Year 2 Home Learning - 1st February 2021

We hope you had a lovely, relaxing weekend.
This week we are celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health week’. There will be activities daily, throughout the week so please take a look under the PSHE section at the end of the blog.
Why not give yourself a target to achieve by the end of the week? Maybe use lead-ins to every letter, have a go at a Maths challenge or do 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Let us know on Friday if you achieved your target.
Remember, some work will be set on Seesaw this week so please read this post carefully. This can be accessed by logging in and navigating to the family announcements section. We know home learning is very different to school but try your best to stick with it. Try to remain resilient and persevere with all the tasks set. Little and often is always the best policy.

This week we will looking at statistics and data handling. From pictograms to line graphs, children learn a lot about collecting, organising and presenting data in primary school maths. This week we will look at how you can help your child get to grips with basic statistics at home. Data handling at primary school means gathering and recording information and then presenting it in a way that is meaningful to others. It is now referred to as ‘statistics’ under the 2014 curriculum.
In Year 2, children are shown pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and tables.
For example, they might be shown this pictogram which shows the favourite fruits of a group of children:
They might be shown a tally chart like the following, used to record the favourite parts of Christmas:
This block diagram or graph shows what kinds of vehicles were seen on a road by one child in the course of half an hour:

Can I use a tally chart?
Today’s maths lesson can be found on Seesaw. Please watch the video carefully pausing to attempt certain tasks when prompted by the teacher.
Worksheet – Go on a shape hunt around your house and see what different shapes you can find. Make a note of this in a tally chart.
Once you have completed this, have a go at the answering the following questions.
How many different shapes did you try to find?
How many objects did you find altogether?

Optional activities – Help the RSPB keep track of what birds are around during Big Schools' Birdwatch with the attached survey sheet. Go for a walk in your local area or look around your garden. How many birds can you spot? Make a tally chart on the survey sheet.

Cast you minds back to lesson 3 and the effect of rubbing wax on a piece of paper.
Can you make a list of reasons why some materials need to be waterproof?
We now know that wax is waterproof and so it doesn't absorb water. When the paint touches the wax, it rolls off and gets absorbed by the surrounding paper. So the lines of your painting will be waxy with no paint, because the paint can't be absorbed there.
Practise on a scrap of card or paper to explore the resisting and absorbing qualities of the wax crayon and paint. You will need to draw lines with the wax crayon and then paint over and around those lines, watching the paint being absorbed into the paper but not where the crayon lines are.
Then give use a larger sheet of card or paper to do your design. There are many variations of wax resist painting, some more complex than others.

Another variation of this experiment
Have a go at resist printing by spreading a layer of Vaseline onto a sheet of tin foil (as if to make an ink pad), carefully pressing a small object (leaf, for example) into the Vaseline and then printing it onto the paper. The Vaseline on the paper should act like wax when paint is applied. This is more advanced than the printing with paint because it requires care when applying both the Vaseline to the object, and then the paint around the Vaseline.

Adjectives are describing words. Adjectives describe nouns.
You can make your own adjectives, by adding suffixes onto nouns or verbs.
A suffix is a group of letters that we can add onto the end of another word.
The suffix then changes the meaning of the word.
In this worksheet, you are going to add the suffix -ful and the suffix -less.

Readings during Mass are read from a lectern. There are readings from the Old Testament and from parts of the New Testament. These are read by people from a book called the Lectionary.
The Gospel readings for each Sunday are on a 3 Year cycle. (A, B, C). The Book of the Gospels is
honoured in a special way because Jesus is God’s Son bringing the Good News of God’s love to
everyone (Gospel means Good News. The priest or deacon reads a gospel story from the Book of
Gospels.
During the rest of Mass, the priest will read from the Altar Missal. This book contains the prayers the priest uses during Mass. Other books used in church at Mass are hymn books, Mass books and prayer books. These are all used by the congregation to help them to take part. Talk about these books which are used in church.
How is the Book of the Gospels is treated?
How do people at Mass greet the Gospel?
Why do you think people make the sign of the Cross three times on themselves before they listen to the Gospel?
What does the priest say before and after he reads the Gospel?
Activities to choose from:
- Design a simple information leaflet about the books we use at church and describe how and why these books are used.
- Make a bookmark to keep in a prayer book. Decorate it with the names of all the books you have learned about.

