Year 2 Home Practice Friday 1st July 2022
Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 7:39pm
A great week of learning Year 2, well done to everyone for their lovely manners, fantastic listening and hard work. There were so many people on gold and there are lots of house points on the chart! In English, we have done plenty of writing, some super diaries and a dragon story. The children used excellent vocabulary and punctuation, there handwriting is so neat now! We have moved to addition and subtraction again in Maths. Year 2 are getting very good at using lines and dots (tens and ones) to add/subtract two 2-digit numbers with an exchange. The children did an investigation on hand size in Science. They came to good conclusions and really enjoyed comparing hand sizes. In RE, we started our new topic – Treasures. The children talked about their own special treasures and made/decorated a treasure box. Everyone has now completed their wild weaving, they were beautiful. In French, the children listened to a song to see if they could understand the animal words, looking at the -on sound in the words. Then they learned some words to do with the beach and practised them in a game. It was lovely to see the children having fun and dancing at the disco.
Reading
In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and talk about the book. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.
You could write down these new words in a word book and find out what they mean. It is amazing to see the list grow, something to be very proud of, especially when children realise how many more words they understand and can use!
Please sign and leave a small comment when you have read with your child and make it clear that you have finished a book, then we know we can change it.
Reading books are changed every Monday and sent home on Tuesday. However, if you need to change a book another time, we will change it as needed.
Reading resources:
Oxford Owl – This resource has an exciting range of carefully levelled books to help children learn to read and really enjoy it.
If parents and children decide to use this resource, we ask they access phase 5 books. Go to https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and select ‘my class login’. Scroll down to the ‘eBook Library for Letters & Sounds’. You could also explore the rest of the site and read books from the Oxford Owl eBook library or listen to audio books.

Spelling
Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (08.07.22). A sheet will go home every Friday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet and learn them by calling them out loud.
You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Friday.
This week’s spellings:
word worst
work war
worm warm
world towards
worth ward
Maths
At home, work on your number facts to 20 (16 + 4 = 20, 11 + 9 = 20). These can also be number facts for numbers within 20. For example, 7 + 9 = 16, 8 + 8 = 16 or 5 + 11 = 16. Try writing then in a systematic order. We have done this in class.
You will have a 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x and 4x tables and addition/subtraction to 100 challenges to complete by next Friday on Sumdog.

Happy Friday everyone!
We have had a lovely week in Year 3. Lots of us enjoyed a dance and a boogie at the summer disco.
We have enjoyed our new maths learning this week. We learned how to use partitioning to help us to bridge 10 more easily and lots of us have been practising our skills on Sumdog. Well done Year 3!
We have started our new topics in PSHE, DT and science.
In PSHE we have been thinking about why it is important to keep active and sleep well. We talked about how exercise can make us feel happy and confident.
In science we are going to be learning all about plants. So far we have told each other what we already know and then we went outside to look closely at the plants in our school grounds. We sketched and labelled what we could see. We are looking forward to carrying out some investigations to find out more about plants.
Our DT topic is all about a healthy and varied diet. We looked at some products from supermarkets to find out what ingredients they had in them. We discussed how healthy they were by looking at the different food groups. We are going to use our evaluations to plan and make our own healthy afternoon tea. Have a look at our gallery here.
Home Practice

Counting
Count in:
8s from 0 to 96 and back again.
10s from 63 to 163 and back again.
50s from 0 to 500 and back again.
Sumdog
Go on Sumdog and complete the challenges, these are to practise times tables, spellings and skills that we will be practising in our learning.
Times Tables
Practise the division facts for the 4x tables.
Spellings
Here are the spellings for this week: science scene discipline fascinate cresent scissors ascend scented scenery descend
DT
Start to think about the different ingredients you would find in an afternoon tea. Look at sandwiches, wraps, fruit, and snacks in shops and cafes. Think about which you like the look of and which you think are healthy.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog
This week in year 5
In Maths, we have been completing a number of assessments. The children have been working on their arithmetic and reasoning skills. They have also been given some bike related maths activities to complete whilst taking part in bikeability.
In English we have continued Varjak Paw, he has now found our 6 of the skills needed to help him get a dog to save his family. We have met a particularly nasty character called Sally Bones, we wrote a diary entry as her and her encounter with Varjak.
We have had some lovely outdoor learning this week. We had our Bikeability sessions and the children worked really hard. They also had a ‘wild weaving’ session, I’m sure you all got to see the children’s fantastic wreaths and crosses that they brought home on Wednesday. They worked so well together and collected some lovely flowers and leaves to help them create their fabulous pieces. They also planted their sunflower shoots into the ground, so hopefully they should flower in the coming weeks.
In RE the children have looked at their role as a steward and how they can be a steward in our world and help sustainability. We created a sustainability tree with ideas of how we can help keep the earth safe and create a positive future for it. We also attended church on Wednesday for the Mass for St Peter and Paul. The children behaved very well and remembered their knowledge of St Paul whom we studied earlier this year.
In French, we wrote sentences about sports saying who you play with, what equipment is used, where it is played and what to wear to do the sport. Our friends had to guess which sport we had described.
In Music, the children have been practising songs from Joseph and will be bringing home song sheets to practise at home.
In PE the children did lots of cycling skills throughout the first part of the week. During our PE lesson on Thursday we practised our tennis technique. They children threw a ball to their friend who had to use a tennis racket to knock it back to them. Once they had improved their aim when returning the ball, they started to play with two rackets. We then played a game where the teacher hit a ball to them and they had to return it, within the playing area. If they missed the ball or the ball went ‘out’ they had to join the teacher and became ball catchers. If they caught their friends out they were allowed to re-join the game. They had a really great time and developed their skills.
Home Practice all relates to this week's learning - These are the tasks to be completed.
Reading - You all have a Home Reading book for year 5 so reading every night for 15-20 mins is essential. You also have a Reading Journal/Diary that must be completed and signed. Some children had a break from reading over the holidays but please ensure this is made a priority now that we are back at school. Practise is vital to improve in all areas of English.
You can change your reading book on any school day (book bags to be left on Mrs Mulgrew's desk)
Maths – please ask your child what their times tables target is and help them practise this in order for them to progress.
Spellings words homophones and near homophones. We will look at these in more detail in school next week, they should be practised at home, ready for the test on Friday.

