This week we read the next book in the trilogy, The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle also by David Litchfield. The children wrote their own versions of The Bear and the Piano story. Everyone is trying so hard to make their writing look beautiful on the page. We are also thinking about ourselves as authors and we discussed how to make our stories interesting and exciting.

Phonics

We have been revising  oa as in goat and ow as in shadow.

SPaG

We learnt more about the different types of sentences and wrote some of our own statements, commands, questions and exclamations.

Maths

We learnt how to interpret block graphs and pictograms. We made our own graphs and also learnt how to record amounts using a tally chart.

We have been singing songs to help us learn our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Science

Forest School 

We used the gardening tools safely. We had great fun with all the leaves. Our games showed great imagination and teamwork.

R.E.

We learnt about some Prophets from the Bible, such as Noah and Isaiah and what they did for God.

The children produced lovely work in their books in response to this.

History/Art

On Remembrance Day, year 2 made their own poppies to help us remember those who fought in the wars.

My Happy Mind

We learnt about what happens to our brains when we are happy and also when we might be feeling sad/worried. The children practised their happy breathing, which helps the brain to function fully, so we are content and ready for learning.

 

This week we all enjoyed our session with Freddy Fit. He really put us through our paces!

The Bear and the Piano

English

We started learning through our new book, The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield.

The bear's beautiful music takes him to amazing and wonderful places in his imagination.

We wrote a description of a place in our imagination using great adjectives.

We also planned our own story which we will be writing next week.

Phonics

We have been revisiting the long i sound, i-e as in shine, igh as in night and i as in lion.

SPaG

The children found out about the four types of sentences - statements, commands, questions and exclamations.

Maths

We learned about arrays. We know that 4x3 is the same as 3x4. 

Forest School

This week we went into our nature area. We built shelters. There was lots of resilience and problem solving happening.

Science

We learnt about our bodies. We learnt what things animals and humans need to stay alive.

PSHE

We discussed what is the same and what is different about us. We learnt what the word UNIQUE means.

History/Art

We learnt more about the story of the Gunpowder Plot and

created beautiful Bonfire Night pictures, using coloured tissue paper and crayons.

RE

We read Isaiah (9:1-2) and thought about light and darkness in relation to Jesus and his different titles. The children responded creatively decorationg their own lightbulbs.

My Happy Mind

We had our first lesson in which we learnt about how our brain works and how we can help it work at it's very best. We all have a journal which we use to record our thoughts and feelings.

Spelling: We had a quiz on the 50 spelling words so far, everyone did really well, but please practise any that your child spelt incorrectly.

English

This week we retold the story of Pumpkin Soup and wrote a setting description of Duck's kitchen.

Phonics

We revised the long 'y' sound as in shy, reply and cry.

Maths

We have been measuring length, height and mass, using rulers and balance scales.

Art

The children drew Autumn trees using pencils and crayons. 

Forest School

This week we remembered how to be safe around the fire and we made some delicious pumpkin soup.

Pumpkin Soup: Celebrate 25 years of this timeless classic: 1 (Pumpkin Soup,  1)

English

This week we read our owl non chronogical reports to children in Reception, Year 3 and Year 4. We listened to the story of pumpkin soup and identified the contractions such as it's, didn't, I'll and don't. We also investigated noun phrases such as 'old white cabin'. We used our senses and imaginations to write noun phrases about duck's kitchen.We will be continuing with this learning next week.

Phonics

We revised ie as in pie and i-e as in wide.

Maths

The children have been learning about the names and properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes. We then moved onto measuring length, capacity and mass. The class used metre sticks and rulers to estimate and measure different objects around the classroom.

RE

Next week, we will continue learning about Baptism. It would be great if you could talk to your child about their own Baptism and maybe send some photographs (not precious ones) into school. We will use them to further discuss what happens at a Baptism and the importance of being part of the Church family.

Art

The children had a go at drawing some Halloween pictures by following an artist's instructions.

The results were spooky and fabulous!