Why not help mum and dad with some chores around the house. Make your bed or cook a meal (with supervision). Get creative at some point today and draw a picture that makes you smile.
Start your day with a fun game! Keep a balloon up in the air together, taking turns to hit it back and forwards using hands, feet or heads. Set up an obstacle course in the garden/sitting room/hallway.

Computing
This term we are looking at coding in Computing. On the additional documents you will find your child’s individual login for the programme we use. The website is called Code.org. It should work on your tablets. If you do not have one, school will be happy to loan one out to you whilst you are off. Once your child has their unique login, they will be able to access the programme on code.org by following the instructions on the document.
- Each child will have the same 6 letter section code – FMSQGM, they will then search for their name, choose their secret picture and then press the sign in button.

As we start to write longer and more interesting programs, our code often contains a lot of repetition. In this lesson, students will learn about how loops can be used to more easily communicate instructions that have a lot of repetition by looking at the repeated patterns of movement in a dance.

We hope yesterday went well. Hopefully you are all in good spirits and working hard for your parents/carers. The weather doesn’t look great this week but you still need to make sure you are staying active and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity in per day. We love to do the Daily Mile at school. When the word ends in y, we change the y to an i then add -ful or -less.
Using the Adding -ful or -ness Word Search, add the correct suffix to each word, then find the new adjective within the word search. Please see attached worksheet.

Attached is a sheet with 7 farm animals. Print out the sheet (or do 7 drawings). Hide the pictures round the room. When your child finds one, s/he should give the word in French. Then it’s their turn to hide them!
Here is a song to finish – Old MacDonald had a farm in French. It’s a bit fast so may be better played on 0.75 speed. See if you can pick up the sounds the animals make in French. They’re not all the same! The word used for sheep is une brebis (oon brubee) – a ewe.

This week we will be looking at adjectives with the suffix -full and -less.
Adjectives are describing words. Adjectives describe nouns.
You can make your own adjectives, by adding suffixes onto nouns or verbs.
A suffix is a group of letters that we can add onto the end of another word.
The suffix then changes the meaning of the word.
This week, you are going to add the suffix -ful and the suffix -less.
-ful means full of.
Tom's thumb gave him a lot of pain.
Tom had a painful thumb.
-less means without.
The painter didn't care.
The painter was careless.

Collection of manmade and natural objects.
Paint and a pencil
Study with an adult a collection of objects. Have a go at sorting the objects into two groups. Give them clues (think about what the object was before it became what you see in front of you, etc.) and only tell them the groups should be 'manmade' and 'natural' after they have had plenty of time to think and discuss the grouping options.
Discuss the meaning of 'manmade' and 'natural'. Now try to regroup your objects accordingly.
When you look at objects from the manmade group and compare them to the natural objects, what are the differences? Are there any similarities? Is there anything that surprises you about the objects in these two groups?
Can you write words to describe the objects you see (cold, hard, metal, etc.) and the properties they have (flexible, strong, waterproof, etc.).
Can you draw your objects as a repeating pattern? (manmade, natural, manmade, natural, etc.) If you have paint you could try printing paint using some objects from the manmade group and some from the natural group. As they do so, encourage them to talk about the different effects the objects make with the paint. Ask them if they notice any difference in printing between manmade and natural objects. Allow them to be free with their designs but if you need the paintings to be small, the chn will need to use small objects to print (the end of a twig, a tiny piece of sponge, a screw, etc.)

This term we are looking at coding in Computing. On the additional documents you will find your child’s individual login for the programme we use. The website is called Code.org. It should work on your tablets. If you do not have one, school will be happy to loan one out to you whilst you are off. Once your child has their unique login, they will be able to access the programme on code.org by following the instructions on the document.

