Year 4
Home Learning Tuesday 2nd March 2021
Good morning Year 4. Welcome to Tuesday’s Home Learning. I hope your Lenten Promises are going well and you are doing your best to keep your promise, whatever it may be. A reminder that it is Fairtrade Fortnight too. A sheet has been attached to the blog with some activities you may like to try. You may also like to learn more about Fairtrade by visiting their website here.
Reading
Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes. Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.
Ask someone else to read a page of the book to you. Listen carefully to their intonation (the way their voice rises and falls), expression and where they pause for punctuation.
Spelling
These are your new spellings which will be tested on Tuesday 9th March 2021. They are all from the Year 3 / 4 Spelling list – a list of words which children should be able to read and spell by the time they leave Year 4. There are some quite tricky words, so please practise them carefully.
The words are:
mention probably therefore build disappear guide
natural recent though although busy business
Write the long date Tuesday 2nd March 2021
Copy the words carefully into your book and find out the meanings of any words you are unsure of.
A spelling challenge has also been set on Sumdog.
English
Today, please read or listen to Chapter 8 of Kensuke’s Kingdom again. A copy of the book is attached to the blog or you can listen to Chapter 8 by clicking here.
Open the document called ‘Turning points’ which is attached to the blog. You may either print this sheet off or complete the writing straight into your Home Learning Book. All the instructions are explained in this document.
Please share your work on Seesaw
Times tables
A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 11 and 12 times tables.
Please practise your own tables target using Hit the button. If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky. If you are in school this week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 4th March 2021 – if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on a mixture of 4 and 8 times tables.
Counting
Count in 100’s from 300 to 1500 and back again. Count in 100’s from 450 to 1250 and back again. Think about what you found tricky? Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?
Please count in 50’s from 300 to 1100 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?
Now count in 50’s from 450 to 1100 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?
What is the relationship between 100 and 50? Can you see any patterns in the numbers you have written down?
Maths
Click here to play Fruit splat compare equations – this is the game that you played yesterday.
You will be given an equation eg 4 x 3 ___ 2 + 2
Work out both sides of the equation. In the example above 4 x 3 = 12 and 2 + 2 = 4.
Decide whether the calculations are = (equal), the first calculation is > (greater than) the second; or the first calculation is < (less than) the second.
Click on the correct symbol. In the example above, you would click on the greater than symbols, because 12 is > 4.
Today, try Level Two - you can choose an untimed or timed game.
Today, we are going to practise our mental maths strategies and complete an arithmetic test.
Make sure you have everything you need before you start:
- A pencil and a ruler
- Your Home Learning book OR a printed copy of the arithmetic test (attached to the blog)
- A 20 minute timer
- The arithmetic answers (to check your answers afterwards. These are attached to the blog)
Please make sure that you make jottings / show your working out – this is important as it helps to find any errors (if you make them!). Try and complete the test independently and CHECK EACH OF YOUR ANSWERS CAREFULLY before you look at the answer sheet. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you get an answer wrong, the most important thing is to find your mistake.
Before you start, please watch the two videos on Seesaw which will explain a couple of strategies. These will be uploaded on Tuesday morning.
Good luck!
Please post your work on Seesaw so that I can see how you got on!
RE
Please open the document called ‘RE Our Father’ which is attached to the blog. All the information for today’s RE lesson is explained in this document.
Music
Please click here for the second lesson in this music topic. Today you will be exploring how music is organised and look at music with 4 beats and 2 beats in a bar. Have fun!
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 11 and 12 times tables)
- A maths challenge all about whole numbers upto 10 000
- A spelling challenge based on the new Year 3 /4 spellings
Please make sure you log on and have a go! It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts. In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.
A new spelling challenge will start tomorrow.
Well done for finishing today’s work. Have a lovely evening and stay safe.