Can you be the Samuel Pepys of your day? - Latest Blogs - St Clement Danes  Church of England Primary School

Year 2 read small extracts from the diary of Samuel Pepys and answered questions about what happened during the fire. They found it interesting that Samuel Pepys buried his precious cheese and wine to stop it from burning in the fire!

PSHE

We had a circle time. The theme was' don't do that'. We talked about strategies we could use and things we could say if someone was doing something we didn't like.

Forest School

This week we went out as a group all afternoon. 

We had a discussion about how to keep safe around the fire. We invented our own concoctions from, crumpets, bread, fruit loaf, hot dogs, cheese, pitta bread and wraps. We then toasted them on the fire-delicious!

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark (Paperback)

English

This week we have become owl experts. We read at a piece of non-fiction writing about owls and wrote down all the facts we could find. We learnt about the features of a non-chronological report, wrote a plan and started to write our own report.

Phonics

We revised ai as in train, eigh as in eight, a as in apricot, ea as in steak, ay as in tray, a-e as in take and ey as in grey. We played bingo and we also wrote sentences using as many of the words as we could.

Maths

The children have been adding/subtracting 2 digit numbers, 26+32 or 49-33 using tens and ones apparatus, lines and dots and by mental partitioning methods. We have also continued our work on number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. This came in useful when we were adding three 1-digit numbers together. For example, 3+5+7=15. The children calculated 3+7=10 first, then added the five to make 15.

RE

This week, we have revisited the sacrament of Baptism. The children thought about the signs and symbols of Baptism (white garment, water, Baptismal Candle, oils) and what happens in Church when a baby is Baptised.

Art

The children were busy in our Art lesson, they painted over their oil pastel leaves using water colours. The effect was amazing, they looked really life like! We have some budding artists in Year 2.

Geography

During our lesson, we looked at the continent of Antarctica in more detail. Year 2 St Oswald's 2024-2025 have been included in a time capsule that is travelling on board the RRS Sir David Attenborough headed for the Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. It leaves on 13th October and we will have weekly updates and information about the journey, weather, crew, animals and findings. The children are so excited about it!

 

 

Science

This week we learnt about things which are living and things which have never been alive.

This week we wrote sentences about Plop. We pretended to be Plop. We are trying so hard to form our letters with lead-ins.

We have been revising eigh as in eight, ey as in grey, a as in apricot and ea as in steak.

SPaG

We have been learning about conjunctions (joining words) and writing sentences including... and, but, because, so. The children are trying to use them as often as possible in their own writing.

Maths

The children have been adding/subtracting a multiple of 10 to/from a 2 digit number, 26+20 or 41-30. We have also worked on number bonds to 10 and 100.

RE

This week, we have read Psalm 139 together. The children learnt that a Psalm is a bit like a song or a prayer. They responded to the Psalm with their own art work in the style of Eva Crawford.

French

In French, we recapped the greetings: bonjour,  salut, au revoir, madame, mademoiselle, monsieur, and learned bonsoir and à bientôt. We practised how to respond to 'Comment tu t-appelles?' with 'Je m'appelle...' and 'Comment ça va?' with: ça va très bien / ça va bien / ça va moyen / ça va mal. We followed a script to have a conversation with our partner.
 
Art

Year 2 have been drawing leaves - Fir, Birch, Hazel, Willow, Sycamore and Oak. First they used pencil, then oil pastels. Next week, we will paint over their oil pastel leaves using water colours to see the effect.

Geography

The children know the seven continents and five oceans so well now. During our lesson, we looked at the continent of Asia in more detail. 

Forest School 

Mrs Wood gave every class a bag of daffodils and we planted ours today.

We had a great time in the log circle area- building dens,making obstacle courses, cooking with apples, climbing, balancing, jumping and finding creatures.

We have been using leaves as our inspiration in our art work and we found some of the leaves outside.

Science

We learnt about food chains and drew our own.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark (Paperback)

English

We have started learning through the story of The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. The owl is called Plop. We wrote sentences to describe him, using adjectives and connectives.

In pairs, we discussed why he might be afraid of the dark and wrote some possible reasons for this. 

Phonics

We have been learning ui as in fruit, u-e as in rude and u-e as in cute.

