We have had a great week of learning in Year 2. We have been working hard to learn all our songs for the nativity – we have some brilliant singers. We have had a big focus this week on reading at home. Well done to the children who have read more than their 3 weekly books this week. It makes such a huge difference to the children’s learning reading every night. Keep it up! In English the children have been writing non-chronological reports about Cats and Owls. In Maths, we have continued our statistics topic, looking at different tables and graphs and how number is shown using these tables and graphs. The children have also learnt how to complete a tally chart. In DT the children have constructed, painted and designed their Tudor houses – they look fab! In Science we wrote about autumn and also spoke about what you would need to survive on a trip to Mars. You’ll be pleased to know a lot of children said ‘mum and dad’! Yesterday we had a fire satefy lesson from Penwortham Fire and Rescue team. The children listened really well to the talk and did brilliant role play in a fire situation.
Forest School
We made clay faces. First, we collected natural items in the nature area. We found berries, twigs, leaves, stones and moss. We worked the clay into a circle shape and found a tree with rough bark as we discovered the clay stuck better to these trunks. We designed our own clay face. There was great imagination and creativity shown.
In our second session we chose our own learning. We built shelters and hammocks, designed and made booby traps, cooked some delicious muddy food and tied knots. we didn't mind the very cold weather. We showed amazing imagination, teamwork, perseverance, resilience and determination.

Year 2 had a wonderful time at the library. The librarian read three Christmas stories and the children got to vote for their favourite, there was a clear winner! They also made Christmas cards and explored the library, choosing books that they would like to borrow. Everyone had lovely manners and were very respectful. In English, we did a drama workshop in the hall with Mrs Wood. We have a lot of budding actors and actresses and it was lovely to see everyone joining in with confidence and being creative. The nativity play is going to be amazing this year! In Maths, we have started our new topic - graphs, charts and tables. The children have been reading, understanding and answering questions about pictograms and block charts. It has been RSHE week, we learnt about communities, how to keep safe and meeting God in our community. In History, the children completed The Great Fire of London by making a timeline (chronological order) of everything they have learnt. In Art, we learnt about printing and produced some lovely prints. The count down to Christmas is definitely starting, learning Christmas songs, practising for the Nativity play and getting ready for all the Christmas fun.
Forest School
This week we cooked bread on a stick. We remembered our rules about how to keep safe around the fire. Mrs Corbett had already made the dough out of flour, sugar and water. We had to find a suitable stick that was long enough and strong enough to hold the dough. We rolled our ball of dough into a long sausage shape and wrapped it securly around our stick. We cooked the bread in the embers of the fire. We noticed it changed colour as it was cooking. We had to be patient. When it was cooked we put jam, chocolate spread or butter on it. It was delicious!
All of us had a go at the cooking and some of us had an extra session. We chose our own learning in the nature area.

Year 2 have had a great week, the highlight was probably today's pyjama day, everyone looked fabulous. Thank you so much for sending your charity money in. On Tuesday, the children got very active with Freddie Fit. They were so good at joining in with all the activities and the music was great to sing along to, the energy in the room was amazing!
In English, we have done a lot of writing. The children have retold stories, written character descriptions and instructions. Everyone is making a big effort to always make their writing look neat on the page, with finger spaces, lead-ins and letters on the line. More children are remembering to use capital letters and full stops and some children are even using sentence openers with commas and interesting joining words. Year 2 are getting very good at reading aloud in class or groups too. Please keep reading lots at home, it makes such a big difference.
Reading
In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an adult. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.
You could write down these new words in a word book and find out what they mean using a dictionary (practise alphabetical order). It is amazing to see the list grow, something to be very proud of, especially when children realise how many more words they can use and understand!