This week we will be looking at adverbs using the suffix -ly.
Adverbs
An adverb is simply a word that describes a verb (an action or a doing word).
• He ate his breakfast quickly.
The word 'quickly' is an adverb as it tells us how he ate (the verb) his breakfast.
Where to place adverbs?
Adverbs can come before or after a verb.
• He 'quickly' ate his lunch.
• He ate his lunch 'quickly'.
Let Johnny and Inel get you up and moving, while you learn about adjectives and adverbs. Through a song and routine, children will learn how to write better stories using adjectives and adverbs.

Science
Talk to an adult about 'Waterproof materials'. Explain that, if a material does not absorb water, it is said to be waterproof. How many waterproof materials can you think of? Ask if they know what makes a material waterproof and write their answers and theories down.
Waterproof Investigation
1. Choose a piece of plain paper.
2. Drop water onto it. Keep the droplets on just one side of the paper.
3. Watch the droplets. Do they get absorbed into the paper or do the droplets sit on top?
3. Rub wax (a wax crayon) onto the dry side of the paper.
4. Drop water onto the waxy side.
5. Watch the droplets carefully. What do they do? Is it different to the side with no wax?
Mr Ingram and Miss Bennison love to read books in the park but we worry that they can get wet in the rain. Could you make a cover for our books? Give them time to explore making paper waterproof with wax crayons. The Nikwax weblink gives instructions about how to make a waterproof book cover and this challenge could be a homework activity.

What are the rules for changing verbs to the past tense? For a regular verb, add "ed" to turn it into a past tense verb. If a regular verb already ends in "e", make sure it ends in "ed". If a verb ends in a "y", such as "hurry", you change it to an "i" and then add "ed". This becomes "hurried". If a regular verb ends with one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant before adding "ed". For example, "wrap" would become "wrapped". If a verb ends with a "c", you then need to add a "k" before "ed."

For many verbs, to change to past tense you add -ed to the verb.
Example 1:
Jump = jumped
For many verbs that end in y, there are simple rules for changing these words to past tense:
If the y follows a consonant, then change the y to i and add -ed.

This term we are looking at coding in Computing. On the additional documents you will find your child’s individual login for the programme we use. The website is called Code.org. It should work on your tablets. If you do not have one, school will be happy to loan one out to you whilst you are off. Once your child has their unique login, they will be able to access the programme on code.org by following the instructions on the document.
- Each child will have the same 6 letter section code – FMSQGM, they will then search for their name, choose their secret picture and then press the sign in button.

Once your pupils recognise and understand the suffix 'ed', a whole new dimension will be available to them in reading and writing.
They'll recognise the past tense in their reading, and be able to write about things in the past.

The Bible is God’s special book. It is all about how much God loves and cares for people. The Bible is the most important book that Christians use, because it is God’s Word, so it is always treated with reverence. Like all special books we take care of it, make sure our hands are clean before we use it and keep it in a safe place.
There are two main sections in the Bible. The Old Testament tells us about the time before Jesus. The New Testament tells us about Jesus and the beginning of the Church. Some of the books are called by the name of the person thought to have written them: Mark, Jeremiah, Peter. Some are named after the person the story is about: Job, Ruth, Jonah. One is called after an event: Exodus.
Others tell you about the content of the book: Genesis (Beginnings), Psalms, Proverbs, Letters. The Bible is like a library of different books just like we saw a variety of different books that we have at home and in school.

Good morning Year 2 and welcome back to another week of Home learning. We hope you have all had a brilliant weekend. The weather has been a bit frost and very chilly. Regardless, I’m sure you have all been up to lots of fun activities. What did you get up to?

Focus – Try to use some conjunctions in your writing to extend your sentences - and, but, if, when, because.
Animal Airlines –
Can you write a list of animals you would like to work on your animal airline?
(You might want to use bullet points for your list).
Can you write what job these animals will do?
Examples could be: pilot – who’s flying the plane, making the food, giving out the drinks, playing games with children, playing music to help people sleep etc. Try and use your imagination.
Can you choose 4 of your animals on your airline and write in full sentences using your joining words explaining their jobs in more detail.
It would be great to see some adjectives to describe your animals too.