Handwriting
Please watch the video which will be on Seesaw in the morning.
Writing:
Today you are going to publish your rover story. I will tell you how we will do it in school, but you might choose to do something different like type it up on the computer or write it on lined paper or a new page in your book.
First:
Check that every sentence starts with a capital letter.
Check that every name starts with a capital letter (planet names, rover names, people’s names).
Check AT LEAST 5 spellings using your yellow dictionary.
How we will be doing it in school:
We will do all the writing in the morning, and illustrate, decorate and colour in the afternoon.
Get 3 pieces of plain A4 paper and fold them in half so they open like a book.
Put them inside each other to create a book, you could staple along the fold to keep them together.
Write the title of your story on the front page.
Carefully copy one paragraph from your story onto each page, you will have some spare pages to draw pictures on.
Please bring these into school next week so we can all show each other.
Times tables
Write the short date: 02.03.21
Write the title: Times Tables Test
Write the numbers 1-11 down your page.
Ask somebody to call out the following questions.
In school I always read the question out, count to five, read it out again and then count to three before moving on to the next question.
The bonus question is: 97 x 10.
If you get any wrong, practise a bit more and then try again.
- 12 ÷ 3 =
- 24 ÷ 3 =
- 6 ÷ 3 =
- 15 ÷ 3 =
- 30 ÷ 3 =
- 9 ÷ 3 =
- 18 ÷ 3 =
- 3 ÷ 3 =
- 21 ÷ 3 =
- 27 ÷ 3 =
Here are the answers:
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4
- 24 ÷ 3 = 8
- 6 ÷ 3 = 2
- 15 ÷ 3 =5
- 30 ÷ 3 = 10
- 9 ÷ 3 = 3
- 18 ÷ 3 = 6
- 3 ÷ 3 = 1
- 21 ÷ 3 = 7
- 27 ÷ 3 = 9
Sumdog
Go on Sumdog and complete the following challenges:
Number Challenge: 1st March – 7th March
Times Tables Challenge: 1st March – 7th March
Counting
Count out loud in 4s from 0 to 48:
Whilst doing star jumps
Whilst jogging on the spot
Whilst doing squats
Number Facts
Write down or tell somebody the totals of pairs of doubles up to 10 + 10.
Like this:
1 + 1 = 2
2 + 2 = 4
Maths
Today you are going to answer some arithmetic questions.
There will be some videos available on Seesaw in the morning which will remind you of the strategies we use for some of the questions.
After watching the videos, set a timer for 20 minutes and complete the questions.
After 20 minutes, check your answers yourself and then use the answer sheet to check.
Science
Next Tuesday in school we are going to be taking part in a live online Science lesson called Future Farming Robots.
The lesson will be run by Senior lecturer Paula and engineering researcher Megan from Harper Adams University.
We will get chance to look at their robotics lab to look at how robots can solve some of farming’s biggest challenges including - How can we improve soil health? How can we make growing crops more efficient? How can we farm areas that weren’t suitable for growing crops before?
At the end of the lesson, Paula and Megan will be answering questions sent in by children. So we are going to come up with some questions and I will send them in with the hope that we will have some of them answered.
Write the long date: Tuesday 2nd March 2021
Write the title: Can I suggest questions about the future of farming?
I would like you to write at least 3 questions (more if you want) and send them to me on Seesaw.
They might be about:
Paula and Megan
Robots
Soil
Farming
Tractors
Future technology
Jobs that farming robots might need to do
Art
Illustrate your rover story with pictures, patterns, borders and decorations.
Use colour to make it look exciting.
If you have typed your story, you could either print it and illustrate it or add images from the internet.
Reminders
Please keep sending me your work on Seesaw – I am so proud of you for the work I have seen so far. Today I would like you to send me a photo of your science questions.
Don’t forget to go on Sumdog.
Have a super day J I am so proud of each and every one of you!
Year 2 Home Learning - 2nd March 2021
Date: 1st Mar 2021 @ 2:42pm
Tuesday 2nd March 2021
Well done year 2 – another brilliant day of learning yesterday. Try and think of 3 things that you are thankful for today.
We really don’t have long now until we will all be together again, so keep working hard this week. It is really important to keep persevering and completing as much work as you can.
This week you will still have some Fairtrade activities and these will be posted at the bottom of the blog.
We will explain the structure on here each day but please refer to the additional uploaded documents for each specific lesson guidance and resources.
Reading
It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Reading challenge – VOCABULARY. Can you find 4 words from your book that are great words? If you have a dictionary or on a tablet search for ‘Word Hippo’ can you write what this word means or any other words which mean the same?
Resources for questioning your child while they are reading - VIPERS
Maths
This week in Maths we are learning about lines of symmetry.
Starter – Writing numbers on a number line.
You will need a ruler (or something you can draw a line with), number line or hundred square and a pencil.
I would like you to draw a number line and place these numbers on it correctly.
1 31 11 41 21 61 51 71
Now answer these questions:
- How did you sort the numbers?
- How did you know which number came next?
- What is the pattern showing for these numbers?
- Tell an adult about the tens and ones in the numbers?
This week our lessons focus on lines of symmetry and symmetry of shapes.
What is Symmetry?
When we think about symmetry the most important thing is that on either side of the line the shape looks the same as the other. They are the same. If the shape does not look the same on each side it does not show symmetry.
For your lesson today please click to watch the video link and complete the attached worksheet.
We have uploaded an additional document named 'CHALLENGE'. This is only intended as extension work to challenge and push your learning. You are not required to complete this sheet.
English
What is a persuasive writing?
Where might we see persuasive writing?
Here is a reminder of the letter we received in school yesterday:
Dear Mr Ingram and Miss Bennison,
It’s me, Glue Stick. I am writing to tell you that I have decided to quit my job as your class Glue Stick. First of all, I would like to say that I love being the class glue stick. It’s great to see all the children using me to stick in their precious work. Also, I love it when I am used in Art. Art is my favourite subject. I wish to congratulate Year 2 for a successful “glueing in career” so far, you are all doing an amazing job. However, some children in your class leave my lid off and I am DYING! I go all dry and horrible. Furthermore, there are some children who use too much of me. One child the other week used half of me on one piece of paper. Can you believe that? I need a break! Try to use me more sparingly and remember to put my lid on!
Your dry, horrible and soon-to-be ex-friend,
Glue Stick
Please see the attached Word document for more details on today’s lesson.
Phonics and Spelling
Phonics play have made their website free to use throughout January. Login -> select the resources tab -> select phase 6 phonics and have a play!