SPaG

We have been learning about proper nouns, common nouns and adjectives. We have also been learning about how many syllables are in a word.

Maths

The children learned how to add a 1 digit number to a 2 digit number, 26+4. we have also been learning about subtraction.

We have been counting in 10's.

European Day of Languages – Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Edimburgo

French

This week for our French lesson, we learned about European Day of Languages which is celebrated on 26th September. In the lesson, we shared what other languages we have learned or know about. We then identified ways which we can celebrate other languages and cultures, including learning new words, tasting their food, practising languages we know. We also discussed reasons why it is important to learn other languages. To finish the lesson, we learned ways to say hello and goodbye in other European languages. PE

The children have really improved their under arm throwing and catching. They have played various mini games and learnt about the importance of dodging to get away from a defender.

RE

The children have completed their Noah's Ark puppets which they will use to act out the story. We also read the story of God's Rainbow which explains God's promise, love and faithfulness.

Forest School

This week we used the leaf cutters to make leaf confetti. Some of us practised tying knots and stick wrapping. We found a lot of apples and spent time collecting them, which required our problem solving skills, washing them and cooking with them.

Burglar Bill

We have continued our learning through the story of Burglar Bill. He wrote us all a letter. As they were all different, they told us lots of information. We used this information to write a character description of him. We also planned an alternative ending to the story and wrote it. We have been using connecting words and adjectives to make our writing even better.

In handwriting we have been learning how to form our letters with lead-ins.

The children have been learning how to work out one more/less than and ten more/less than a given number. We have also been comparing two numbers and deciding which is the greatest or which is the least.

R.E

We re-read the story of Noah's Ark, focusing on the rainbow being a sign of God's promise (covenant) never to send another flood again. The children made their own rainbows and Noah's Ark puppets.

History

The Great Fire of London – Early Years teaching resource - Scholastic

Year 2 are thoroughly enjoying learning about The Great Fire of London. We compared London today with London back in 1666 and learnt where the fire started and how it spread so quickly.

Geography

Seven Continents Map - Geography Teaching Resources - Twinkl

The children have already learnt most of the continents and oceans of the world and really enjoyed looking at their location on the map.

Forest School

We went on a scavenger hunt to find natural objects. We then displayed them on a log-we showed lots of creativity. We then had time for our own learning-we invented games, found plenty of apples, did some wood carving with stones, tried to make a whistle, spotted patterns in the tree stumps, found creatures, problem-solved and practised balancing.

Burglar Bill

We have been learning through the story of Burglar Bill. We wrote him a letter telling him all about ourselves. We also described his house-we were great at thinking of adjectives. We wrote some questions and asked him for some answers! There was a bag of bread from his bakery in our classroom and we wrote some excellent senteces describing it.

In handwriting we have been learning how to form our letters with lead-ins.

Phonics 

We have been revisiting ee as in tree, ea as in leaf, e-e as in Steve and y as in happy.

Maths

We have been learning how to represent 10s and 1s using equipment. We have used Base 10, straws ,counters and cards.

We have read and retold the story of Noah's Ark.

P.E

The children have revisited the fundamental skills of underam throwing and catching. They played mini-games and displayed fantastic team work.

Forest School

Last week we explored the log circle area. We found many creatures, played our own games and built dens.

This week we explored our nature area and spotted many changes since we were last in there.

We found blackberries and apples growing.

This week in Year 2

English

This week we continued to read our novel 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl. We described the characters and learnt about speech. We also also wrote brilliant speech bubbles for how Mr Fox was feeling.

Maths

This week we started our new topic about time. We learnt about minutes past the hour by counting in fives.

RE

We have written about people who help in our community. We all wrote about these people and we discussedthe importance of food banks, shelters and care homes.

Forest School

We learnt about the summer solstice. During the summer solstice, the earth's axis is tilted at its closest point from the sun. This means that in the northern hemisphere, the sun is at its highest point in the sky. It's also the longest day of the year - and the shortest night. This day falls on Saturday 22nd June. We made forest eyes using yarns, beads and wool in sunny colours.