In RE, we have started our new topic, Preparations. The children talked and wrote about the different ways they prepared for Christmas at home, you do some lovely things during the Chrstmas season! We then thought about how Christians prepare for the coming of Jesus during Advent by lighting Advent Candles, opening Advent Calendars and some people make Christingles or go to Church more.
In PSHE, it was anti-bullying week. The children discussed bullying and what it means and learnt to make a noise if bullying happens!
In this week’s French lesson, we learned how to say some colours in French. Rouge = red, bleu = blue, jaune = yellow, orange = orange, vert = green, rose = pink, violet = purple, marron = brown, blanc = white, gris = grey, and noir = black. We repeated these words to help remember them and matched the correct word to the colours on the board. We then pointed to different things in the classroom when we heard the French colour being said and then played a few rounds of Splat, where we had to point to the right colour on the board. We also listened to the Mr French ‘Les Couleurs’ song to help us.
During Music, we started to learn the next two songs for our Nativity and played the rhythms on the tambourines and tambours. We practised the three songs introduced last lesson. We used the words rhythm and tempo to describe the music.
In Art, the children drew some very small objects in their sketch books. They looked very closely at the size, shape and details, which was quite tricky, but they produced some excellent sketches and really enjoyed the process. In D.T, we were exploring structures of houses and used straws and blu-tac to build our own 3-D structure.
We would really appreciate a few more boxes if you have any spare!

In our first session Storm Debbie was about so we stayed in the lodge. We practiced fastening sticks together by a technique called lashing. Some of us made the initial letter of our name. We also made forest eyes and other objects. We discovered that we had to keep the wool tight to securely fasten the sticks together. Super perseverance was shown.
We went into the nature area for our other session. We played a few games of "Hide the Hedgehog", then we chose our own learning. There was very busy learning including tree wrapping, tree climbing, cooking, restaurants, den building and games.
Next week (23.11.23) we will be visiting the library.
The children may bring a favourite book in from home to read during quiet reading time next week.
Have a great weekend.

Year 2 have had a fantastic week of learning, it has flown by! The children really enjoyed visiting the poppy shop on Wednesday and buying poppies, slap bands and key rings. An author Rachel Walmsley visited on Thursday and read her book 'Listening Ears'. It was a great story and the children got involved by acting out and reading some of the parts. It is possible to buy one of her books if your child would like to, check the newsletter for more information on this.
In English, we are continuing our work on The Diary of a Killer Cat and The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. The children are becoming more fluent readers and their comprehension of the text is really improving. This is reflected in their writing, which includes capital letters and full stops, neat handwriting and interesting joining words.
Reading
In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an adult. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

In addition to this, reading a good bed time story to your child is so worthwhile and really helps towards a lifelong love of reading.
Spelling
Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Wednesday. A sheet will go home every Wednesday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but also to call the words out and spell them out loud using the letter sounds or names. Other ideas include breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (beautiful). You could look for words within words (father) or think of your own ways to remember the word for example, spell it aloud using a tune or song.
You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Wednesday.
This week’s spellings are (08.11.23 – 15.11.23):
fast grass
last plant
past after
class father
pass beautiful
In Maths, the children have finished our work on 2-D and 3-D shape. We have started our multiplication topic and the children have been learning about repeated addition and doubling to help introduce multiplication. They have worked very hard and have a good understanding of repeated addition.
Maths
At home, count forwards and backwards in 2s to 24. Start at different numbers each time. For example, start counting forwards from 12 or backwards from 16. Look at how this relates to the 2x table.
Practise 2-, 5-, 10- and 3-times tables on a game called Hit the Button. Follow this link: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
You will have a 2-D and 3-D shape challenge on Sumdog to complete by next Friday.