Year 1 Blog-Friday 1st July 2022
Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 9:47am
Welcome to your Friday blog!
English
This week we read some more books in The Lighthouse Keeper series. We started to write our own version of the story about the lunch. We changed some parts of the story. We are going to read our books to the children in Year 2 when we have finished them.
Practice your trigraphs. Click here for songs.
Maths
We have been learning how to bridge through 10 when adding. For example when adding 8+8 we can show this as 8+2+6 as this uses our knowledge of number bonds of 10.
Place Value Basketball. Click here.
PSHE
We have been learning about how we change as we grow. We talked about what babies can do and what we can now do. We talked about what babies need to grow and how our families help us. We also talked about how families are different and the things they have in common.
PE
We continued to develop our throwing and catching skills. We had a go at applying these skills in some small team games.
French
We learned some words to do with the beach. We practised them with a game, song and a story.
Music
This week, we began to learn how to play the glocks. We used a beater for the first time and played a song together. Mrs Winter was so proud of how sensible we all were!
Geography
We looked at the animals which live in hot and cold countries. We matched the animals to their climate and answered questions about their habitat.
RE
We explored how to be kind to each other and how to love one another. We are very good at this! We also looked at saying sorry to others if we do not make a good choice. We related this learning back to last week and the stories of Levi and Zacchaeus.
Outdoor Learning
With our volunteer helper we did some gardening. We weeded the big planters and talked about the types of plants which were growing in them.
Thank you to everyone who visited us on the open morning. The children loved you looking at their classroom and seeing them in action inside and outside!
The children are looking forward to spending time in their new classrooms with their new teachers next week.
Sumdog challenges
Phonics - tricky words 6
Maths - trickier addition and subtraction questions.
Count on and back in 2s, 5s and 10s. Start on different numbers. Talk about whether the numbers are getting bigger or smaller.
Practise quickly recalling number facts, for example 6 is 0+6,1+5,2+4,3+3,4+2,5+1,0+6. practise for other numbers
See if your child can tell the time on an analogue clock. Look at o'clock and half past.
Date: 24th Jun 2022 @ 3:50pm
This week we habe been thinking about 'Journeys' in literacy.
We have been reading the story 'The Journey by Neil Griffiths' and ' The Train Ride by June Crebbin' - We thought about the two different journeys and discussed the similarities and differences.
In Maths this week we have been making amounts using pennies.