Today we will be focusing on the homophones their, they're and there
Please see the spellings below, which we would like you to learn this week. Children in school will be given a spelling quiz on Friday 5th March. These spelling can be practiced on Sumdog by selecting the ‘Spelling Quiz’ challenge.
bare/bear |
blue/blew |
here/hear |
there/their/they're |
quiet/quite |
night/knight |
to/too/two |
see/sea |
be/bee |
sun/son |
Start by trying to match the picture or description to the correct word.
Their, they're or there
Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. 'Their', 'they're' and 'there' are homophones that often confuse people.
Their means it belongs to them, e.g. "I ate their sweets."
They're is short for 'they are' e.g. "They are going to be cross."
There refers to a place, e.g. "I'm going to hide over there."
Although they sound the same they have entirely different meanings. They’re putting all their toys in the cupboard over there. In other words, there is a place. Their shows ownership. They’re is short for they are.
Please follow the link below for a short video and some interactive games - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjpytrd/articles/zfhxxyc
Work through today’s PowerPoint presentation and have a go at the worksheet attached to the blog.
Music
Here is the link to your music lesson this week. https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/rhythms-6rtp6c
French
Here’s our favourite fruit song to remind us of the fruit words.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ03KjwiIVM
Now we’re going to learn how the French say the vowels – a,e,i,o,and u. Their alphabet contains the same letters as ours but they have different names for the letters. Listen to this vowel song a few times until you can say the vowels in French. They also count y as a vowel sometimes (but so do we – sky, try, fly. All words need a vowel in them but these words only have a y!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXPUmC51wGc
Now you can play a game of Battleships using fruit and your new vowel words. There is a sheet in the resources with the instructions on.
Amusez-vous bien! A la semaine prochaine. See you next week!
Fairtrade Activity
The choices that we make can affect the planet and the people that live on it in positive and negative ways. Make a choice that is positive for people and planet today!
Write a sentence and draw a picture explaining your choice.
Sumdog Challenges

English (split into three parts: Handwriting, Spellings and Writing)
Handwriting
The handwriting poems this week are based on seasons through the year. This week focus on forming each letter correctly, which we have done before but this is something we will do in detail next week when you are all back so practising this is a going to help.
Still Winter
Ambushing snowdrops,
Beheading buds,
Drowning daisies
In sudden floods,
Old Mr Winter
Won’t let go,
Arthritic fingers
Dipped in snow.
Grey mist clinging
Like old news,
Badger talking
One more snooze.
Blackbird singing
In freezing rain,
Screech Owl calling;
Night again.
Cold rat feasting
On the scrap-heap,
Frosty paw-prints,
Earth half-asleep.
All things hoping
Spring comes soon,
Snuggle under
Frosty moon.

Download the Powerpoint and work through it. There is a choice of two tasks on the last slide.
Your poster can be done on a computer or in your book. There is a choice of cartoon strip templates in the resources.
Enjoy!
Fairtrade
This lesson focuses on the difference between wants and needs, and to identify what all humans need to live a decent life.
Task 1:
Think of these questions and note down any of your responses:
- What do you need to happy and healthy?
- Of those things, what are the most important?
- Of those things, what are the least important?
There is a difference to wants and needs. A need is something a person needs to survive and a want is something that is nice to have.
Task 2:
Use the ’12 Wants and Needs cards’ at the bottom of the blog to divide into two categories: needs and wants.
From your two lists, are there some that we can live without?
Task 3:
Select the needs cards that you might need to pay for e.g. healthy food, medicine.
Not all people in the world have enough money to meet their basic needs. Without enough money, it can be difficult to lead a healthy and happy life. Many of the farmers who grow cocoa for our chocolate are not paid enough money to meet their basic needs, even though they work hard.
Read Theresa’s story, on the PowerPoint, which shows how Fairtrade can help farmers and workers to meet their basic needs.
Then think about what can be done to ensure that all farmers and workers get their basic needs met.
Sumdog – Three challenges
-
- Division of 2/3 digit numbers (200 target)
- Fluency with division facts (200 target)
- Spellings ‘long /y/ sound’ (45 target)
Well done. Another day completed!

Watch this video to see how to do it.
https://learning.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/resources/rocket-mice/
For the ‘mouse’, cut out a semi-circle of paper and bend it round to make a cone shape and secure with sellotape.
Discussion
How far can you make him fly?
Does it go further if you have a bigger bottle?
Can you measure how far it flies using building bricks or toy cars or other items?
What is the science? (Adult explanation)
The bottle used as the rocket launcher is not really empty: there is air inside it. Air is elastic (squashy), and when you compress it, it pushes back and the pressure inside increases. In the activity, the sudden increase in air pressure inside the bottle pushes hard on the bottom of the rocket, sending it flying high into the air. There are also two other forces acting on the rocket: air resistance and gravity. Air resistance always pushes in the opposite direction to the rocket’s movement, and its strength depends on the rocket’s shape and its speed. Gravity always pulls downwards, slowing the rocket’s climb but speeding up its descent.

Year 2 Home Learning - 1st March 2021
Date: 28th Feb 2021 @ 2:24pm
Monday 1st March 2021
We hope you have all had a great weekend. We are very excited to have you back in school next week so remember to work really hard this week ready for when you return. Each day this week please try and post at least one piece of work onto SeeSaw – we really enjoy seeing what you have completed at home.
Reading challenge – making a prediction. Before you start a new book can you write down or tell an adult about what you think the story might be about. Use the clues from the front cover, any illustrations, the blurb and the title.
I will put 2 on to start you off.
Now answer these questions:
- How did you sort the numbers?
- How did you know which number came next?
- How does the number 51 show it is the biggest number?
- Tell an adult about the tens and ones in the numbers?
This week our lessons focus on lines of symmetry and symmetry of shapes.
What is Symmetry?
When we think about symmetry the most important thing is that on either side of the line the shape looks the same as the other. They are the same. If the shape does not look the same on each side it does not show symmetry.
For your lesson today please click to watch the video link and complete the attached worksheet.
We have uploaded an additional document named 'CHALLENGE'. This is only intended as extension work to challenge and push your learning. You are not required to complete this sheet.
English
Myself and Miss Bennison walked into the classroom this morning and found a letter next to a glue stick. Take a look at the front of the letter.
Who is this for? How do you know?
Here is what the letter said:

This week we will be focusing on homophones. Please follow this link which introduces you to the word homophones. There are also some interactive games underneath the video - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqhpk2p/articles/zc84cwx
Please see the spellings below, which we would like you to learn this week. Children in school will be given a spelling quiz on Friday 5th March. These spelling can be practiced on Sumdog by selecting the ‘Spelling Quiz’ challenge.
bare/bear |
blue/blew |
here/hear |
there/their/they're |
quiet/quite |
night/knight |
to/too/two |
see/sea |
be/bee |
sun/son |
What are homophones?
Homophones are the words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. This means that chances are high that the you will mix up some of the words at some point in your reading and writing.
Some homophones are pronounced the same way and spelled the same way but have different meanings (homonyms). For example:
rose (the flower) and rose (past tense of the verb to rise)
book (something we read) and book (to schedule something)
Some homophones are pronounced the same way but are spelled differently and have different meanings. For example:
wait (the verb) and weight (how heavy something is)
they're (they are) and their (belonging to them) and there (adverb of place)
What happens if you use homophones wrong? You could end up having sentences that don’t make any sense.
Please see today’s video on Seesaw and have a go at the worksheet attached. See if you can match the each question to the correct homophone.
Science
Can I identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard?
Resources:
A selection of materials for each group, including lengths of wood, metal, plastic and card. You could simply use any materials you can find around the house.
Has anyone ever been on a bridge like these?
Some bridges are only designed for people to cross and so they can be made out of different materials to bridges designed for cars and heavy vehicles. This bridge is a rope bridge.
The ones with the metal ropes are called suspension bridges and they are designed to move a bit. Do you know why? (So they don't break when the wind blows, or when traffic is heavy, etc.)
Some bridges, especially high ones, are built of solid material but are designed to bend and sway a bit. Why do you think this is?
Take a look at a selection of materials you have collected. Can you put them in order of rigidity? (from 'not at all bendy' to 'really bendy')
You are all now really good at doing investigations and thinking like scientists. Your challenge for today is to investigate the materials to see how bendy they are.
Tape down (or hold) your different materials onto a table edge so they lie horizontally secure a weight on the end of each strip. The weights will need to be the same. You will need to measure the bendiness of one strip of material, then remove the weight and attach it to the next strip.
How will you record the bendiness? You may want to attach the strips to the part of a table closest to a wall so you can attach paper to the wall (directly behind the horizontal strips) and draw the bend produced or you could simply observe how much it bends.
What have you discovered by doing your investigation?
Fairtrade Activity
Create a Fairtrade farm in a shoebox! What Fairtrade product is growing on your farm?
You will need:
- shoe box or a recycling box
- other recycling junk/materials
- crayons and pens
Sumdog Challenges
Multiplication – x2, x3, x5 and x10 tables
Maths – Symmetry
Spellings – Homophones
We hope you have a fantastic week of home learning,

Times tables
Tomorrow you are going to be tested on the division facts for the 3x tables.
I would like you to practise dividing by 3 using arrays.
An array is where you arrange things into columns and rows, we use them to help us with our times tables.
Click on the link to watch the video and read about arrays.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znj7hyc/articles/zhgjpg8
I have attached a sheet with questions to practise dividing by 3. The sheet also has some examples of arrays.
Please create arrays for the first 5 questions by:
Drawing shapes in rows of 3.

Geography and Fairtrade Fortnight
I found a really interesting fact to share with you all:
If the Amazon rainforest were a country, it would be the ninth biggest in the world!
I have attached two posters which tell you why the rainforest is so important.
Read the information and then make a poster about the rainforest, focusing on why it is important.
You could include things about:
Animals
Oxygen
Water
Food
Medicine
Homes
Please keep these to bring into school next week 😊
Fairtrade Fortnight
Ask your parents to buy food – things like bananas, chocolate and avocados – that are grown in a sustainable way that’s safe for the rainforest environment, wildlife, and people. That goes for bathroom products too, like shampoo, conditioner and soap. If a product has the Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade logo on it, you know that the farm, forest or company that provided it have created it sustainably!
Reminders
Please keep sending me your work on Seesaw – I am so proud of you for the work I have seen so far. Today I would like you to send me a photo of your writing.
Don’t forget to go on Sumdog. The new challenges start on Monday. It would be super if the whole class could complete them this week.
Have a wonderful day, smile lots J

