, overnight, uncover, overjoyed, recovery, overcome, overheat, overreacting, uncovered, overheard, recover, discoveries

Sumdog challenges

PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN TO COMPLETE THE SUMDOG CHALLENGES, MANY CHILDREN ARE STILL NOT ACCESSING SUMDOG.

Times tables have been set to reflect class targets.  If the children complete the challenges they can push themselves by accessing multiplication challenges on Sumdog.

Maths the children have been set activities relating to factors and factor pairs.  They will need to use their multiplication knowledge and the knowledge learnt this week to work out the answers.  They may need to do jottings.

Spellings words containing over.

The children have had another great week in school.

Bob's Best Ever Friend (Bartram, Simon Series): Amazon.co.uk: Bartram, Simon: 9781840119398: Books

In English, we read our new book called Bob's Best Ever Friend. Bob was very lonely and wanted to find someone to spend his time with. He eventually found Barry - an alien dog! We wrote about our own best friends, drew some funny alien pets, learnt all about space, and made some puppets of the characters in the story. We then acted out the story with our friends.

Ten Frame Combinations and Number Sentences by Tots with Tempo | TpT

In Maths, we have started our Addition and Subtraction topic and have reintroduced using a tens frame to add two numbers together. We then took it one step further and created 2 addition numbers sentences, as we learnt that we can swap the numbers around! For example, 6 + 4 = 10 but 4 + 6 also equals 10. We have worked well with each other to add bigger numbers together, using our superb mathematical reasoning skills!

Baptism Jesus Stock Illustrations – 8,081 Baptism Jesus Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime

In R.E. we have learnt all about Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan. We talked about why Jesus wanted to be baptised and how The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove. We talked about our own baptisms and how our experiences differed from Jesus'.

Dancing Robots Clipart | +1,566,198 clip arts

We loved our P.E. lesson again this week! We learnt a group dance to our 'I am a robot' song and began thinking about our paired dance. We were so proud of all the children's creative ideas and robot movements.

In French, we have recited a new poem called Petit Escargot and added some actions to it. We then drew pictures about the poem to show that we understood the French.

In History, we began learning about Neil Armstrong and how he was the first man on the moon. This linked perfectly to our Bob story in English and we were so excited to find out more! We drew some pictures of Neil in our books and watched the historic moment together.

In P.S.H.E we have been focusing on being a good friend and how one kind word can make a big difference. We loved acting out different scenarios in groups, we definitely have some potential actors in the making!

Everyone looked great in their spotty outfits to support Children in need.

Have a look at the gallery section to see all of our brilliant learning this week.

Home Practice

Read for at least 10 minutes every night. This is so important. please sign the diary so we can change the books. Keep practicing reading the Tricky Words on sight. Everyone has got a new set of words. Please just write a note in the diary if you need the next set.

Practice writing simple number sentences (for example 5 + 5 = 10) so that we can be confident when using the addition and equals symbols. Make sure they are in the correct place and the number sentence makes sense.

We have also been doing lots of counting. We have used a number square (to 100) to help with our counting as it allowed us to see the patterns visually.

Sumdog challenges

Phonics - Ew and oo words

Maths - Add within 20

Friday 12th November

Date: 16th Nov 2021 @ 4:21pm

This week we have finally caught Evil Pea. We had a video call from the Police to write wanted posters describing to them what he looked like. Our Dinner lady Mrs Speight found him hiding in the flour and froze him for the children to see.

We have also celebrated Judaism this week, we have watched videos of how they celebrate Hanukkah and we made our own Potato Latkes to try. We have also been outside making our own 'Stars of David'.

Have a look at some of our busy learning this week

Year 5 Sacramental Programme15th November 2021

Date: 15th Nov 2021 @ 5:04pm

The children have had another lovely session in church to help in preparation for their Sacrament or to support their friends on their journey.

This week Father discussed with them their relationship with God. He discussed the different types of prayer that there are e.g. speaking, singing, thinking and the different things that we can pray for - in November we pray for those that have died in conflict.

The children discussed with Father where they personally pray, what they pray for, when they pray and if they pray together as a family.

Father explained to them that prayer strengthens their relationship with God and that praying together can help bring families togther to celebrate things they are thankful for or share worries they need help with.