Year 4
Home Practice 24th June 2022
Welcome to this week’s blog. Here’s what we have been learning this week ….
In English, we finished our class novel - The Amazing Story of Adophus Tips. We were quite surprised by the ending when Lily / Grandma met up with Adie / Adophus T Madison and they got married, but we loved the happy ending too. Following this, we planned and wrote a book review to recommend the book to other children.
In Maths, we completed our learning about 3D shapes. We then revisited finding powers of 10 more and less than a given number (eg 6548 + 100 = 5648 ; 4309 – 10 = 4299). We found this quite tricky when we needed to bridge hundreds and tens however we persevered. We also compared and ordered numbers beyond 10 000.
In RE, we took part in an act of worship to finish our topic of ‘Building Bridges’. This was beautifully presented and allowed Year 4 to reflect on their learning from this topic.
In PE, we took part in some orienteering activities. This involved following instructions/a map carefully and making a ‘funny face’ out of bean bags, hoops and cones. We also played rounders to practise our throwing, catching and fielding skills.
In French, we listened to a song and tried to understand as much as we could. It was about Gaston le gorille qui joue de la guitar – all the g sounds! We talked about how to spell a hard g and a soft g in English, then found out that it’s the same in French. We also learned the nouns for body parts.
During out PSHE lesson we discussed how we have a shared responsibility to look after our world. We also considered different scenarios and suggested changes which could be made to help stop plastic pollution.
In Computing, we practised making an animation and then evaluated what we did well and what we need to improve. Next week, we are going to make an animation which we hope will be an improved version, based on our evaluation and feedback from today.
Following our First Holy Communion last weekend, we attended a Thanksgiving Mass on Monday afternoon. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Father Michael, the catechists and our families for helping and supporting us over the past few weeks, so that we were fully prepared to take this sacrament.
Online Saftey Update - Live Streaming
Many of our children access YouTube and TikTok as their primary source of online content. Live streamers are becoming ever more popular with children and young people.
Live streaming is the term used to describe the broadcast of a real time video from a mobile device, tablet or games console. Many live streaming apps have functionality for interactions from viewers, such as commenting, live chats and sending reactions during the broadcast.
In this guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as online grooming, privacy & security and online reputation. Also, be aware of age ratings on any platforms you allow your children to use.
This week’s Home Practice …
Reading
Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home. Make sure you discuss the story and the characters. Find the meaning of any new words too. Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.
Times tables
Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables and division facts, especially those that you find tricky. Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?
Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’ and https://www.timestables.co.uk/
It is crucial that you learn all your table facts as this will help you with many aspects of maths.
Counting
This week, please practise counting in 9’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up. When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.
Count in 9’s
For example, start at 0 and count up to 108 and back again
0 9 18 etc 108 99 90 etc
For example, start at 75 and count up to 183 and back again
Remember to +10 then -1 when counting up.
Remember to -10 then +1 when counting down.
75 84 93 etc 183 174 165 etc
Spellings
The spellings this week all have the prefix ‘il’ or ‘im’. A prefix is a group of letters that are added to the beginning of a word and change the meaning or make a new word. ‘Il’ and ‘im’ both mean not. Therefore, when they are added to the beginning of a word, they form words with the opposite meaning. For example illegal means not legal and impatient means not patient. The spellings are on Sumdog this week and will be tested on Thursday 30th June.
illegal illegible illiterate illogical illegally
improper imperfect improbable impatient immature
immobile immortal impractical impossible implausible
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
- A maths challenge based on 7 to 12 division tables
- A maths challenge – find up to 1000 more or less than a given number
Please make sure you log on and have a go! Many of you are still not accessing Sumdog on a daily basis. Little and often is the key to success!
Number bonds
Number bonds are very important and help with many aspects of maths. The more confident you are with these, the easier you will find addition, subtraction, mental calculations etc. Therefore, please continue practising your number bonds / addition skills playing Hit the Button
The game you will play will help with your number bonds and quick addition skills. For example:
8 + 6 you could partition this into 8 + 2 + 4 = 14
This is because 8 + 2 is a pair to 10, then add the 4 to 10
Click on the link above, then on Play Game.
Click on Number bonds
On the left-hand side you will see the words ‘Up to 20’
Click on Addition within 20
See how many you can get correct in 1 minute. Then have another go and try and beat your score.
Maths and spelling training
Please continue to use the maths and spellings training sections as these are tailored for your child to practise skills, facts and words that they find difficult.
Year 3 Blog - Friday 24th June
Date: 24th Jun 2022 @ 12:11pm
HAPPY FRIDAY!
We have had a very hot and very exciting week in Year 3.
In our maths learning we have been using a column method to add, subtract and find missing numbers. It has been really tricky but everybody has persevered and done a fantastic job. The Sumdog challenges this week will help us to practise these skills.
In English we have been writing about trolls and about Quidditch in Harry Potter. We described the trolls (they are not very nice creatures), wrote instructions for how to defeat a troll and made a leaflet all about Quidditch.
We did some orienteering in our PE lesson which was great fun! We all got into pairs and worked together to navigate around a course using a map. We had to follow a route around different cones and add up the numbers written on the cones. We also practised throwing and catching and batting in our rounders games.
On Friday afternoon we painted our clay models of canopic jars. We then put out our clay models alongside replicas of ancient Egyptian artefacts and had our own little museum in class. We acted like historians and used the artefacts to learn what life was like in ancient Egyptian times. Check out the galleries on the class page.

Year 2 Home Practice Friday 24th June 2022
Date: 24th Jun 2022 @ 8:28am
Another busy and fun week in Year 2, well done to everyone for dancing so well in this years ‘Dance from the Heart’. In English, the children wrote their reports carefully using conjunctions, good sentence openers and vocabulary. We also wrote a story about a giant gummy bear, what great imaginations Year 2 have! We are working on place value and number in Maths, placing numbers on a number line, ordering and sequencing numbers to 100 and lots of work on times tables. In RE, we learnt about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and made lovely promise cards. The children designed their own castles in History. They did a daisy investigation in Science, we got some good predictions. In French, the children answered a question about their favourite animal, then finished their Eiffel Tower pictures by adding some facts. These are so good they'll go on the French display!