In RE, it has been Judaism week. Year 2 have learned about Shabbat, we watched a video clip of a family preparing for Shabbat and listed all the things they needed to do. The children wrote all about what they had learned and drew a detailed picture of all the things included in a Shabbat meal. We designed our own Havdalah candles and some of us made Havdalah spice boxes.
In History, we learned all about Remembrance Day. The children made poppies using pipe cleaners and tissue paper. We thoroughly enjoyed making them and they looked so effective.
This week in French, we recapped how to respond to ‘Comment ҫa va?’. We listened to and joined in with the Lingobox Learning ‘French ҫa va song’. We learned how to say ‘ҫa va très bien’, ‘ҫa va bien’, ‘comme ci, comme ҫa’ and ‘ҫa va mal’. We showed how each character was feeling with our thumbs and saying the correct response. We also decided which phrase we would use for different scenarios.
In Music, we started to learn the songs for our Nativity and played the rhythms on the tambourines and tambours. We tapped the steady beat to The Innkeeper’s song, noticing the tempo getting faster. We sang Here in Pudding Lane again.
Forest School
In our first session we made popcorn. We made sure that we could remember Firey Fox's fire safety rules.
We watched as the adult made the fire and lit it using a flint and steel. We cooked the popcorn in a special pan and described the changes we could see. It was delicious!
In our second session we listened to a story called "Robin's Winter Song". It was about the changing seasons. We discussed how we can look after the birds in Winter. In our nature area we made bird feeders on skewers by threading fruit and cheerios. This activity developed our fine motor skills and our concentration. We hung them in the trees as high up as we could.
We also had time for our own play.
Thank you for sending small cardboard boxes in for our D.T project. We still need quite a few more, so if you have any spare at home please send them in to school with your child. Many thanks.
Have a great weekend.

A great week back in Year 2, well done to everybody for working so hard and following the Golden Rules. There were lots of people on gold and triple gold (Mrs Wood was so pleased). It was also lovely to hear about your holiday and see how ready and excited you are about our new learning this term. Have a happy and safe weekend celebrating Bonfire Night, we will look forward to hearing all about it on Monday.
In English, we have started new novels, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson and The diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine. The children read aloud so well and did great comprehension work, retrieving information and answering some tricky questions. They also worked on adjectives to describe the main characters and wrote a description of Plop, the owl. Great phonics and spelling work, we can see a big improvement. Keep up the super work and effort!
Forest School
This week we did some whittling with vegetable peelers. We used balsa wook as it is very soft. We made sure we used the peelers safely and we made some interesting shapes. We had to persevere as it took a few tries to get the hang of it. In the future, we will use these new skills to make objects out of sticks.
In our other session we played a hiding game in the nature area then made some yarn dolls. We needed to use our knot tying skills and we came up with some very imaginative creations. We helped each other and showed perseverance and concentration.
Reading
In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and talk about the book. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words. You could look up any new words in a dictionary and practise alphabetical order with your child (a great skill to learn).
Please date, sign and leave a small comment when you have read with your child and make it clear that you have finished a book, then we know we can change it.
Reading books are changed every MONDAY. You will receive 2-4 books depending on their length, they should last the week, if you read a little each night. However, if you need to change a book at any other time, we will change it as needed.
Spellings
Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Wednesday (08.11.23). There is also a Sumdog challenge to complete which will help with learning these words. A sheet will go home every Wednesday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.

In Maths, we have moved on to learning about 2-D shape. The children have been naming and describing the properties of shapes and classifying them in venn diagrams. They have been introduced to quadrilaterals, four sided shapes, including squares and rectangles. Remember we call corners vertices now!
Counting
At home, count in 10s up to 100 forwards and backwards. Challenge yourself and count past 100, see how far you can go!
Sumdog
You will have a 2-D shape and spelling challenge to complete by next week.

In RE, the children have finished their Signs and Symbols topic about Baptism and will be moving on to learn about Judaism next week. To mark All Saints Day, some of the children did a Saints scavenger hunt, they answered quiz questions in groups and thought about who their favourite Saint is.
In PSHE, the children discussed bullying and produced a super poster. In Geography, they worked on the saesons of the UK and talked about appropriate clothing depending on what season it was. This week in French, it was Halloween! We discussed whether some facts about Halloween in France were vrai o faux, we learned some vocabulary for typical Halloween things and were able to match the French words to the correct English meaning and then played ‘What’s missing?’. We also had a chance to choose a Halloween character and complete a ‘colour by number’ in French.
In Art, the children created firework paintings with different textures and materials. In PE, we saw some amazing dancing to a firewok song. The children moved like real fireworks with so much energy and enthusiasm. In History, the children heard the Gunpowder Plot story and sequenced pictures to retell that story. In Music, we started a unit of work based on The Great Fire of London. Learnt the first song, Here in Pudding Lane. Then we played the rhythm on our instruments. We listened to Waltz of the flowers and Russian Dance by Tchaikovsky.
Reminders
Our PE day is FRIDAY.
Our BOOK CHANGE day is MONDAY.
SPELLING QUIZ is on WEDNESDAY.
We will be starting our DT project very soon - Tudor Houses. Please could you send in two small cardboard boxes for next Friday. Examples: tissue boxes, shoeboxes or small cereal boxes. We will have some spares in school but the more we can get the better. Thank you.
Have a great weekend,