There is a Gospel reading from St Luke on the children's worksheet that we encourage you to read together, about the disciples asking Jesus to teach them to pray. In church Father asked the children if they could think of a prayer it reminded them of and the children made links to the Our Father. Father then went on to discuss the Our Father with the children and broke it down into separate parts so that the children could have a greater understanding.of the words they are saying to God when they use it during prayer times.

The children then went on to discuss how Mass is the most perfect form of prayer and they talked about the different parts of the service and the order in which they come.  The children have been given some Mass sheets from Father from this weekend to discuss with you at home.

On the final page of the worksheet is an activity to carry out at home, where the children can write a prayer of choice. In church they were shown how they can use each finger of their hand to pray for different people and they completed a sheet with their hand drawn on with five prayer suggestions to help them.

Remembrance Day - Church Office Closed — Bridgewater United Church

Year 2 have been working so hard this week and it really shows in the excellent pieces of work they have produced. In English, we have read Hansel and Gretel and The Little Story That Didn’t Want to Be Told.  The focus has been on using great adjectives and conjunctions to make sentences longer and more interesting. Our new topic in Maths is addition and subtraction. The children have been looking at partitioning a number into tens and ones to help with calculations. In History, we learnt about Remembrance Day and made poppies. Science was very interesting; the children explored microhabitats. We learnt all about Judaism in RE, with a focus on Shabbat. Keep up the great work everyone.

Reading

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an adult or older sibling. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

Year 6 Friday 12th November 2021

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 3:49pm

Year 6 have had a great week, celebrating Go Green Day this Friday (where we reduced electrics for the full day) and being respectful on Remembrance Day with a minute silence. Thanks to the School Ambassadors and School Council who have led the ‘poppy stall’ all this week, taking time out during break to oversee the money. They will be counting it up and are excited to see the school’s final amount.

This week in Year 6:

  • In Maths, we have been learning different strategies to subtract mentally and practising ways to multiply large numbers quickly.
  • In our novel, ‘Private Peaceful’, we have looked more deeply at the relationships between the main characters: Tommo, Charlie and Molly, as well as writing a persuasive letter from Mother to the Colonel.
  • For Remembrance Day, Year 6 created their own lovely poems based on Rudyard Kipling’s poem, ‘My Boy Jack’. They wrote really well as Jack back to their father. Some of Year 6 were even lucky enough to read theirs out loud at Golden Assembly.
  • In Geography, following our learning from last week, we learnt how tectonic plates can move in different directions (very slowly) causing many things to happen, including volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes.
  • For RE and Judaism week, we learnt about Rosh Hashanah (the New Year celebration for Jewish people) and created our own fact file about it.
  • In PE, we worked on our athletic skills through track and field events such as sprints, team sprints, speed bounce, javelin, basketball throw, vertical jump, long jump and triple jump. Congratulations to those chosen to be part of the athletics team for our indoor athletics competition next week.
  • In Art, we learnt about different ways of shading through hatching, cross hatching and contour hatching.
  • In Music, we have continued our learning of the glockenspiels, along with beginning to learn carols for Christmas.
  • In French, we read sentences about le Jour du Souvenir (Remembrance Day), finished a French pop song and gave our opinions in French.
  • In Science, we discussed more about the 5 types of scientific enquiry and looked back through our books to find examples of each. Then we investigated whether light travels in a straight line.

Home Practice all relates to this week’s learning. These are the tasks needed to be completed:

  • Reading – Use your Home Reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a Reading Journal/Diary that must be used for the title of the book and any reading challenge chosen.

Year 4 Home Practice Friday 12th November 2021

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 3:47pm

Year 4

Home Practice 12th November 2021

Well done for settling back into school Year 4. Some of you are now started to push yourselves by listening more attentively and producing work you are really proud of. Keep it up!

Here’s what we have been learning in school this week ….

In English we wrote our own description of the Ceremony and the Full Moon. We used what we had learnt about the Ceremony from the book and expanded the image by including our own ideas and descriptive language. In addition, we predicted what we thought would happen now that Lila had reached the Grotto of the Fire-Fiend. Some of Year 4 have fantastic imaginations – well done!

In maths we have been drawing and interpreting bar charts. We had to number the axis appropriately and use a sharp pencil and a ruler to draw the bars accurately. We have also been practising our tables, addition strategies and counting in 6’s and 25’s.

This week we have been exploring Judaism in RE. We learnt lots of information about the Torah, including where it is kept, what language it is written in and how many letters there are in it!  We also designed our own Bar Mitzvah card for a Jewish friend.