Year 5 - Friday 24th June 2022
Date: 23rd Jun 2022 @ 5:10pm
Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog
This week in year 5
In Maths, we have finished off number and place value by doing a little more work on multiplying and dividing by powers of 10 and relating this to measure. Some children have secured their facts about measure but some could do to revisit this at home every now and then. They need to remember 1000g = 1kg, 1000ml = 1 litre, 1000m = 1km, 10mm = 1cm and 100cm = 1m for starters. We have moved onto angles at the end of the week, estimating and measuring angles with a protractor.
In English we have continued with the drama in Varjak Paw. The mysterious Vanishings in the book have lead us to writing a newspaper article asking for help to find out what is happening. The children have published these reports in class. We have also been using our inference and comprehension skills by reading chapters and answering questions, using evidence from the text.
In Science, the children continued with their work on living things. They investigated the life cycles of insects and amphibians and learnt common facts about insects and common facts about amphibians.
In RE the children ended their freedom and responsibility topic with a lovely worship, remembering all the things they have learnt.
In French this week, we used all the vocabulary we have learned over the last few weeks to write a paragraph about sports using adverbs of frequency, opinions and negatives. Super writing year 5!
In PE many of you joined us for an outstanding sports day. I’m sure you enjoyed watching the children who put in so much effort, on such a warm day. The children had lots of fun and earned many points for their houses. I’m sure you will agree it was a great afternoon! Please look at the video on St Oswald's YouTube channel.
In Geography, we concluded our topic on China with an investigation in the economic growth of China and how this has impacted upon the country and its people. The children looked into which countries import the most from China and then located these countries on a map.

Year 1 Blog- Friday 24th June 2022
Date: 23rd Jun 2022 @ 9:58am
Welcome to your Friday blog- the last one of June!
English
We started a new series of books about the lighthouse keeper, Mr Grinling, his wife Mrs Grinling and their cat, Hamish. They have all sorts of adventures when looking after the lighthouse. Mr Grinling likes to eat and one day they had a problem with the seagulls eating Mr Grinling's lunch. We invented different ways that Mr Grinling could send the lunch without the seagulls eating it! We had really imaginative ideas! We did some writing about our invention.
Maths
We have been doing lots of challenges this week and trying really hard to apply our knowledge and skills. We have been learning about empty box number sentences and thinking carefully about what we are being asked.
Outdoor Learning
We worked in small groups in our nature area to do some wild weaving. We chose our tree and got busy weaving with wool and natural materials that we found. We were toally engaged with the task and produced some beautiful pieces. Have a look at the photos in the gallery.

P.S.H.E.
We learned about how to take care of other living things. We discussed how to take care of other humans, animals and plants.
Home Practice
Read for at least 10 minutes every night. This is so important. We are encouraging the children to organise their own reading books and to make sure they are in their green school bag every day. Please sign the diary so we can change the books. Keep practicing reading the Tricky Words on sight. Please just write a note in the diary if you need the next set.
Sumdog challenges
Phonics - split digraph e_e
Maths - compare and order numbers
Count on and back in 2s, 5s and 10s. Start on different numbers. Talk about whether the numbers are getting bigger or smaller.
Practise quickly recalling number facts, for example 6 is 0+6,1+5,2+4,3+3,4+2,5+1,0+6. practise for other numbers