English
Today, please read or listen to Chapter 8 of Kensuke’s Kingdom. A copy of the book is attached to the blog or you can listen to Chapter 8 by clicking here.
Make sure you look up any words if you are unsure of their meaning. Try and work out the meaning of the word from the sentence before you look it up in a dictionary.
Open the document called ‘Events in Kensuke’s life’ which is attached to the blog. You may either print this sheet out or complete the writing straight into your Home Learning Book. All the instructions for today’s task are explained in this document.
Counting
Count in 10’s from 45 to 185 and back again. Count in 10’s from 62 to 202 and back again. Think about what you found tricky? Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?
Please count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 6.5 to 8.3 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?
Now count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 9.5 to 11.2 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?
How many 0.1’s (tenths) are there between 6.5 and 7.5?
Maths
Click here to play Fruit splat compare equations
You will be given an equation eg 4 x 3 ___ 2 + 2
Work out both sides of the equation. In the example above 4 x 3 = 12 and 2 + 2 = 4.
Decide whether the calculations are = (equal), the first calculation is > (greater than) the second; or the first calculation is < (less than) the second.
Click on the correct symbol. In the example above, you would click on the greater than symbols, because 12 > 4.
Try Level One to begin with and see how you get on! You can choose an untimed or timed game.
Today, we are going to learn how to compare area.
Before you start, write down everything you can remember about area so far. Can you give a definition? What is a closed shape? Last week you learnt 2 different ways to calculate area, what were they?
Write the short date 01.03.21
Write the learning objective Can I compare area?
Watch today’s teaching video here.
Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘Comparing area’.
Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.
Check your answers with the document ‘Comparing area answers’ attached to the blog. Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to understand why you made the error. Can you write a sentence to explain what you have learnt today?
RE
Please open the document called ‘RE Ways to say sorry’ which is attached to the blog. All the information for today’s RE lesson is explained in this document.
Geography
Last week we started our topic about Italy.
Before you start today’s lesson, see if you can name:
- the capital city of Italy and its approximate location
- the 4 countries which border Italy
- the 2 islands that are part of Italy
- the surrounding seas
Check your answers with your map from last week or have a look at map 1 and map 2.
Open the document called ‘Italy’s physical geography’ which is attached to the blog for today’s lesson.
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 11 and 12 times tables)
- A maths challenge all about whole numbers upto 10 000
- A spelling challenge based on the –ation spellings which will be tested today.
Year 6 Home Learning - Monday 1st March 2021
Date: 26th Feb 2021 @ 12:42pm
Monday 1st March 2021
Good morning Year 6 and welcome to the start of the last week of home learning. The pupils in school, the teachers and I are super excited to see you next week so do what you can – you are so close to the end, keep going!
Here are the last Monday’s tasks:
Reading
Read for 30 minutes. Keep building up that speed and stamina.
Reading activity for today:
- Which character in your book are you most like and least like? Explain you answer.
English (split into three parts: Handwriting, Spellings and Writing)
Handwriting
The handwriting poems this week are based on seasons through the year. This week focus on forming each letter correctly, which we have done before but this is something we will do in detail next week when you are all back so practising this is going to help.
December Moon
The moon has come out too soon,
it’s still the middle of the afternoon
and the day shows no signs of darkness.
What is the moon doing,
sneaking into the sky when it’s light?
What is the moon playing at?
Couldn’t it sleep?
Has its alarm clock rung too soon?
Do we see the moon this early
in June or September?
Or does December bring a special moon,
a let’s-get-these-nights-over-soon moon,
a can’t-wait-for-Christmas-to-come moon?
Spellings
The spellings for this week, long ‘y’ sound
- The spelling sheet is attached at the bottom of this blog.
- Sumdog spelling challenge starts today.
Writing task
Can I write as Aladdin in present tense?
Read page 27 – 29. Stop at page 29 then watch the video sent on Seesaw which explains today’s task.
The BBC bitesize link mentioned in the video is here, Past vs Present tense
After completing the task for today, continue reading pages 30 – 36.
Maths – Division Week
Warm up your brain: Counting forward and back in steps of 40 and 60
540, 820, 2650, 7000, 14 650
- Main lesson. The objective for today is:
- Can I use mental strategies to solve division questions?
See the video sent on Seesaw which explains the activities for today’s Maths lesson and the main sheet is named, ‘Mental Division’
- Maths challenge Missing Numbers – explanation on the same video. The sheet is at the bottom of the blog.
PE
Can I solve the noughts and crosses challenge using different tactics?
For today’s task, read the Noughts and Crosses challenge , which explains how to set up a large noughts and crosses using paper, hoops or whatever you have at home. The video on the website doesn’t seem to be working so here is a link to their twitter post with the video on it, Youth Sport Trust - Noughts and Crosses. If that link does not work, here is another link to show you how this game can be played, PE at Home - Noughts and Crosses.
This is a game that should be played with another family member, if possible. Here are a few ideas to make it interesting:
- Race against each other (walking or running depending if you are inside or outside your house)
- Take turns (so it becomes fairer)
- Perform different movements when placing your item down:
- Crawling, sliding, Spider-Man moves, lunging, side-stepping, galloping, jumping, leaping, hopping, move around cones, etc
- Or when you arrive at the noughts and crosses layout, perform one of these moves:
- 5 push-ups, star jumps, burpees, lunges, running on the stop, jumping on the spot, spotty dogs, etc
Do not forget to keep yourself active. My favourite things at the movement are dancing and yoga.
Here is a great Yoga video to help aid you in being more flexible. Yoga for kids with Adriene.
Fairtrade
In today’s lesson, watch the clip, Change the World with Your Choices, which you may remember from Thursday’s task. The video will help to start thinking about the power of your choices
Use the ‘Choices and Consequences’ matching cards to lay them on a table and match up a choice with a consequence.
Then think about the following questions or even discuss them with someone in your house:
Who was affected by these choices?
What countries were impacted by these choices? Can you find them on a map?
Can you identify the choices that were about buying choices?
Can you identify the choices that were made after buying the product?
For an extra task, consider alternative choices and the negative consequences that may arise as a result.
- Look at the choices cards and pick an alternative choice that might have negative consequences e.g. Instead of choosing to recycle your rubbish you might throw it in a regular rubbish bin. Write these on the back of the choices cards.
- What are the negative consequences of these choices? Now write possible negative impact of these alternative choices on the back of the consequences cards.
Sumdog – Three challenges
-
- Division of 2/3 digit numbers (200 target)
- Fluency with division facts (200 target)
- Spellings ‘long /y/ sound’ (45 target)
Congratulations! The last remote Monday is now complete.