In Science we started our new topic, Electricity. We found out about the dangers of electricity and we wrote some safety rules. Then we used a gadget called an Energy Stick to demonstrate that electricity needs a complete circuit to flow. We loved this and raised lots of questions to test. Well done, year 4! We're ready to make circuits next week!

In PE we continued our dance unit, ‘Sparks Might Fly’. Year 4 created their own freeze frames and transition movements; these all related to using an electrical device or the way in which it moves. The freeze frames and transitions were then linked together and performed to the class. In our tag rugby session we practised our throwing and passing skills and tried to score a try!

In our French lesson we read a text in French about Le Jour du Souvenir (Remembrance Day) and chose the right words to fill in the blanks so that it made sense. Then we read it aloud in French.

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (18th November 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 6’s and 25’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 6’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 72 and back again (this will help with your 6 times tables)

0   6   12    18  etc                     72   66    60   etc

Start at 54 and count up to 102 and down again

54  60   66   etc                   102   96   90    etc

Count in 25’s

Start at 0 and count up to 325 and back again

25  50  75   etc           325   300   275  etc

Start at 450 and count up to 775 and back again

450  475   500   etc             775   750   725    etc

Spellings

The spellings this week explore words ending with the ‘k’ sound spelt ‘-que’ which is French in origin. Please practise your spellings each evening at home.  You will be tested on them next Thursday (18th November 2021). We have discussed in class different strategies you could use to help you learn them and you could always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

antique        mosque         opaque         unique          cheque

boutique      oblique         conquer        critique       grotesque

croquet        plaque          technique     mystique      picturesque

You have been set 2 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A times table challenge based on the 3 and 6 times tables

Please make sure you log on and have a go! Many of you are still not accessing Sumdog on a daily basis. Little and often is the key to success!

Number bonds

This week we have been practising adding numbers mentally. Please practise this using Daily 10.    Remember to partition numbers and use a numberline to help.

Eg 15 + 7 = 22

The number 7 can be partitioned into 5 and 2 to make this easier to calculate

eg 15 + 5 = 20                 20 + 2 = 22

Click on the link above, then on Play Game.

Click on the pink Select button and choose Level 2

Click on the purple Select button and choose Addition

Click on the green Select button and choose Upto 25.

Choose your time interval or ‘manual’ if you want to move on when you are ready.

Welcome to your Friday Blog

Runcorn residents to create poppies for Remembrance Garden | Runcorn and Widnes World

We have had an amazing week of learning in Year 3. Everyone is showing a brilliant attitude to their learning and we have been very impressed!

In our English learning we have been looking at vocabulary to improve our ideas. Everyone created some fantastic descrtiptions of Mr Stink's mystery photo, using some fabulous words. Here are some of our favourite sentences.

The man in the photo looked handsome in his bow tie and best suit.

The lady next to him looked beautiful and elegant. She looked like a movie star!

The seats were immaculately perfect and comfortable.

In our Maths learning we have been exploring pictograms and bar charts. We found this new learning tricky to start with but we have been very impressed with everyone's resilience. Well done Year 3!

Year 5 - Friday 12th November 2021

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 3:43pm

Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog

The children have worked well this week despite the disappointment of the cancelled trip.  As soon as a new date is confirmed we will let you know.

This week in year 5

In Maths we have completed perimeter for this half term, and moved onto statistics.  The children have worked really hard trying to read and interpret data from a graph.  It has been a tricky skill and they have concentrated and shown determination in gaining the skills needed.

In English we have continued with Room 13.  There is a lot of gasping as the children make links between things mentioned at the start of the book and things that transpire as we read on.  We have looked at letter writing and the features of a letter this week, alongside using our inference and retrieval skills to find evidence in the book to support answers to questions set.

In RE the children had their second visit to church and learnt about the different statues and paintings around the church and their significance.  They also discussed the meaning and significance of their name.  Finally in school we have studied Judaism and the festival of Passover.  We read the story of Moses, the 10 plagues and how he helped set the Israelites free.  We also discussed the Seder Plate and the significance of different foods during the Passover meal.

In PE the children did one of two activities, the opposite one from last week.  Half of the class took part in a tag rugby session with Mrs Cookson.  They worked really hard on throwing and passing the ball and trying to score a try.  The other half of the class started the dance unit called ‘Earthlings!’ with Mrs Nuttall.  They created their own movements for 16 counts that expressed who they were and then collaborated with a partner and performed for the class.  They then went on to create a 16 count dance to represent one of the planets in the solar system.  Again, they were very creative.