Year 4
Home Practice 17th June 2022
Welcome to this week’s blog. Here’s what we have been learning this week ….
In English, we completed an extended piece of writing. We wrote a story as if we were the character Tips from the novel and added to our writing each day. We are extremely proud of the vocabulary we used, together with our handwriting and sentence openers. Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed listening to our stories and were really impressed with our writing too!
In Maths, we continued learning about 3D shapes. We learnt about the properties of pyramids as well as some new vocabulary – apex and congruent. We have really worked hard these past 2 weeks to recap and extend our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes – well done Year 4!
In RE, we wrote our own liturgy of Reconciliation. We chose our own hymns, readings, prayers and responses, and made sure we included an examination of conscience, a penitential rite and an Act of Contrition. We also gave reasons for the actions and symbols used in the liturgy. The children were very proud of their outcomes – well done.
In PE, we took part in our very own Sports Day! Year 4 were proud of their hard work and resilience, as well as having fun competing against their peers. Many thanks for coming and supporting Year 4 – the video is on the school website for you to watch at home.
In French, we read a description of a face and drew it to show we had understood the text.
In Science, we learnt about pitch – the pitch of a sound is how high or low the sound is. We used different musical instruments, glasses containing different amounts of water, and various thickness of rubber bands, to find out what effect any differences had on pitch. We found some interesting results, for example, the thinner the elastic band the higher the pitch.
In Geography, we learnt how a stump is formed at the coast. We watched a video and an animation which demonstrated how a crack (weak point) may, after many years, become a stump. We then ordered a set of pictures to sequence this geographical process.
This week’s Home Practice ….
Counting
This week, please practise counting in 7’s and 70’s– draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up. When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.
Count in 7’s
For example, start at 0 and count up to 112 and back again
0 7 14 etc 112 105 98 etc
For example, start at 70 and count up to 1120 and back again
70 140 210 etc 1120 1050 980 etc
Spellings
This week we are learning how to use an apostrophe correctly when it shows possession, therefore there are no words to learn. We have however learnt the rules for using apostrophes when the noun is plural. We will be practising these each day in class and you will be tested on this rule next Thursday (23rd June 2022).
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 times tables division challenge
- A grammar challenge – Plurals and apostrophes
- A maths challenge – 3D shapes and their properties / parallel and perpendicular lines
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 12:43pm
This week we have been reading 'The Queens Handbag' and looking at the different landmarks that she visits in the story, across the UK.
We have been writing facts about them and labelling the different countries on the map.
We have made some lovely fathers day cards for our Daddys in Art too!
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 12:10pm
Happy sunny Friday :)
We have had such an exciting week in Year 3.
We have been researching the game of Quiddich and using the library at Hogwarts to find our all about the sport. We have all written some fantastic reports on how the game is played and what equipment is needed.
On Monday we were looking at real animal bones in our science lesson. We tried to identify which animal the bones came from and what the bones were used for. We used some of our scientific vocabulary we have learnt in this topic - vertebrate (an animal with a spine) and invertebrate (an animal without a spine).
Click here to see us in action.
On Tuesday afternoon we had the best time taking part in Year 3 Sports Day. Everybody earned house points for their house, cheered each other on and had a brilliant afternoon. Mrs Wood told us that our behaviour was outstanding!
Watch our video to see how much fun we had.
We had a super day on Thursday at Cuerden Valley Park for our school trip. The sun was shining and we all had a fantastic time. We enjoyed going in the river in our wellies to do our river studies. In the afternoon we did some Harry Potter themed activities including orienteering and potion making. We finished off the day with a game of Quidditch which was very exciting.
Take a look at our gallery here.
Home Practice
Read out loud every night for 20 minutes. Try to spot conjunctions and how they are used (as, because, although, even though, so, when, if).
Count out loud in:
30s from 0 to 360
50s from 0 to 600
40s from 0 to 480
Sumdog
Access the Sumdog challenges - try to do 10 minutes every night.
Times Tables
Practise the division facts for the 3x tables.
For example:
1 x 3 = 3 3 ÷ 3 = 3
2 x 3 = 6 6 ÷ 3 = 2

Year 6 Blog - Friday 17th June 2022
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 10:38am
Welcome to our Year 6 blog. This week we have continued with our school production auditions, with all the parts being handed out this week. Get ready for all the hard work over the next few weeks Year 6!
We have also continued practising for the ‘Dance From the Heart Roadshow’ – you will be able to see this live on Tuesday 21st June where it will be performed with the South Ribble sports team at 9.45am. The video to learn from is now on St Oswald’s TV (YouTube channel).
Also, Year 6’s learning this week:
- In Maths, we have investigated different formulas for how to solve the difference between days, weeks, months and years. We then used clocks to discuss how to work difference between times.
- In English, we have written an apology letter to our main character, analysed and created a fight scene, and wrote as an evacuee during World War II.
- In History, for our World War II topic, we have used a museum loan to look in detail at different artefacts (gas masks, evacuee suitcase, first aid box, propaganda posters, etc), a range of photos, some letters from evacuees and video clips to help us gather enough information to understand what life might have been like.
- In Music, we rehearsed all the songs for Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. I have uploaded them onto the website (further information below).
- In French, we practised using the first and third person to write about likes and dislikes from a cafe menu. We also recapped the verbs avoir and etre that the children need to learn off by heart before year 7. Homework - please
- In Science, we consolidated our understanding of Darwin's idea of natural selection which he proposed in his theory of evolution. We also evaluated the investigation we did last week when we modelled the different beak shapes - we decided it could definitely be improved!
Home Practice
This week, there are two activities to complete (some of you will only have one).
- Learn all the words from your script by Tuesday 21st June
- Keep learning as many of the songs as possible – all 14 are uploaded on a separate blog named, ‘Joseph production song lyrics 2022’
(There will be a music practice on Wednesday 22nd June)
- French – please keep singing the song Je suis un enfant de paix on Youtube. This also needs to be learnt off by heart soon.
Year 2 Home Practice Friday 17th June 2022
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 8:34am
A great week in Year 2, well done to everyone for working so hard and having such an enthusiastic and positive attitude towards learning. In English, the children did some fantastic writing using different sentence starters and planned a recount about our trip to the library. We can see a big improvement in the children’s handwriting and presentation. They should be very proud of themselves and keep working hard. They also learnt about speech, prepositions, the prefix -un and the suffixes –er and –est. We have moved on to place value and number in Maths, partitioning numbers using base 10 and part-whole diagrams. In Art, year 2 produced some lovely Father’s Day cards. In RE, we wrote sorry prayers and decorated them with beautiful pictures. Half the class did some fabulous wild weaving during our outdoor learning session. The rest of the class can look forward to doing it next week. The trip to the library was a great success, the children had a wonderful time doing various activities like making book marks, reading stories and going on a hunt around the library. Hopefully, this will inspire them to read more and visit the local library more. There are some good clubs and reading challenges that are layed on over the summer holiday.