Year 2 have had a brilliant week of learning.
Thank you to everyone who came to parents evening, it was great to meet you all.
In Maths, the children have added three 1 digit numbers, spotting number bonds and adding on. In English the children have continued to read ‘The bear and the piano’. We have also had a focus on poem writing and performing this week. The children performed a brilliant poem called ‘The fantastic Five’. In Geography we have learnt more about the 4 seasons in the UK and looked at the seasons through our windows. In PSHE we have looked at the different types of bullying, including: verbal, cyber, social and physical. In History we have looked at objects from the Great Fire of London. In Computing we have focused on online safety. In RE the children have been thinking about the signs and symbols of baptism. The children have drawn a beautiful baptism candle.
French - This week in our French lesson we recapped the numbers 1-10 again. The children counted out loud and joined in with the Number Song in French, which got faster each time. We then counted our Pirate friends’ treasure and matched some counting cards with their coins or parrots to the correct digit. The children could all do this in French with each other! As an extra challenge, the children had to choose the correct digit for the French word. This wasn’t in order and they had a choice of four different options. Year 2 did very well! They have worked really hard this half term, recapping and learning French Greetings and numbers 1-10. Next half term, they will be ready to have some new sessions about days of the week, months of the year, weather, clothes and classroom instructions and labels (after we’ve learned about French Halloween!).
Music - We sang In my hands In my feet In my heart, with actions, and learnt to clap the rhythms. We also played the rhythms from the song on tambours and tambourines. We enjoyed our final performance of You are my sunshine on the boom whackers.
Forest School
This week we used a new piece of equipment, our Kelly Kettle. We talked about being safe around the fire. We went into the nature area to collect sticks and twigs to fuel our fire. We made sure the twigs were dry and not too big. The water didn't take long to get warm and we all enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate.
In our other session we had a go at building shelters. We used ropes, traps, tent pegs, mats and clasps. We showed amazing teamwork and resilience as well as great communication.

Year 2 have had a great week of learning.
Little reminder this week:
- Please sign up for parents evening, the sheets are at the office to secure your time slot.
In Maths, we have started subtraction and addition. We have used part whole models for adding a single digit to a two digit number. The children have also learnt to use a bar model to show addition and subtraction. In English the children have read ‘The bear and the piano’. We have written descriptions about the forest and re-told the story using great ideas. In English we have also looked at creating our own poem for national poem day. In Art this week we have used resist wax crayons and special water-colours to create autumn leaves. In Geography we have learnt more about the 4 seasons in the UK and looked at how trees will change in each season. In PSHE we have started our new topic on ‘Bullying’. We have learnt what bullying means and the difference between not being kind and bullying.
Forest School
In our first session we practised tying a simple overhand knot. We used strawberry laces. We tied them to a paper straw and then ate the lace!
In the nature area we found interesting natural objects and tied these to a stick using the knot we had practised. Our own Autumn mobile was created!
Great perseverance was shown.
For our second session we made our own choices. On one day we went into the nature area and explored, made dens, found mini beasts and played games. On the other day we went around the log circle for our child- initiated learning.