Well done for completing another week of home learning Year 2. We have loved reading all of your crayon letters this week and you have produced some brilliant 3D shape work. Today, in Golden Assembly we focused on our Lenten Promises. We have really enjoyed reading all you Lenten Promises this week on ‘how you can be a better person’.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families and find lots of reasons to smile.
Please view our ‘Friday Catch Up’ on Seesaw where we discuss all of your amazing achievements throughout the week.
Reading
It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Can you think of another story with a similar theme?
Can you think of another character similar to the character in this book?
Have a go at drawing both characters.
Maths activity
Choose one of the following activities:
3D Shape Nets
Cut out and assemble the labelled interactive 3D shapes to help you identify and describe the properties of common 3D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces.
3D Shape Colouring
Have a go at identifying which 3D shape matches which colour. Then colour the picture using the relevant colours.
3D Shape Hunt
This activity is great fun and encourages you to practice identifying 3D shapes while using a tally system. You could try and spot the shapes in your house or get outside to find them.
3-D Shape Skeletons
This game could be played outside with sticks and string.
- The aim of this activity is for children to create different 3-D shape skeletons using sticks to represent the edges and the string to represent the vertices.
- When a new shape has been created if it can be named then it should be.
- A variation could be to give children a shape name and for them to make it, for example if asked to make a cube, they would need to get 12 sticks that are the same length.
Have a brilliant weekend.
Year 2 team :)

Reading
It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Reading challenge - Why not draw a picture or make something to capture the essence of a story. Pick 3 words that you are unsure of and look them up in the dictionary.
Resources for questioning your child while they are reading - VIPERS
Maths
To find patterns it is important to think about these things:
- What’s happening to the numbers?
- Can you spot the jumps between the numbers?
- What’s happening to the tens in the number?
- What’s happening to the ones in the number?
- Is it a single digit number?
- Is it a two-digit number?
- Can you notice a change in the ones/units when you are counting?
- Can you talk about odd and even numbers?
Today can you count in 3s from 1 to 30? Repeat this 4 times.
Write your numbers in 3s to 30 from 1. Here are some to start you off.
You can use your hundred square or number line to find the correct numbers.
1 4 7 10 13 16 19 22 25 ………..
Using the questions at the top can you write down 3 patterns that you have found?
Look at the numbers carefully to see what is happening to them.
Please watch the video on White Rose maths and complete the worksheets attached -https://vimeo.com/514238815
We have uploaded an additional document named 'CHALLENGE'. This is only intended as extension work to challenge and push your learning. You are not required to complete this sheet.
English
There is a lot to do in today's English lesson so please feel free to split this across two days. Please see SeeSaw for a video for today’s main lesson and a Word document with further details can be found attached to the blog.
Start off with this comprehension activity.
Remember, it is important to answer the question in a whole sentence e.g. I think the _____ crayon is the angriest because…
1. Which one does Purple Crayon not have to colour?
a) Dragons b) Wizards' hats c) Apples
2. What makes Purple Crayon feel crazy?
3. What word tells us that Purple Crayon does not like messy things?
4. What does Beige Crayon think is not fair?
5. What does Beige Crayon think is a boring thing to colour?
6. How do you think Duncan might feel after reading all those letters?

Spellings – /j/ spelt -ge and -dge
FRENCH
Here’s a song to welcome you back to French learning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atNkI6QFZ50
Now we’re going to recap the names of some fruits with this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ03KjwiIVM
Collect some fruit from the fruit bowl if you have some. You can do some drawings on bits of paper if you don’t have the fruits. Here are the fruit words (pronunciation in brackets): Pick up the right one and say them a few times. Careful with un and une. Un is masculine and une is feminine, remember.
une pomme (oon pom) – an apple; Une banane (oon banan) – a banana; un orange ( un oronj) – an orange; une poire (oon pwar) – a pear; une fraise (oon frez) – a strawberry; un ananas (un anana) – a pineapple; un abricot (un abreeco) – an apricot; un citron (un seetron) – a lemon; une peche (oon pesh) – a peach.
Can you sort them into 2 piles – un and une?
Here’s a game to practise the fruit words.
One of you puts a hat on and the other balances a piece of fruit or a picture on the hat without the hat wearer seeing what it is. The one wearing the hat has to guess what kind of fruit it is – in French of course!
There is a sheet to practise adding colours to fruit below. Notice that the colour goes after the fruit. So we would say a green apple, but in French it is une pomme verte – an apple green! Which is your favourite? Write it at the bottom. Je préfère les fraise (juh prayfair lay frez!)
See if you can ask for your fruit in French this week. Une pomme, s’il te plait. (oon pom seel tuh play).
Merci beaucoup. A bientot! See you soon!
PSHE
See attached document for today’s lesson.
Fairtrade Activity
Today we would like you to use google maps or an atlas to travel around the world!
Can you find any countries where cocoa grows?
Can you write down the name of the countries that you find?
- The temperature of that country today.
- What was the temperature of that country 50 years ago?
- Has it changed?
- Why?
Hope you have a brilliant day of learning year 2.