In addition to this, reading a good bed time story to your child is so worthwhile and really helps towards a lifelong love of reading.
Spelling
Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (24.06.22). A sheet will go home every Friday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but also to call the words out and spell them out loud using the letter sounds or names. Learn them in a different order, not just how they appear on the list below.
You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Friday.
This week’s spellings:
key trolley
donkey turkey
monkey hockey
chimney parsley
valley journey
Maths
At home, count forwards and backwards in threes. Write them down as you say them and see what patterns you can spot.
You will have a 2x, 5x and 10x tables, and partitioning/greater than and less than challenge on Sumdog to complete by next Friday.

Year 5 - Friday 17th June 2022
Date: 16th Jun 2022 @ 5:49pm
Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog
This week in year 5
In Maths, we have worked on number and place value. We have practised converting between numbers and Roman numerals, we have rounded numbers up to 1000000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000we have been comparing and ordering numbers up to 3 decimal places and we have been practising a range of reasoning questions relating to all these topics.
In English things are really hotting up for Varjak Paw! We have been reading about mysterious Vanishings that have been happening in the city and Varjak has been attacked by a cat gang! The children have been using comprehension skills to answer questions, using the text as evidence and have almost finished a newspaper article about the Vanishings.
In Geography, we have learnt a lot about China, its location, its continent and bordering countries. We also learnt about the desertification of China and how rapidly this is happening and how they are trying to stop it. The children finished with a question scavenger hunt where they ran around the playground finding facts about Chinese culture that would help them answer quiz questions.
In RE we finished our topic on freedom and responsibility by looking at the sacrament of reconciliation. The children produced a lovely piece of work that explained all the different actions and words used during reconciliation and their significance.
In French, we practised using the first and third person to write about likes and dislikes from a cafe menu. We also recapped the verbs avoir and etre that the children need to learn off by heart before year 7. Homework - please keep singing the song Je suis un enfant de paix on Youtube. Again, it needs to be learnt off by heart. In PE we played playground games and worked on teamwork and cooperation.
In PE the children had their bike checks ready for bikability in the coming weeks and they practised their hand eye coordination using a tennis racket and ball. They had partners that threw the ball to them and they had to return the ball to their partner, on target, using a tennis racket. We then finished with a relay race in final preparation for next week’s sports day.
In Computing we have been learning about vector drawing. The children used lines and shapes to create pictures. They worked really hard and created many great pictures.
DON’T FORGET
If you forgot to bring your bike or helmet for the bike check, the catch up day is Tuesday.
Common exception words will be tested next Friday
Sports Day on Thursday - children must have their PE kit in school to participate.
Spellings Common Exception words. They should be practised at home, ready for the test on Friday. Please see sheet provided and highlighted each term.
Sumdog challenges
PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN TO COMPLETE THE SUMDOG CHALLENGES, MANY CHILDREN ARE STILL NOT ACCESSING SUMDOG.
Please encourage your child to complete the Maths and Spelling Training. As you know, we set weekly challenges that are linked to the learning that takes place in school. As an extra feature, the maths and spelling training sections will provide a tailored challenge for your child to practise skills, facts and words they find difficult. Once the diagnostic challenges have been completed Sumdog will set challenges to aid improvement and development in the
appropriate areas for your child. Once you have completed the class challenges, please use this feature for extra challenge in both maths and spelling. Many children have still not completed the diagnostic section.
Times tables have been set to reflect class targets