Phonics and Spelling
Does your child know how to change the tense of a verb? Can they say both "I am playing on the field today" and "I played on the field yesterday"? This means they can understand how to change the present tense into the past tense.
There are certain rules we need to follow when changing verbs into the past tense.
What are the rules for changing verbs to the past tense?
For a regular verb, add "ed" to turn it into a past tense verb.
If a regular verb already ends in "e", make sure it ends in "ed".
If a verb ends in a "y", such as "hurry", you change it to an "i" and then add "ed". This becomes "hurried".
If a regular verb ends with one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant before adding "ed". For example, "wrap" would become "wrapped".
If a verb ends with a "c", you then need to add a "k" before "ed."

Science
This half term we have been looking at materials and their properties. Go for a walk in your local area, focus your attention on the different building materials around you. Take photographs, talk about what you see and (if possible) feel the different bricks. Back at home, ask you child - Do you think bricks are absorbent? Ask them to explain their answers. Then challenge them to think of their own questions about bricks and absorbency, such as: Are all hard things waterproof? Do things have to be soft to be absorbent? Alternatively, ask them to create their own Prediction: "All soft things are absorbent" or "Bricks are waterproof because they are hard and solid".
Suggest the following prediction: "Hard materials cannot absorb water" and see what their reactions are. Ask them to give a 'thumbs up' if they agree and a 'thumbs down' if they don't.
Collect different types of wood, brick, plastics, plaster, clay and metals. Stand each of the hard materials in a shallow bowl of water and observe, over time, to see if the material soaks up the water. Give your child a plain piece of paper to encourage them to record their observations in their own way and to explore what works best for them. Get them to describe what they have observed.
You could take pictures and stick them in your Home Learning journal.

This term we are focuisng on coding in Computing. On the additional documents you will find your child’s individual code for the programme we use. The website is called Code.org. It should work on your tablets. If you do not have one, school will be happy to loan one out to you whilst you are off. Once your child has their unique login they will be able to access the programme on code.org by following the instructions on the document.
- Each child will have the same 6 letter section code – FMSQGM, they will then search for their name, choose their secret picture and then press the sign in button.

Year 2 Home Practice - 18th December 2020

What an exciting week! We have visited the Christmas shop, wore our Christmas jumpers and created some brilliant pieces of Christmas art. We also had a visit from Father Michael, who joined us in prayer and gave us a blessing for the Christmas break. This term, the effort from the children has been incredible and they have worked very hard. We will not set any work on SumDog over the Christmas holidays but keep up with your reading. We are both so proud of the progress the children have made this term and we have enjoyed every second.
We hope you have a relaxing and peaceful Christmas holiday and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Today we took part in the St Oswald’s Santa Dash. We managed to stay moving for 15 laps around the yard. Well done to all of Year 2 for showing resilience and not giving up! This week we have carried on reading The Christmasaurus. We have produced some wonderful descriptive pieces and the children have really enjoyed creating their own Christmas Ranch. In Maths we have focused on multiplication and touched on division towards the end of the week. We have used a number of various strategies to help us solve multiplication questions. In French the children have learnt about La légende de Saint Nicolas. We listened to this interesting story and made a card (in French). We are very excited for all the Christmas celebrations next week. 1 week to go! J

In Year 2 we aim to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an older sibling or adult to help deepen your knowledge.

Year 2 Home Practice - 4th December 2020

Another brilliant week in Year 2. We are starting to feel very Christmassy! After quarantining, a naughty elf has joined our classroom today. I wonder what sort of mischief he will get up to. This week we have been reading The Christmasaurus and Year 2 have produced some wonderful pieces of work. In Maths we have been focusing on multiplication. We have used arrays to help us solve questions and understood that multiplication is the same as repeated addition. In RE we looked at the different symbols on an Advent Wreath and we tried to retell the Annunciation story. We even did some orienteering to find baby Jesus! It has been lovely seeing all of Year 2 creating their own dance routines - we have even performed them to the class! We have had a great time in PE with Mrs Cookson and we have also done our the active Advent, trying to stay active for at least 30 minutes a day.