We read, understood and performed a poem called Braves Soldats in French. We came up with actions to fit the text to make our performance more exciting. Well done, year 5.

The children started their Geography topic on North America this week.  We started by recapping some of the foundations including the continents and the oceans.  We examined the use of a compass and used the cardinal directions, alongside an atlas, to describe the locations of the oceans in relation to the continents.  This again was a tricky concept and they worked really hard to understand it. Finally we used an atlas to examine the equator and discuss which continents were in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Finally on Friday we took part in the school’s ‘Go Green Day’.  We spent the day using as little electricity as possible, we discussed Climate Change and how we can help the planet.  The children made posters to show what they want for our world and how they could help make it happen.

Home Practice all relates to this week's learning - These are the tasks to be completed.

We have started our brand new book in English: Man on the Moon: A Day in the Life of Bob. We have been looking really carefully at the pictures-Bob never sees the aliens! We have been drawing and labelling picnic lunches for Bob and his friends. We drew our own aliens and described them. We wrote some questions for Bob and interviwed him about his work on the Moon.

Balancing Scales Clipart | Free Images at Clker.com - vector clip art online, royalty free & public domain

In Maths, we have moved on from measuring length and onto measuring mass (weight). We have experimented using balance scales and found out that we can compare the mass of different objects in the classroom. We have been using cubes in the scales as we learnt that we could easily count them in order to see how heavy/light an object is.

Year 5 Sacramental Programme 8th November 2021

Date: 9th Nov 2021 @ 12:20pm

The children had another successful session in the church this week, once again they were thoughtful and respectful and showed enthusiasm throughout.

This week Father Michael asked the children about their names. He asked them to have a chat with their parents about why they have the name they have. Father Michael discussed that his family have a tradition of naming their children after a Saint that has their feast day in that month.  Father Michael was born in September and it is the feast of St Michael on 29th September. Have a chat with your child about how you chose their name, perhaps a family tradition, a family name or someone you admired.

The children had a worksheet to complete in church. They also took part in treasure hunt this week looking at all the statues, memorials and paintings and learning about their significance. They also created an acrostic poem using their name and features/traits that they have.  Please have a look at the sheets that they brought home. There is an activity to complete together on the acrostic page and some discussions to have on the double page worksheet.

We appreciate your time and support in helping your children understand the significance of the work they are completing as part of their Faith Journey.

We have learned all about the Diwali festival in Art, making our own rangoli patterns using coloured rice and our own diya's.

We have enjoyed our 'Tots on tyres' programme this week and trip to the park :)

Year 4 Home Practice Friday 5th November 2021

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 4:05pm

Year 4

Home Practice 5th November 2021

Welcome back to another busy half term and the run up to Christmas! Year 4 have had a fabulous week of learning and now need to get back into the swing of completing their weekly Home Practice.

Here’s what we have been learning in school this week ….

In English, we wrote a letter from Lila (the main character in the book) to her father explaining her feelings about wanting to be a firework maker. We tried our best to include paragraphs and a rhetorical question.  In addition, we listened to the class novel, discussed new vocabulary and summarised the story.  During the grammar part of the lesson, we practised using co-ordinating conjunctions to extend sentences. We can now use a variety of these in our writing.

In Maths we used numberlines to help subtract numbers. Bridging 10 and 100 was involved and although many of us found this tricky, we have all made good progress. We also learnt more about tenths, especially pairs to 10 where decimal tenths are involved (eg 6.4 + 3.6 = 10).

In RE we explored how we are all unique and different. We understand that we should treat each other as we would like to be treated and wrote our own set of Golden Rules.

We also started our Roman’s topic in History. Initially, we discussed what we already knew, what we would like to know, where the Romans originated from and what the Roman Empire was.

In French we learnt about subject pronouns (I,  you, he. she. we, you, they) and the verb etre (to be) in the context of Remembrance Day. Next week, we will use this grammar to write about this special time.

In PE we started a dance unit called ‘Sparks Might Fly’ which complements our new science topic, Electricity. In addition, we learnt some new tag rugby skills.