Year 4 Blog Friday 10th June 2022
Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 4:10pm
Year 4
Home Practice 10th June 2022
Welcome to the first blog of this half term. Here’s what we have been learning this week ….
In English, we wrote our own questions about part of the novel. We tried to remember all our capital letters and question marks, and tried to use a variety of question openers. We also planned and started to write our own story as one of the characters from the novel. We will finish these next week and share them with Year 3.
In Maths, we started learning about shape. We began by learning more about 2D shapes and their properties. Following this, we learnt about the properties of prisms which are a 3D shape.
In RE, we learnt that people get ‘lost’ when they deliberately do something wrong or hurtful to others. This is what is called ‘sin’. However, we also try to build bridges towards one another every day, and we ‘examine our consciences’. We also considered what ‘contrition’ means and how it is an important part of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
In PE, we practised for sports day (which is next Wednesday 15th June). We are looking forward to taking part in our first sports day for a few years!
In French this week, we practised the phonic sound 'ou' then learned the vocabulary for the parts of the face.
In Science, we had fun experimenting with our string telephones. We used them to speak to each other in the playground and then considered the science behind how they worked. In addition, we used a sound box to compare how well different materials muffle sounds.
Online Safety Update
This week, our update is focused on how to set up devices for children. Read our short guide below for some useful tips to safeguard young people against online risk.
This week’s Home Practice ….
It is crucial that you learn all of your table facts as this will help you with many aspects of maths. You will also be taking the Multiplication Tables Check during the next couple of weeks.
Counting
This week, please practise counting in 20’s– draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up. When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.
Count in 20’s
For example, start at 160 and count up to 340 and back again
160 180 200 etc 340 320 300 etc
For example, start at 46 and count up to 286 and back again
46 66 86 etc 286 266 246 etc
Spellings
This week we are learning how to use an apostrophe correctly when it shows possession, therefore there are no words to learn. We have however learnt the rules for using apostrophes when the noun is singular. We will be practising these each day in class and you will be tested on this rule next Thursday (16th June 2022).
Sumdog challenges
You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:
- A maths challenge to identify pairs of parallel and perpendicular lines
- A mixed times table challenge
- A maths challenge to recognise 3D shapes and describe them
Please make sure you log on and have a go!
Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 3:48pm
We have had a lovely a first week back, the children have settled into their final half term of Reception really well.
We have been learning all about 'The Queens Hat' - we have done lots learning all about Landmarks of London, The Queen and spoke about what countries make up the UK.
We have been very creative drawing and painting. Have a look at some of our Art work.
Year 6 Blog - Friday 10th June 2022
Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 2:56pm
Welcome to our first blog of Year 6’s final half term. This week we have begun our school production auditions; the Year 6 were brilliant and really showed us what they were capable of. The class have been given the challenge of preparing for more auditions next week.
We have been practising the dance for the ‘Dance From the Heart Roadshow’ – you will be able to see this live on Tuesday 21st June where it will be performed with the South Ribble sports team at 9.45am. The video is on our Year 6 class page, if you would like to practise it.
Also, Year 6’s learning this week:
- In Maths, we have focused on place value and calculations. With place value, we have practised how to add and subtract whole numbers which decrease into negative numbers. We used this knowledge to solve missing numbers in sequences.
- In English, we have continued our novel, ‘The 1000 Year Old Boy’, through creating dialogue which includes actions from the characters. We also wrote a letter of apology from one character to another.
- In History, we have started our new topic, World War II, and have explored pictures from the past and what they tell us about this era. We then investigated objects from the past to gain a better understanding of what life was like back then.
- In Art, we used our Geography topic of Brazil to inspire our new project, with the artist Romero Britto. He uses amazing colours, pop art and cubism to create stunning artwork.
- In Music, along with our auditions, we have practised the first few songs of our school production: Jacob and Sons, Joseph’s Coat, One More Angel in Heaven and Any Dream Will Do.
- In French this week, we looked at a cafe menu and translated any words we didn't know. We looked at pictures of famous cafes in Paris and talked about cafe culture there.
- In Science this week, we researched Charles Darwin and his work. Having read about the Finches he discovered in the Galapagos Islands and how each bird's beak had adapted to the food available on each island. We modelled 'eating' different types of food using different beaks to see which type of beak was best adapted. This illustrated Darwin's theory of Natural Selection.
Home Practice
This weekend you have been give copies of the first four songs of the Joseph production. Please learn these off by heart by next Wednesday. You may have to use the internet to search the songs to help sing along to.
- Jacob and Sons
- Joseph’s Coat
- One More Angel in Heaven
- Any Dream Will Do

Welcome back to your final term in Year 3!
It has been lovely having everyone back ready for a busy last half term. Next week is our Sports Day and we are very excited to go on our trip to Cuerden Valley.
This week we have been reallly enjoying our novel. We explored Hagrid's home this week and wrote some fantastic recounts of the first flying lesson. Everyone is taking great care with their presentation and using their think pinks to improve their writing. Well done Year 3.
In maths we have been learning how to add and subtract fractions. This has proved tricky but everyone has shown great resilience in their learning. Lots of you have clearly used the Sumdog fractions challenge to refresh what you already know. Keep it up!
In our Egyptology learning we researched Gods and Godesses, exploring how they were depicted in Egyptian art and why they were worshipped. Have a look at some of our brilliant fact files here.
We also continued to design and create our very own canopic jars to house the organs of some mummies. We used what we know about the diffferent gods to help design the jars and used clay to carefully sculpt them. We will paint and glaze these next week.
Home Practice
Continue to read every night for a least 20 minutes. Regular reading will improve comprehension and fluency as well as unlocking a world of learning in all subjects. We have loved seeing all the books on Egypt and the Queen over the past few weeks!
Spelling and Maths challenges have been set on Wednesday. If you have completed these, access the training features to practise tricky skills. Theses are tailored to your child's learning needs. Regular practice of these will help boost spelling and number fluency.
You can also access the whole range of videos and games we have set over the year by clicking on 'View all blogs'.

Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 9:51am
Welcome to your first blog of Summer 2! We have loved hearing all about your half terms.
English
This week, we have read some Katie Morag stories. We learnt a lot of facts about Katie and her family.
In Phonics we have been looking at real words and fake words. We worked really hard with Mrs Corbett to read all of our phonics words.
Maths
This week we have learnt about directions. We have learnt how to do a full turn, half turn, move forwards, backwards, left and right. Please help your children learn their left and right at home.
PE
We have been focusing on our catching skills this week as it can be quite tricky! We worked in small groups to improve our throwing and catching with big balls. We will start challenging ourselves to catch smaller balls next week.
RE
We talked about how we could turn ordinary days into special days. This could be by making good choices, being kind or helping others. We wrote about what we could do this weekend to help someone else.
Geography
We have started our 'Hot and Cold Places' topic in Geography. We used the laptops and atlases to find oceans, land, the poles and different countries. We loved using digimaps on the laptops to explore the world.
PSHE
We talked about how it is really important to never give up and always practise to get better at something. We talked about different jobs adults have and how they got their jobs.We watched a video and helped Carla to make the right choices about her dancing class.
We had an amazing trip to Lytham St Annes! We had lots of fun building sandcastles on the beach and we learnt all about the special lifeboats that go out to rescue people. We saw the end of the pier that is left from a fire which damaged the pier nearly 50 years ago.

Year 5 - Friday 10th June 2022
Date: 9th Jun 2022 @ 5:07pm
Welcome to this week’s Year 5 class blog
This week in year 5
In Maths, we have been working hard on number and place value. We have identified, represented and estimated numbers on a number line, where all the numbers have not been given. We have rounded numbers all the way up to 1000000 to the nearest 10000 and 100000. We have counted forwards and backwards through zero, using positive and negative numbers and also looked at converting numbers into Roman numerals and vice versa. It’s been a busy first week back!
In English we are getting excited about Varjak Paw. He has escaped the Contessa’s house and trying to find his way in the city. The children have spent lots of time exploring the characters and their feelings, reading into the text and seeing how the author shows the characters feelings with their words and descriptions.
In PSHE we have been reflecting on our school year so far. Looking at what we have enjoyed, where we have improved and what we hope for next year. The children enjoyed looking back through their books and their seesaw accounts and remembering all the amazing things they have done.
In RE the children continued looking at freedom and responsibility, examining the scripture from the Old and New Testament linking to this. They have reflected on times when they may not have ‘loved their neighbour’ and written to God asking for forgiveness and help with being able to ‘love their neighbour’, even in difficult times.
In French this week, we practised conjugating the verb jouer - to play. We are really good at these regular ER verbs now - great progress, year 5! Some people even managed to write sentences independently, with correct verb endings and even including negatives. Impressionant!
In PE the children practised techniques for sports day, they worked so hard and they are really starting to understand how to use their bodies to do their very best.

DON’T FORGET
Common exception words have been sent home and the final test for these will happen later this month.
I’d also encourage you to do a daily count with your child. This week we are counting up in 0.04. Give the children a number to start from and they must continue to count from that number in 0.04s, either forwards or backwards. It often helps the children if they note down the numbers as they say them, it helps them work out the next number more easily when they can see it. Help them use bridging where appropriate to count on e.g. 4.08 + 0.02 = 4.1, then add the other 0.02 to get to 4.12.
Spellings words for possibility and Common Exception words. We will look at these in more detail in school next week, they should be practised at home, ready for the test on Friday.
definitely, possibly, probably, frequently, infrequently, occasionally, rarely, certainly, obviously, often, curiosity, restaurant, conscience, disastrous, community.
Don’t forget the children have a big list of Common Exception words to learn, these can be practised each week to push your child further. You should all have received a second sheet with these words on by now, I have highlighted the words that your child wrote correct in a spelling test before Easter. This will give you an indication of how well they are remembering these spellings. We will be assessing the children on these words later in June.
Once the diagnostic challenges have been completed Sumdog will set challenges to aid improvement and development in the appropriate areas for your child. Once you have completed the class challenges, please use this feature for extra challenge in both maths and spelling. Many children have still not completed the diagnostic section.
Times tables have been set to reflect class targets
Maths the children have been set activities relating to number and place value.