Year 2 have had a brilliant week of learning. Thank you so much to everyone who has brought something in for the harvest collection – our box is overflowing!
Few reminders this week
– Please send wellies in for forest school, it is getting very wet and muddy.
- Please sign up for parents evening, the sheets are at the office to secure your time slot.
In Maths, we have started our topic of measuring. We have looked at length and mass using rulers and balance scales. We have continued our novel ‘Paddington’ by Michael Bond. The children have retold the story of Paddington and wrote a set of instructions for making a marmalade sandwich. The children have also been writing in past and present tense. In RE this week the children have written lovely psalms about God’s Love. In Computing we learnt about the different rules for using I.T. In Art this week we have used metallic wax crayons and water colours to create autumn leaves.
Forest School
In our first session we made roll up pizzas. We talked about how to be safe around the fire. In the nature area we made our own pizzas using a wrap, tomato sauce, ham, garlic, onions, basil and cheese. We rolled our pizza up and wrapped it in foil. The first groups pizzas got a bit well done as they were cooked on the grill. We cooked all the other pizzas in the Dutch oven so that we could move the pizzas away from the direct flames.
The pizzas were delicious! We also had plenty of time for child-initiated learning in the nature area.
In our second session some of us were outside making dens, climbing trees, cooking with mud and finding all kinds of creatures. Our sessions on Thursday were in the lodge where great imagination and creativity were shown.

Well done Year 2 – what a great week we have had. Thank you for all your harvest food collections, our box is almost full. The harvest festival is in church Friday 6th October at 2.30pm. Just a small reminder to please label all clothes including coats – thank you.
Maths
In Maths, we have continued our learning of Place Value. We have looked at one more and one less, ten more and ten less. The children have also rounded to the nearest 10. In English our novel has been ‘Paddington’ by Michael Bond. The children have written bear descriptions, sequenced the story and focussed on using conjunctions in sentences and stories. In RE this week the children have written a lovely prayer thanking God for the new day. In Computing we looked at I.T in the world around us. It’s used for traffic lights, speed cameras and many other things. In P.E this week the children are playing games which involve throwing, catching and moving. In Art this week we have collected leaves from outside and carefully drawn them with handwriting pens including all the small details we could see. In Geography, the children have learnt the months of the year and seasons. We looked at which months were in each of the 4 seasons.
Forest School
In our first session we went into the nature area to find animals which have been woven out of willow. These animals were kindly bought by the parents of the Year 6 leavers. We looked carefully to see how the willow had been woven to make different patterns and shapes.
We then had a go at making our own. The first thing to master was how to twist the willow to make a circle as they can be joined together to make the body and head of different animals. We talked about how the younger, green willow is easier to work with as it contains more water than the brown willow.
Some of us made crowns, necklaces, fish and glasses. We really persevered.
For our second session we investigated spinning jennies, also known as helicopter seeds. We talked about how the seeds are dispersed by the wind. We went out to look for them and found plenty on our field. We then made dragonflies with the spinning jennies, pipe cleaners and beads. We made lots of other things as well-bracelets, worry dolls, forest eyes and butterflies.

We have had a brilliant week of learning in Year 2 this week. Thank you to everyone who came to ‘Meet the Teachers’ on Tuesday evening, it was great to see so many of you. Our harvest box has arrived in class, thank you if you have already brought something in for the harvest festival. You still have a few weeks – Harvest festival is Friday 6th October.
In Maths, we have continued our learning of Place Value. We have looked at partitioning one and two digit numbers. We have also learnt how to exchange using tens and ones. In English the children have written super poems all about autumn. The children came up with great ideas about what autumn is like, used talk partners to share their ideas and focused on beautiful handwriting in their presentation. In RE this week the children have written lovely Psalms and created a beautiful picture to go with them. In History the children have compared London today and London in 1666. They looked at the similarities and differences and wrote what they found. In Computing we discussed what we thought about the use of I.T around our school. The topic for Science this half term is Living things and their Habitats. For Science this week, the children have compared things that are alive, not alive and never been alive.
Forest School
In our first session we read a story about Firey Fox which explained how we need to behave around a fire. We watched the fire being lit then collected apples which had fallen off the trees in the nature area. We cored them and cut them into segments. We dipped them in sugar and cinnamon and then toasted them of the fire. Yummy! We were sheltered from the rain in our new fire pit area.
Some of us had a go at starting a fire using a flint and steel.
The weather was beautiful for our second session. We went on a leaf hunt and found as many different leaves as we could. We used shape cutters to make holes in the leaves. We had many ideas about how to develop our learning by glueing, colouring, sewing and investigating pattern.