Science

 We learnt about the life cycle of a bean plant.

Geograpghy

We identified the similarities and differences between rivers in Zambia compared to rivers in England.

This week in Year 2

English

This week we read our novel 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl. We also planned and wrote our 'Special Place' writing. The children have written some beautiful pieces of writing - well done Year 2. 

Maths

This week we started learning about 3D shapes and their properties.

RE

We read scripture from Luke (10: 25-37) The Parable of the Good Samaritan. We reflected on the scripture and re-told the story . 

Forest School

We started our session with a colour hunt. We had to find something in the nature area which most closely matched the colour of our card. We found logs, leaves, bark and petals. Then we decided on our own learning. We made some delicious food in the mud kitchen, practised tying knots, used spades, shovels and rakes to make a new garden area and climbed trees. We showed superb co-operation, teamwork, imagination and creativity.

We compared seeds and bulbs. We are learning about germination.

This week we  finished our Kings, Queens and Castles topic. Next week we will start out new topic about technology.

This week in Year 2

PE

We  enjoyed a lovely yoga session on Tuesday with Katie from South Ribble.

English

This week we started our new novel 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl. We wrote descriptions about the main characters and used dictionaries to explore new vocabulary  will come across in the books. We also wrote a lovely piece of writing about the anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Maths

This week we started learning about 2D shapes and lines of symmetry.

RE

This week we started our new branch of learning called 'Dialogue and Scripture'. We read scripture from Luke (10: 25-37) The The Parable of the Good Samaritan. We explored the statement ' Love your neighbour as you love yourself' and wrote a reflection about 'who is my neighbour' in my own life. 

Forest School

This week we went for a walk to spot all the growing that has been happening over the past few weeks. We remembered the story about the Boggarts and we looked out for them.
On our walk, we collected different flowers and grasses. We then used elastic bands or wool to make a weaving frame and made a piece of art. We really concentrated and encouraged each other.
We also had time for some child-initiated learning and a game.

Geography

In Geography this week we learnt about human and physical features in Africa. We learnt some of the countries names from Africa and the flags associated with them.

This week in Year 2

English

This week we finished our novel 'Greta and the Giants' by Zoe Tucker. We learned more about non-fiction writing  and wrote about Greta Thunberg. We researched all about her using I-pads, created a fact file about her and her work and discussed the importance of her actions. We also re-told the story of 'Greta and the Giants'.

Maths

This week we have used the skill of exchanging for addition and subtraction.

RE

This week we learnt all about Mary, the Mother of Jesus and her importance to us. May is the month we remember Mary.

Art

We created a beautiful art canvas using acrylic paint during our topic of expressive painting. We all enjoyed painting a meadow and mixing the paint to create new colours. 

 

#30 Days Wild
As a school we are going to take part in a celebration of everything nature has to offer. This is an initiative set up by The Wildlife Trust. In June, we will be providing opportunities for all children to experience and learn about the wildlife on their doorstep, helping to nurture happier, healthier children, and create allies for our precious natural neighbours.

 

Reminders

The children who are attending football club with Mrs Sheen on Monday (starting after half term) are to wear their PE kits. Please bring trainers if they are not already in PE bags.

This week in Year 2

English

This week we started our new novel 'Greta and the Giants' by Zoe Tucker. We have written setting descriptions for the forest using great vocabulary, written a WANTED poster for the Giants and speech bubbles for their feelings. 

Maths

This week we finished our measuring unit and started place value.

RE

This week we discussed all the scripture we have read and explored so far and created a story map.

Forest School

We went on a circular walk around our top field and noticed lots of changes. If you are on a walk and you trip over a root or something falls from a tree near you it might be the woodland Boggards, very mischievous creatures from folklore.We collected natural materials which we used to make a Boggart. We used clay on a stick to make the head of the Boggart.

 

Science

We planted seeds in different environments. We have our own bean diaries where we are writing the changes each day.

This week we have written poetry about the Earth and the Ocean. We discussed climate change and thought about important changes we need to make.

This week we have been learning about measuring. Today, we explored different equipment used for measuring.