Year 4
Home Learning Thursday 25th February 2021
Good morning Year 4. I hope you have had good week so far and are back in the swing of Home Learning again. As it’s Fairtrade Fortnight, I have attached a sheet to the blog with some activities you may like to try. You may also like to learn more about Fairtrade by visiting their website here.
Reading
Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes. Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.
Ask someone questions about the chapter you have just read. Start your questions with each of these words: who; what; where; when; why; how; which, and explain.
Remember if you need any new reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.
Spelling
These are your new spellings which will be tested on Monday 29th February 2021. They all have the suffix -ation.
A SUFFIX is a string of letters that go at the END of a root word, changing or adding to its meaning. Suffixes can show if a word is a noun, adjective, adverb or verb. Sometimes root words change when suffixes are added (eg create could become creation, created or creative, imagine could become imagination, imagined or imaginative).
The suffix -ation is added to verbs to form nouns.
education sensation creation celebration punctuation expectation
calculation hesitation imagination invitation location investigation
Write the long date Thursday 25th February 2021
Practise the spellings by splitting them up into chunks in different colours.
Eg education creation hesitation
A spelling challenge has also been set on Sumdog.
English
Today you are going to be writing the next chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom which you planned yesterday. Read over your planning ideas from yesterday. You should be in a good position to start your writing.
Write the long date Thursday 25th February 2021
Write the learning objective Can I write the next chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom?
When you are writing please focus on:
- Handwriting – neat and joined up correctly – please sharpen your pencil before you begin!
- Capital letters for proper nouns (places and people)
- Ambitious vocabulary
- Past tense (it has already happened) and third person (using the pronouns he, she, it, they etc)
- Paragraphs (start a new paragraph for each part of the chapter eg the opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending)
- A variety of sentence openers (see ISPACE and your ideas from yesterday)
- Connecting sentences using words such as and, but, or, yet, so
- Including some correctly punctuated speech BUT NO MORE THAN 6 SENTENCES OF SPEECH
Please time yourself and write for 20 minutes. It does not matter if you do not finish your chapter within this time, however, you should have written nearly one side of A4 in 20 mins.
Read over your work. Then time yourself to write for another 5 minutes.
Read over the last 5 minutes work.
Please give your chapter a title which is appropriate.
Please share your work on Seesaw
Times tables
A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or a mixture of x3 and x6 if you are on ‘free’ tables. Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed-up order. This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.
Write the short date 25.02.21
Write the title Times tables test
Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.
Counting
Count in 10’s from 280 to 450 and back again. Count in 10’s from 1950 to 2100 and back again. Think about what you found tricky? Write the numbers down as you say them – what patterns do you notice?
Please count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 2.8 to 4.5 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?
Now count in 0.1’s (tenths) from 19.5 to 21.0 and back again – can you go any further? Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice now?
What is the relationship between 0.1 and 10?
Maths
Click here to play Daily 10.
Click on play game. Choose Level 3, Ordering, Smallest first, Three-digit numbers. Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.
You will be given 3, three-digit numbers and you will have to write them down in order from smallest to largest. Remember if the hundreds are the same, you will have to look at the tens to see which has the largest value.
Eg 953 958 932 Smallest to largest 932 953 958
All the numbers have 9 hundreds.
Look at the tens. One number only has 3 tens, so this is the smallest.
Now compare the units / ones. 953 number has 3 ones and 958 has 8 ones. Therefore 958 is the largest number as it has 8 ones.
Today, we are going to learn more about area.
Before you start, write down everything you can remember about area so far. Can you give a definition? What is a closed shape? How can you calculate area?
Write the short date 25.02.21
Write the learning objective Can I make shapes with different areas?
Watch today’s teaching video here.
Open the worksheet attached to the blog called ‘Making shapes’.
Complete the worksheet / answer the questions in your Home Learning Book.
Check your answers with the document ‘Making shapes answers’ attached to the blog. Look carefully at any questions you got wrong and try to understand why you made the error. Can you write a sentence to explain what you have learnt today?
Science
Please open the sheet called ‘The Surface of Mars’ attached to the blog. Everything you need for your science lesson is explained in this document.
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths times table challenge (based on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables)
- A maths challenge all about decimals – tenths
- A spelling challenge based on this weeks spellings (-ation)
Please make sure you log on and have a go! It is important that you practise these skills as they are invaluable in helping you to learn your number facts and multiplication and division facts. In addition, they will enable you to calculate accurately and at speed when working mentally.
A new spelling challenge will start tomorrow.
Well done for finishing today’s work. Have a lovely evening and stay safe.