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (11th November 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 6’s and 0.2’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 6’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 72 and back again

0   6   12    18  etc                     72   66    60   etc

Start at 36 and count up to 90 and down again

36    42     48   etc                   90    84     78    etc

Count in 0.2’s

Start at 0 and count up to 1.6 and back again

0.2    0.4    0.6   etc           1.6   1.4   1.2  etc

Start at 5.4 and count up to 7.0 and back again

5.4   5.6   5.8   etc             7.0   6.8   6.6    etc

Spellings

The spellings this week explore words ending with the ‘g’ sound spelt ‘-gue’. Please practise your spellings each evening at home.  You will be tested on them next Thursday (11th November 2021). We have discussed in class different strategies you could use to help you learn them and you could always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

rogue           league          tongue         plague          intrigue

Year 5 Sacramental Programme - Session 1

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 5:30pm

After each session of the Sacramental Programme, we will inform you through our class page what the children have discussed and any points that can be further explored at home. The children who are completing the programme will bring home their 'Thank God for Mass!' books to help you understand what they have done and help with your discussions.

This week the children started their sacramental journey at church with Father Michael, Catechists from St Oswald's, Mrs Mulgrew, Mrs Deighton and Mrs Nuttall.  The children were able to explore the church and find out about all the different sections and symbols. They stood on the sanctuary and spoke to Father Michael about the different things that are around the alter and their significance.  They spoke with school staff and the Catechists about the Baptismal font, the Reconciliation room and the Holy Oils used at different times in a Christian's life. The children also got the chance to walk around and look at the Stations of the Cross and the various statues and paintings within the church.  The children were very respectful and remained calm and inquisitive throughout.

All the children, whether they are taking part in the Sacramental Programme or not, will take part in the sessions.  All the children will have a folder and a worksheet each week to bring home but only the children completing the sacrament will have the booklet. The children not completing the Sacramental Programme will learn about the Sacraments as part of the RE curriculum and support their friends on their faith Journey.

Points to discuss at home.

Father Michael spoke to the children about various things and asked the children who had undertaken the sacrement of Baptism, to go home and speak to their parents about it. Fr Michael spoke about how Baptism was the start of the children's Faith journey and they were now embarking upon the next stage.

The children could perhaps look at photos of their Baptism, discuss who was there, who their Godparents are and their role in their Catholic journey and what happened at their Baptism.

The children who have not undertaken Baptism were still involved in the conversations and activities and were able to listen to stories that the other children could recall and support their friends on the next stage of their journey in Faith.

Year 5 Friday 5th November 2021

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 5:07pm

Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog

The children have settled back into school this week and been very grown up and respectful of one another during our RSE discussion sessions.

This week in year 5

In Maths we have been measuring perimeters. They have been investigating the different ways of calculating perimeters and practising using a ruler.  They have moved onto calculating perimeters with decimal places and perimeters of shapes that are not simply a quadrilateral.

In English we have moved onto our new book Room 13.  We have looked at the features of a suspense story, made predictions about what the story could be about and then we have made up our own nightmare story, trying to include features to create suspense.

In RE the children went over to visit the church, some children began their journey towards the sacrament of reconciliation and the children not undertaking the sacrament attended the session and supported their friends on their journey. The children were able to explore the church in a way that they are not usually allowed.  For more details please see the additional blog on the website (titled Year 5 Sacramental Programme - session 1)

In PE the children did one of two activities as they will swap next week. They were very creative.

In Science the children had their final classroom sessions on their Forces topic; the topic will conclude with the trip next week.  The children investigated simple machines, using pulleys and gears and learnt how machines can help change the amount of force needed for tasks.  The children also undertook a special session with Mrs Quilliam where they learnt about Sir Isaac Newton and how he discovered the force of gravity. They measured weight using Newton meters. Some of even managed to find a pattern between Newtons and Grams. One Newton = 100 grams. Well done Year 5!

In French the children have learnt about subject pronouns (I,  you, he, she, we, you, they) and the verb etre (to be) in the context of Remembrance Day. Next week, they will use this grammar to write about this special time.

The children also took part in a number of sessions for their Journey in Love (RSE programme). They learnt about the different life stages a person goes through, with particular attention to the puberty stage. We discussed the different stages both girls and boys go through and what will happen to their bodies at this time, but that this will happen at different times to one another. The children were very mature; we did have some giggles, but overall they were very considerate of others, listened and asked relevant questions.

Spellings prefix dis or mis). We will look at these in more detail in school next week, they should be practised at home, ready for the test on Thursday.  Now that we are back into the swing of things they have more than 10 spellings.