RE

We read and explored new scripture this week from Galatians 5 22-23. We created beautiful artwork to represent the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Forest School

We have been celebrating the month of May. We made willow crowns. We discussed which flowers we could pick. We practised our knot-tying skills.

Computing

We created a program for our friends to step carefully around the classroom on a large grid on the floor whilst using directional language.

This week in Year 2

English

We continued our novel called 'Dear Earth' by Isabel Clara Anganuzzi. The children have written brilliant speech bubbles for how the Earth is feeling and the steps we can all do to help, created a poster to pursuade people to clean up the Earth and wrote an acrostic poem for Earth. 

Maths

This week we have learnt how to solve multiplication and division worded problems.

RE

We learnt all about the Scripture from Saul. We re-told the story of Saul using pictures and captions. 

Forest School

 

We made shelters and pretended a storm was coming! Superb team-work and problem solving. We are also becoming more proficient when tying knots.

 

Art

We explored acrylic paintings from famous artists including Van Gogh. The children re-created one of his paintings using two different mediums. 

 

PSHE

In PSHE this week the children have looked at the roles of people who help us in our community. We have also had a big focus on taking time to write in our feelings book each day after dinner. Here the children can write down any feelings they have (good and bad).

This week in Year 2

English

We continued our novel called 'Dear Earth' by Isabel Clara Anganuzzi. We wrote beautiful poems about our wonderful Earth using our book and celebrating Earth Day 2024. We have also written a diary to describe how beautiful Earth is and making suggestions for how we can make it better. We have also written a recount about our trip to Brockholes Nature Reserve. 

Maths

This week we continued learning about multiplication and using arrays.

RE

We listened to more Scripture about Jesus from Acts in the Bible. We also celebrated how we show we are opening our heart to God.

Forest School

We also celebrated Earth Day which was on Monday of this week. We played our bee game again but this time we added in a waggle dance which is how the bees communicate with each other when they are looking for nectar.

We scattered some wildflower seeds because we know that they provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food. We also picked up all the litter we could find in our nature area.

 

Art

We created brilliant art with their own forest paint brushes. We explored the different textures and marks using acrylic paint.

The children explored a map of Israel looking at the key places where Jesus travelled. We have started a new branch called ' to the ends of the Earth'. We looked at the scripture from Luke's Gospel about the resurrection and ascension. 

Forest School

We played a game to help us to learn about bees. Some of us were flowers and some of us were the bees.

We have finished our money topic. The children have worked hard to develop strategies when completing reasoning problems.
 
RE - the children have listened to the Easter story and explored the important days we celebrate in Holy Week. The children created a lovely story wheel to celebrate their understanding of the Easter story. We also had a lovely visit from Father Michael who gave us a blessing.

This week the children finished the book 'The Lumberjack's Beard'. They wrote super apology letters to the animals who lost their homes from the point of view of Jim Hikory.

This week we started to learn about addition and subtraction using exchanging.

In our learning this week, we re-told the story of Palm Sunday. The children drew lovely pictures of Jesus arriving on his donkey.

Science

In Science this week, we carried out an investigation about the properties of materials. The children explored which materials would be best when water was adding to them.

Forest School

Some of us have been learning how to plant seeds. 

Some of us practised our knots and made a forest eye.

There was also some super child-initiated learning involving making a stream, cooking with wild garlic and discovering a snail hide-out!

This week we wrote lovely Mother's Day poems. The children also continued learning with the story 'The Lumberjack's Beard'. The children loved World Book Day - the costumes were amazing. During the day the children watched an author called Sarah Bowie share her illustrations from her novel 'Nina Peanut is Amazing'. 

Maths

This week we have finished our learning about measuring. The children ordered different masses of objects and placed arrows to show volumes in measuring cylinders. 

RE

In our learning this week, we wrote a lovely prayer about Jesus in the desert and thanked him for all that he has done for us. 

Science

In Science this week, we have been learning all about Spring and we also went outside to observe and measure our Crocuses which we planted last term.

Forest School

We continued our learning about using tools safely. We used a hammer and a screwdriver. We learnt the difference between a nail and a screw.