French
Here’s a song to welcome you back to French learning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atNkI6QFZ50
This week we are going to learn how to make nouns plural in French. Plural means when there is more than one. Eg dog = singular; dogs = plural.
Click this link and download lesson 16 with audio.
http://www.rachelhawkes.com/Resources/Y3_French/Yr3SpringFr.php
Work your way through the Powerpoint. You’ll need the phrase Ce sont (suh son) – they are.
Do the exercise on slide 32 in your book. Write the date in French and the title as on the slide – Que sont les pluriels? (What are the plurals.) Divide your page into 3 columns with a ruler:
Singular Plural English
Look up the word in Collins online French dictionary if you don’t know what it means in English. You can add a little picture by each line if you like.
When we say the words in the plural, we don’t pronounce the last s – it is a silent letter. Listen to the lady and repeat the words after her. Did you notice in the earlier slides how to change oiseau (bird) and cheval (horse) into the plural? They don’t add an s. Look back to see how to make these words plural and add them to your list.
Here’s a silly animal song to finish - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRGuyZJaGo
Excellent! Merci beaucoup.
Reminders
Please keep sending me your work on Seesaw – I am so proud of you for the work I have seen so far. Today I would like you to send me a photo of your writing.
Don’t forget to go on Sumdog.
10 of you have already completed the shape challenge – wow!!!
4 of you have already completed the number challenge – AMAZING!
It would be great if everybody could finish the Sumdog challenges today!
Have a wonderful day J I am OVER THE MOON with all of your work so far!
Year 6 Home Learning - Thursday 25th February 2021
Date: 24th Feb 2021 @ 10:46am
Thursday 25th February 2021
Good morning everyone. Remember that today is the last day of learning being posted on the blog (unless you count Reading, which I do not, as it should be done every day).
Tomorrow is Fabulous Friday so you decide whether you want to spread today’s tasks over today and tomorrow or complete it all today.
Here are today’s tasks:
Reading
Read for 30 minutes. Keep building up that speed and stamina.
Reading activity for today:
- Make a list of questions you ask yourself as you read.
English (split into three parts: Handwriting, Spellings and Writing)
Handwriting
The handwriting poems this week are based on animals. This week focus on having every letter on the line.
Butterfly
This morning I found a butterfly
Against my bedroom wall.
I wanted to hold it,
To remember its colours.
But instead I guided its whirring shape
Towards the open window.
I watched it drift into the warm air,
Swaying and looping across the summer garden.
In my book, I found:
‘Tortoiseshell, reddish orange with yellow patches.’
But I remember its leaving,
And the patterns of its moving.
Spellings
The spellings for this week, short ‘y’ sound
-
- Create a mini story using as many of the spellings as possible (you may add prefixes or suffixes to them):
- e.g. The syrup stood proud in the cylinder bottle, a symbol of hope for the dry pancakes that laid helpless on the plate. The floppy flat-cakes had heard of the myth of this mystery substance that defied all physics – some had said that it could turn the pancakes into symmetrical pyramids with just a physical touch. Others had mentioned that it could sing beautiful hymns, rhythmically lulling them to sleep as it smothered them. The mysterious bottle suddenly opened…
- Create a mini story using as many of the spellings as possible (you may add prefixes or suffixes to them):
Writing task
Can I describe the setting based on the film adaptation of Aladdin?
A video has been sent on Seesaw to guide you in describing a setting.
Read pages 22 – 26 which are attached on the blog.
The clip of the film’s cave setting that I refer to in the video is here, Cave of Wonders - part 1 And Cave of Wonders - part 2.
The link to the BBC website mentioned in the Seesaw video is here, Describing a setting with personification.
Success criteria:
- Describe the size of the cave
- Describe any shapes the audience sees
- Use any of the 5 senses (see, hear, taste, smell, touch)
- Use personification (only 1 or 2 needed)
(You can make this writing first or third person)
Maths – Subtraction Week
- Warm up your brain: Counting back in 2 ½ from :
7 , 15 , 23 ½ , 64 , 97
- Main lesson. The objective for today is:
- Can I use subtract fractions from fractions?
There is a White Rose video linked here, Subtract Fractions, which explains how to solve the sheet, White Rose Maths Subtraction.
- Arithmetic 1 – 18. See the Arithmetic video for guidance on some of the questions.
History
Can I write a tweet for what every day was like for a Mayans?
Follow this link to the BBC website on Everyday life for the Mayans.
Make notes from the website and the video, especially on the workers and any differences between the rich and the poor. This knowledge will help in future lessons when we dig deeper into a typical day of a Mayan.
Your task is to write a tweet to a friend explaining what life was like for the Mayans. If you have never written a tweet before, let me explain some success criteria:
- You only have 140 characters (this includes any spaces but for this time I will allow 140 letters)
- You can use abbreviations or single letters to say longer words, just like in a message to a friend such as: r for are, u for you, 8 for eight/ate, ur for you are / your, 4 for for, y for why etc (I am sure you have many more)
- Stick to the facts and try to explain life for a Mayan in no more than 140 characters or letters.
Fairtrade Fortnight
For the next two weeks, we are celebrating and learning about Fairtrade and the growing challenges that climate change brings to farmers and workers in the communities Fairtrade works with.
Within some of the lessons we look at this week and next, we will discover how our choices as individuals can make a difference to the lives of people around the world and the planet we share.
There are two tasks to complete (task 2 can be completed over the next week or so)
Task 1. There is a Fairtrade Fortnight PowerPoint attached at the bottom of the blog. I have sent a video through Seesaw where I talk through the PowerPoint and explain Task 2 at the end. The link to the video I discuss is here, Changing the World through Your Choices
Task 2. Here is a link to Fairtrade’s Share Your Vision which gives you an opportunity to create artwork, poem, prose (speech) or film for a chance to be exhibited in the online Youth Exhibition at the ‘Choose the world you want’ festival between 22nd February and 7th March 2021 but you have to submit by 1st March 2021. More information can be found through the link and the poster Share Your Vision attached at the bottom of the blog.
(In school, we are going to use the information we found in task 1 to help us come up with ideas for poetry and/or artwork for task 2)
You obviously do not have to submit anything for an exhibition but if you want to create some artwork or poetry linked to Fairtrade, bring it into school from the 8TH March to share with the class.
Sumdog – Three challenges:
- Mental subtractions (200 target by Sunday)
- Divisions for 6, 7 and 9s (200 target by Sunday)
- Spellings ‘short /y/ sound’ (45 target by Friday)
Well done, tomorrow is Friday, arguably the best day of the week!
Reception 25th February Home Learning
Date: 24th Feb 2021 @ 10:38am
Thursday 25th February 2021
There are some super reading videos on Seesaw Reception. It is lovely to hear how far you have come during lockdown.
Literacy
Reading – Choose one of your reading books and talk about the story.
See if you can discuss what happened in the story?
Who are the characters? Discuss their feelings? Could you add any speech to your characters?
Was there a problem to solve? How was it solved?