Some children have been told to complete a different number of spellings, please check with your child.

misinform, misguide, misplaced, misread, misspell, misunderstood, misjudge, disadvantage, disagree, disappear, discontinue, dishonest, dislike, disobey, displease.

Reading books are changed every Monday and sent out on Tuesday. However, if you need to change a book, we will change it as needed.

Year 6 Blog Friday 15th October 2021

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 3:38pm

Welcome to the last blog before the October half term holiday, as next Friday will be our INSET day. Year 6 have been brilliant these past 6 – 7 weeks: working hard, respecting the rules and routines we have in place, and completing the Home Practice in time.

This week we chose a tag rugby team to take part in the South Ribble Tag Rugby competition for next Tuesday 19th October. Congratulations to those who were chosen. Our aim this year is for every Year 6 to represent the school in a sporting competition, something we have not been able to do since 2019.

We have had another week of excellent effort with 97% changing their books and completing their Home Practice on time. Every Year 6 is showing themselves to be great role models for the other children, especially during lunch time where they have worked extremely hard as ‘Buddies’.

This week in Year 6:

  • In Maths, we have practised the 7 times tables, rounding numbers to 1, added decimals mentally and used the written method effectively.
  • In English, we completed the novel, ‘Clockwork’, discussed what we thought about the story and the ending, and then created some of our own.
  • In our topic of Mountains, in Geography, we worked as teams to learn about the main 10 features (slope, face, foot, valley, outcrop, slope, ridge, summit, tree line, snow line )
  • For RE, we continued our topic of ‘Vocation and Commitment’, and retold the story of the Baptism of the Lord, as John the Baptist.
  • In PE, many of us have learnt a new skill/sport as Year 6 have all become super tag rugby players. Positioning, speed and defence were the main objectives this week.
  • In PSHE, our topic has been about mental health and as this week is Mental Health week, we put all our learning together to create a ‘self-care plan’ for others to follow.
  • In Music, boomwhackers have been our focus to create our own unique beats and we continued perfecting ‘Hot Cross Buns’ on the recorders.
  • In French, we used a weather map of France to describe the weather in different places. Some of us made the sentences more complex by adding conjunctions and adjectives.
  • In Science, we researched and presented our findings on a specific invertebrate group, e.g. arachnids, molluscs, etc.

Home Practice all relates to this week’s learning. These are the tasks needed to be completed:

  • Reading – Use your Home Reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a Reading Journal/Diary that must be used for the title of the book and any reading challenge chosen.
    • The days when you can change your book:
      • Monday – Roller Coasters
      • Tuesday – Big Dippers
      • Wednesday – The Waltzers

  • Spellings (-sion / -ssion / -cian words)
    • Sumdog (-cian, -sion, -ssion wk 7)
    • We will be learning the -sion, -ssion spellings again, along with -cian words, which will be looked in detail from Monday:
      • politician, magician, electrician, optician, musician, technician, Egyptian, vision, session, decision, permission, compassion, expression, progression, impression

  • Maths challenges:
    • Counting
      • This week we have counting in fraction steps of ½, ¼ and 1½ . Try to do the same out loud or with paper.
      • Draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers as you count up or down, then double check it to make sure you have said the correct numbers.
      • g. Start with different numbers and count up 10 numbers then back again in halves:

2½, 3, 3½, 4, etc

Start at 27 and count up 10 numbers and down again:

27, 27½, 28, 28½, etc

Now try in ¼ with these numbers:

6, 6¼, 6 2/4, 6¾, 7, 7¼, etc

Finally keep trying to count forward and back in 1½ steps:

8, 9½, 11, 12½, 14, 15½, 17, etc

  • Sumdog (Times Tables x12)

  • Sumdog (Rounding decimals and comparing to fractions)

Do not forget that next week, our last day is Thursday 21st October.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Reception 15th October 2021

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 3:33pm

This week we have been learning all about our families.

We have been drawing the family members that live in our house and looking at differnet types of houses and homes. Some of us had a go at constructing houses using the lego and duplo.

We have been on our first trip to Longton library this week too, the children were all amazing and enjoyed listening to the stories that Tom read to us.

In Understanding the World, we have been sorting toys that we used to play with as a baby to toys that we play with now. Thinking about the similiarities and differences we can spot.

In Art, we have been looking at Kandinsky's artwork and trying to make our own circle patterns with pastels and cutting out coloured paper.

We have nearly finished our first half term at St Oswald's! We would like to say a huge 'Well Done' to all of Reception, who have settled into school life really well.
